Is Bronco an elite Defensive Coordinator?

2011

Utah vs BYU: 54 points, 481 yards.

Utah vs Cal: 10 points, 178 yards.

NONE of those 481 offensive yards came off of turnovers, by the way. Every single one of those was Utah's offense versus Bronco's defense.

Fail. BYU's defesnse did not give up 54 points vs Utah.

Utah had two defensive touchdowns. So now we're down to 40 points given up by the defense.

BYU fumbled a kickoff on their own three-yard line. Utah needed two plays to go three yards for a TD. Hard to blame the defense for that one. So now we're down to 33 points.

BYU fumbled on their own 6. Utah needed three plays to go three yards and kicked a FG. That's a win for the defense, but I'll keep it at 33 points.

BYU gave up 3 TDs in the 4th quarter with the score 33-10, where the offense had already committed five turnovers and the defense quit.

Additionally, of those 481 yards, 152 of those came on 7 plays in the 4th quarter when the defense had quit. Before that, Utah had 329 yards on 60 plays - not an elite yard per play, but not awful either.

Oh and against Cal, Utah four turnovers and Cal 0. I wonder if that had anything to do with it. Cal force four 3-and-punts and two of those turnovers could also be considered a 3-and-out. BYU forced Utah into three 3-and-punts and on turnover 3-and-out.

And judging ANY team by one game is a poor idea. Also, to compare one team's best game to their worst game isn't fair either.

Mars,

We get it, you don't like Bronco. Question is why?

I think it's safe to say it was the defense that kept us in most games (Tulsa, texas, ole miss, up until the 4th q of utah game) And last year Bronco had a huge effect on the defensive production after he took over again. But, if you want to ignore that, feel free.

Fair enough Mars, why don't you compare the rest of the teams BYU played this year. I am pretty sure that in all of the rest of BYU's games they held their opponents below their average for yards. And with the exception of TCU points as well. As far as TCU's points, I can't give that to the defense entirely since the punt team was in the habit of screwing up in that game and handing TCU the ball in great scoring position.

So your opinion is formed based on ONE game? Not only is that irrational, it's borderline foolish, even childish. The whole team looked like $@()! in that game, starting with the O, then special teams. The only time I thought the D looked ridiculously bad were on those two long TD runs late in the game, and the two long passing plays for TDs, late first half, early 2nd half. And one of those passes was really more the result of a good OC recognizing something in the D that could be exploited, and taking advantage of it, and the other was a DB miscalculating the flight path of the football.

Bronco is an elite level D Coordinator. That was more apparent than ever in 2010. Just look at the complete transformation of the D in ONE WEEK between the USU and the SDSU games. He completely turned the trajectory of that D around in, what, 5 practices? 4 practices?

I'm not sure what you're smoking, but whatever it is, I'm pretty sure its an honor code violation.

If we are to judge Bronco on one game, we can just you on one post. You are obviously not very smart.

Mars, who would you consider to be an elite level defensive coordinator?

You mean when he took a defense that was giving up 259 yards rushing per gameand 433 yards of total offense per game in their first five games and turned it into a defense that gave up 273 yards of offense, and 53 yards rushing in just one week.

And those same defensive players gave up just 63 yards rushing per game and 267 yards of total offense per game in their final eight games? This defensive coordinator reduced his rushing yards allowed by 76% and total offense allowed by 39%, on the fly, during the season with little-to-no time to install a new defense.

He's very good at what he does.

I think Bronco is a great D coordinator. When you look at what BYU gives up in relation to the average of what opponents typically get offensively, BYU gives up less than the average. Are we a D like LSU or Bama? No way, but we do not have the athletes on Dline to play that way. But our athleticism is improving, and our aggressiveness will with that.

I think the D will be even better next year. The 3-4 Bronco plays mirrors the Steelers style, and they do not play bump cover on the corners either. The do on the boundary side--just as we do, but not on the field side--just as we do. They let the LBs make plays with the safeties. If Bills/Sampson/Sorensen can own that Paulamalu role, we take off.

Exactly. And if you compare the turn-around games - USU vs. SDSU - its even more impressive, given how much better on O SDSU is/was than USU.

The way I see it, the D's job is to get the opposing offense off the field. Here is the difference between Bronco's d last year and Hill's.

Washington 12 possessions, they had 6 punts and 3 of them are 3 and outs. Mind you this was Hill's best game as D coordinator last year.

AF had 13 possessions They had 4 punts and 3 of them were 3 and outs. They had 5 touchdowns. And as bad as that was, it gets worse.

FSU had 13 possessions they had 3 punts and one fumble recovered by BYU. 6 scoring drives. In the second half they scored on 3 out of their 4 drives. The game was winnable until BYU's defense couldn't get FSU off the field in the second half.

Nevada had 10 possessions they had 2 punts in the first half the defense gave up 4 scoring drives, 3 of them are touchdowns. The game was allowed to be put away in the 1st half.

Utah state had 13 drives with 4 punts. In the 1st half they scored on 4 of their 5 possessions, with 3 of them being touchdowns.

SDSU (Bronco as the D coordinator) 11 drives 6 punts 5 of them were 3 and outs. IN the first half SDSU scored on only 1 drive, giving a young BYU offense a chance to win the game.

TCU had 13 drives 5 punts 2 of them were 3 and outs. This was a bad game but BYU's offense didn't help since they put TCU in scoring position late in the half that allowed this game to get out of hand in a matter of seconds.

I am not going to go through the rest of the games. You guys know as well as I do what happened last year with the defense. It went from letting games get out of hand early to allowing our young offense to compete and win games. Bronco is very good. BYU did very well on defense this year as well, it was a top 20 ranked defense and it is going to get better in the future.

Jeez, sometimes you guys are worse than cougarboard. I get it, many of you would rather be discussing Edward vs Jacob, and the rest are debating politics on a sports message board. Good hell. I just want to talk some football.

I LIKE Bronco. Grind that axe you idiots. I think he is a good defensive coordinator and a great man, and an even better DC than HC. I think BYU would have a very, very hard time doing better than him, which should make him set for life in Provo as long as he wants to be here. I didn't ask if Bronco was a terrible, awful good-for-nothing, as the Utah game would imply. I just don't think he is elite. Yes, he is better than Jaime Hill- The excellent DB coach that Bronco chose for whatever reason to promote to the position of DC, then fired. But when your players enter halftime down 4 points and completely quit on you as a coach, how "elite' can you be? He's certainly no Gary Patterson, who seems to do more with less every year.

As Spiff said, 40 points on defense to Utah? "FAIL!"

I'm a BYU football fan BECAUSE he's no Gary Patterson. If Gary Patterson were our coach, I'd stop caring at all about our football cougars, The difference between Gary Patterson's car and a porcupine is that the pricks are on the outside of the procupine....

More with less? Hmmm, maybe you should go back and look at the players that TCU has had drafted into the NFL during the same time period. Patterson is in the middle of football country with no honor code and little grade restrictions. He doesn't get Texas or Oklahoma type recruits but he is getting the best of the rest and believe me BYU can't compete with that. I think Bronco has done more with less then anyone except Peterson at Boise state. Frankly, I am sick of how much love Patterson and the ute up north get from our own fans. Frankly most of you don't really appreciate the mess he had to clean up when Crowton left and how much he has gotten off of the little he had left when we had 16 kids kicked out of school or transfer because Bronco told them how hard they would have to work to make it in his system in 2004. Is he perfect? No, but BYU couldn't do better.

Like the DE that played a different position in high school and no one wanted? Or maybe Tayo Fabuluje someday. No, Gary seems to recruit 2-star kids and turn them into NFL players, while Bronco seems to recruit 3-star players and turn them into transfers. You don't sign NFL players out of high school, you sign HS kids and build them up into NFL players. At least, that's what happens at TCU.

Oh, and just because BYU would have a hard time doing better than Bronco doesn't mean that he is our absolute ceiling, never to be passed. That would be a sad day, if improvement was deemed not-achievable, and BYU could never hope for a 0 or 1 loss season ever again.

I'm just glad that we have a nice guy at head coach, and not someone who compares his boosters to those who crucified Christ, and calls the fans idiots, someone who says that he deals with high fan expectations by no longer caring or trying to meet them... :skeptic:
