CougarbibYou know. The ones that left you feeling great. The ones you would watch a re-run of later. The one with signature moments you will never forget. The one with the Miraculous ending. The one with National implications. The most fun to watch. The one where a BYU QB or other player had that breakout game. Or whatever rising tide floated your boat. Feel free to explain why. Rank them. It can be one before you were born if you got goose bumps hearing about it from your dad, mom, or grandparent. A win. A moral victory. Or for those of you that walk to the proverbial beat - a loss that made us better off for having lost it.
Fire away. IDK what I will pick. Tulsa is a contender for me.
1. 1984 - Holiday Bowl - Michigan - NC - Bosco limping all over the field after a cheap hit knocked him out for a few series. Blaine Fowler - ready when needed - plus his son is one of my son's friends.
2. 1980 - Holiday Bowl - SMU - Miracle Bowl - The making of a legend - Jim McMahon. Many BYU fans left the stadium or turned off the tv or radio - and were shocked to hear BYU won. Kind of like when my sister-in-law turned off the Utah game on 4th and long with 1:32 left Saturday. Actually - way bigger miracle than that. Lavell tried to waive the white flag and McMahon refused to concede. And Clay Brown went up and got it in a crowd of defenders. I watched this game on a 4 hour delayed broadcast in Chicago and got so excited I called my best friend in Utah when it ended, forgetting that it was about 3:00AM. When his wife answered Hhhhhhheeeeeeeeeellllllllloooooooooowwwwww - I realized what time it was. This would be #1 - except no NC at stake.
3. 1983 - Holiday Bowl - Missouri. BYU struggled. Reminded me of Tulsa. But in the end - halfback pass back to Young as the clock was winding down. Nearly picked off. Definitely a game of inches. I was at my step-mom's formal holiday dinner party at Dad's house. We kept sneaking
a spy out to get the score and give us updates. Step Mom getting madder each time. No TiVo back then.
4. 1996 - Cotton Bowl. Our only New Year's Day Bowl ever. The life of a mid-major. We struggled. But Sark delivered late. 14-1. First time ever in NCAA history. Sark was memorialized that day. JC transfer - first time that worked out for BYU. My best friend - Ute fan - polite one - but Ute fan nonetheless - was visiting me in So. Cal - watching it on the Big Screen TV in my game room upstairs - he was pacing back and forth all night - big room - pretty sure he was not nervous about a BYU loss - that was back when Ute fans still had Coug Envy. Those were the days.
Those were easy right off the top of my head. Did not even need to think about it. We did not win a Bowl game before the Miracle Bowl. I ain't into moral victories or losses that somehow...
Scratch Bosco playing injured secretly his senior year and giving Ohio State a little scare. So
scratch Penn State and Detmer's moral victory. Miami was not a bowl game - darn it. A&M killed our Heisman winner that year. Ty Tied a very good Iowa team his senior year andcthen rushed over to kiss his sister. Ties are like moral victories. If only they had OT back then. Ty had two or three Ties that senior year. Is TY out of contention? Well there was his coming out party at the Freedom Bowl as a RS Freshman when he struggled before beating Eric Bienemy - the great
CU running back or bowling ball or whatever he was. 10-7 iirc. That is a contender. It seems like Jimmy Mac beat WSU or someone in a wild one as a senior. But since I can't remember without looking it up.... Fast forward - Beck beat somebody. So did Max Hall. But signature moments are escaping me. I was at the Oregon blowout in the LVB - cold and windy. Satisfying to shut up the Quacks. A contender. But signature moments are hard to remember in blowouts. Oregon State - Las Vegas. I was there - I think. No I wasn't. Very, very windy. The wind was the signature moment. Very satisfying. Who were those two brothers. A contender. UCLA. I was
right behind the uprights on that blocked field goal. That was a miracle - even more than the blocked UW extra point to open the next season. Former BYU DC as Acting UCLA Head Coach for the Bruins who seem to make a pattern of losing Bowl Games for acting head coaches. Who did they fire that year? Much closer than it should have been. But we snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. EDITED: cheated and looked at a list. After Barry Switzer at Okie dissed us in 1984, the BYU surprise beat down of Okie sometime after BS was run out of Norman, was a sweet one in the Copper Bowl. And early on, that Jim Mac 2 point win over WSU must be a memory for anyone that saw it. TV coverage or even news coverage was sparse outside of Utah in those days. And if we had to put a loss on it - Marc Wilson came up 1 point short of a perfect season Vs Indiana. Thriller- yes. Satisfying? Frustrating? And a Tie - then Ty Tying Iowa his senior year. Iowa was very good.
5. UCLA and Tulsa tied - then Colorado, Oregon, Okie, Oregon State, WSU, in that order. Then maybe Indiana and Iowa. Maybe. I like winning. WSU would go much higher if I had seen it or read details of it on Cc back then. Hawk: where was CC back in 1979 or so?
