Surprise Recruiting Benefits from Independence/EXPN Exposure

Bronco has stated that he was surprised by the number of potential recruits who themselves or their families have contacted BYU about the football program and their interest in becoming part of the team. They are from non-LDS backgrounds but are socially very conservative and Christian. He stated that the exposure on ESPN and the commentators statements about the HC and the way the team plays has opened up a side to the recruiting that they hadn't experienced before. These recruits are looking for an alternative to the weekend fraternizing at bars, etc. that are common on the other campuses - they are looking for a wholesome environment where they can practice their beliefs and not be singled out. Sounds like our recruting pool is getting deeper. Let's see how it translates into good players.

Maybe Bronco is the true social conservative alternative the nation has been searching for. ;-)

BYU is probably getting more tapes sent in from kids across the nation now, and not just LDS kids. Might also be more on the radar for JC kids. We did just get a nice NT DL signing which was unusual for BYU. But in the big picture for now, might mean 2 players per class. If we went Big XII, could have meant 4 players per class. But our depth is improving, as is our skill. We will see it in 2013 and beyond. If we get good QB play, we could surprise.

I can't wait for the day we land a Danny Wuerfell or Tim Tebow from this ESPN/independence exposure.

The funny thing is, people gave me a lot of grief saying that BYU's recruiting pool would not increase in the Big 12 but if BYU were in the Big12, Tim Tebow types of kids would not be off our radar. In fact he is a perfect example of a good Christian kid that would have been attracted to BYU's high moral standards. Tebow was all about the NC though so Florida was a good choice for him.

The first kid has a friend (Paau?) on the team that committed too so I would not count him. I don't know about Jamaal and how we found him.

Both those kids commit before BYU started getting all the ESPN games. But it could have had an impact. For 2012 class, maybe 1-2 guys as well. I suspect it will be the norm. 1-2 guys per class, with the core still being LDS kids. The HC will require it, because there is atrition as it is. Just look at the players we lost from the great 2010 class already:

Collin Keoshian

Cori Gaines

Tayo Fabaluje

Joey Owens??--possible medical reasons

Jamaal was interested in the Y because his coach is a former BYU DB.



BTW Hiva Lutui, who is now considering BYU because of the UCLA coaching change, is a cousin of our recruit Butch Paau.
