BYU vs SD Thread

Abouo is playing well against Johnny Dee but needs to force issue with his drives to basket and not settle for jumpshot. We also need to keep 6-11 SD center Cramer from getting ball down on block (2-3') from basket - he has 11 points at half (avg is 6.3).



They need to rebound ball agressively, work inside-outside game consistently, don't let Johnny Dee and Cramer go off in 2nd half.

Each game against the lower rung conference teams seem to be the same script. We start out slow, edge onward, end up with multiple double scores, etc. etc.



Hard to get excited playing this season in the WCC.

I find this season very exciting. The lower tier teams aren't great, but it's a nice change from the MWC. The top teams are very good and arent thugs like some former conference mates. Our team is really young, how can it not be exciting seeing them develop this season.

Was at the game tonight. Here are a few observations.

-The arena was about 60% filled with about 60% BYU fans.

- One could tell they were flat in warmups. They had no energy.

- USD band was chanting "honor code" at one point to Davies.

- Arena is beautiful

- one BYU fan in front of me with a long lens on his camera was zooming in taking pictures of USD cheerleaders.

- poor Demarcus Harrison. Something is going on.

This season in the WCC seems to be- 4 good games, 12 crappy games, and then the post-season tournament. I think most years will have a better #4 team.

Someone noted at another site how disappointed they were in the BYU fans. When we knew we were coming to the WCC, there was talk that BYU fans could out-number the locals. While I don't know if that hasn't happened, for some venues like what I was seeing on the TV last night from my home in Utah, I could have brought the young men from my ward and about equaled the home crowd of USD. At that same site someone offered up that USD had raised the price for the BYU game to $33-$35/ticket. It would be very hard not to sit at home and watch the game on your HD TV and keep your money in that case. I have a little bit better understanding of the smaller crowds on the road.



I'll admit it myself that I'm finding it harder to get myself up and out to a game in Provo when I can so comfortably watch it from my home. I'm getting very spoiled.

Was good to get such an easy win when Noah was shooting poorly on the night. This is such a balanced team scoring wise.

Ugly start. USD's guards (seems to be the theme in WCC) were disruptive and BYU had a hard time getting anything going on offense. I was glad USD couldn't score.



Dave Rose did NOT look happy going into half-time, I think he expected a little more fire out of his team. I agree with EM-Puma, this BYU team has a lot of guys that can score. Quite the luxury. Even that "space wasting" Cusick knocked some big shots down. His 3% has got to be going up steadily.



Nate Austin is still a stud.

I think Austin will be a very good role player over his career. I don't think he can be a consistent post scorer or focal point. But given some of the talent we have coming in on the wings and back court he'll provide good energy throughout his career.

Once again, Cusick came in, played well, help BYU get control of the game, hit some big shots and helped BYU win.



He's now 9-10 from behind the three-point line in conference play. He's a big part of where BYU is right now. His play is allowing Carlino to start, come to the bench, get some coaching and then re-enter the game and play better.

This was the first game where a WCC team took our two big post men away. Which is especially surprising, since BD went 20-20 on them last time.



I hope no one else can copy the blueprint.

Was thinking the same thing and fortunately, our guards stepped up.



Davies needs to do a bit better job of passing back out on the double. He's gotten better, but he continues to try and force a shot when doubled up. Needs to pass it back out.

When teams double/triple team our two bigs (Harstock, Davies), they need to continue to pass it out to the wings and our shooters need to step up (Abouo, Zylstra, Carlino, Cusick). This is what happened last night - thank goodness. As mentioned in the SL Trib article - this team has no identity - which is a positive - a team can't just focus on one or two players. Hope this continues vs St. Mary's, Gonzaga, et. al.

The SLTrib is wrong. That IS the team's identity, not lack thereof.

Why Damarcus Harrison has not been playing: has by far BYU's lowest offensive rating/PAP yet BYU's highest % of possessions used/shots taken.

Of the 11 BYU players averaging 9 min/gm or more, eight have offensive ratings of 100.0 or better. Winder 98.7, Sharp 97.3, Harrison 76.9.

Damarcus began the season quite well; hit four of his first seven 3pfga. Since then, he has hit four of his next 28 3pfga.

remeber, though, Jimmer's first shot at BYU was NBA (Nothing But Air!)


He's an eager beaver and shoots just about every time he touches the ball. Plus he's very TO prone. Against SD was the first game in about 3 or 4 where he didn't shoot, course he only played for 1 min. In fact, in that 1 min of play he had 1 rebound and 1 TO.



He played well against Baylor, but since then has plummeted.

If he would focus on D he might get more playing time. We have plenty of scorers.
