Bronco is on to somehting--defense wins

That game last night showed once again that defense wins the big games. And that in CFB especially, the team with the superior line play on both sides of the ball will win. QB play can elevate a team, but if you get beat in the trenches, does not matter one bit. Bama stifled LSU and did enough on offense against a really talented LSU D to get it done.



IF BYU wants to take the next step, we need to do the following:



1)Improve Oline play. gotta be able to run it successfully enough against great defenses to keep them honest. We could not do that this year against good D's.

2)Be more disruptive with the front 4. Did you see how Bama dominated the game up front, and ran a 4-3 and 3-4 during the game. They got after it. The suffocated LSU into mistakes. It was an impressive display of dominance.

3) QB good enough to make plays and keep the D honest. Do not have to throw for 300, just make the throw when called upon.



Great team win by Bama. They looked really well coached last night.

Saban definitely outcoached Miles. I found myself wondering if we were looking at the first coach to ever get run out of town the same year his team played for a NC. The Tigers looked confused the entire game on offense, and their QB looked...well...below average (still can't believe they didn't put Lee into the game in the 4th quarter).



Interesting feeling for me this morning - after watching the game, I think that Bama is the best team in the country. But I still don't think they deserved to play in the NC game.

Heh, I was talking to a friend the other day and those were pretty much the same points we made. Well, not #2 exactly - I don't mind what BYU's defensive philosophy is as long as it's effective. I'd love to see more sacks and TFLs, but as long as we're getting the other team's offense off the field (which we generally do) then I'm happy.



My guess is that O-line play will make or break 2012. Riley will be good enough if he has either a run game to take some of the pressure off or time to avoid making stupid decisions. It's up to the O-line to provide both of those.

Sorry, but we can't get those kinds of linemen athletes. We are good at getting large boys to plug holes and sort of keep people at bay. But if you're asking for an aggressive, punishing line that will mow teams down it just isn't going to happen. I wish that were not true but every offseason we end up talking about how disappointing the lines were (even though the D line was better than usual this year).

Our Dline was good this year for sure. Very good. Not elite. But our Oline was really far from good. Avergae when compared to the NCAA schools. And our line play should be top 25 caliber every year, with top10 years every so often. Line play has not been great since 2006 or 2007. But was awful this year, especially the interior line play. Center and Left Guard, in particular.

Just convince the Hogs that they are playing church bball and you'll start to see their nasty streak.

But BYU can at least get the kind of linemen Wisconsin gets, and they seemed to be pretty punishing and aggressive. A lot of it's the coaching--BYU's offensive line coaches tend to favor size over agility, and that philosophy manifests itself in the way many of BYU's linemen develop in their college careers.

Very true. Just look at the AF bowl. That game came down to BYU D making a few more plays than the Tulsa D.
