Why Tulsa Victory Hurts our Program

Because it appeases everyone that we went 10-3 despite the fact that we had the talent to be 13-0. Anyone excited about his victory proves that they are fine performing at a high level of mediocrity.

I was supposed to eat crow if Riley led us to a victory over Hawaii and Tulsa. I don't really feel right about doing it but whatever, Riley is the man. Hawaii is garbage, so I'm throwing that one out. Tulsa is mediocre. 17-40, 3 td's and 2 picks. Boy if that's not getting it done, I don't know what is. Does he have immeasurable intangibles? Absolutely. His leadership is awesome. His players will put everything on the line, but I'm sorry, if anyone thinks he's going to get it done against good teams, I think the blue goggles are on too tight. Cody Hoffman saved his bacon time and time again.

All I'm saying is that people need to stop and look at what we could be instead of what we are. I think the team massively underperformed this year and I think there needs to be some changes.

Yeah - exciting football games, dramatic comebacks, and winning ugly sucks other than holding the national audience interest for the entire game and getting some exposure for the team having the character to win when things are tough.

Sorry you did not get your blowout. Sucks to be you.

BTW - they more than covered the spread.

Maybe, you're the one who needs a change of perspective.

Seriously, grow a pair. Live in reality, not fantasy land.

That was a good Tulsa team we beat. They were very evenly matched with us. It was to good teams (not great) that matched up strength for strength. Both teams played very hard and well at times. It came down to ONE play with just seconds remaining and one team made a play and the other didn't.

News flash, that's what Cody Hoffman is supposed to do: make plays.

But don't worry, there will always be room for fans like you on the bandwagon.

I saw the final score and thought to myself "Damn! I wanted us to lose this game because I'm a true fan!!!!"

Ah, the old "you're stupid and inferior fans compared to me because you don't demand perfection" shtick. I'm not buying it, a fan can still be happy to end a season on a high note and happy about a season without thinking that the team has reached their potential.

I never said the game wasn't exciting and full of drama. I said that throughout the season, our team massively underperformed given our level of talent.

You are right about me needing a change of perspective. Like you, I should just accept the fact that we are irrelevant and then I can get excited about beating other irrelevant teams like Tulsa.

Room on the bandwagon? What does that even mean? I love BYU just as much as anyone on this board. Maybe that's why I don't like settling for mediocrity.

I should "grow a pair" because I think BYU should not only be better but we should expect better??? Nice.

"This team should have gone 13-0" + "Riley can't win against good teams" + the fact that, at the very least, TCU is a good team =

Riley was the best quarterback on the roster this year. If you don't believe he can beat the good teams, then BYU neither over-performed nor under-performed this year. If you believe that there was possibly SOME OTHER quarterback that could have been better than Nelson this year, you're obviously more comfortable basing your expectations on nebulous projections of "unrealized talent," "potential" and "upside" than I am.

I get that this would've been a good year to run the table. It's disappointing that BYU didn't field a team good enough to go undefeated, but aside from recruiting rankings and off-season pull quotes, I never saw much that led me to believe that this was a BCS-busting team.

Another thing - for the 10,000th time, why are fan expectations so important to some of you people? What I expect from BYU has ABSOLUTELY NO IMPACT on what BYU does. So somehow, me being somewhat happy with a 10-3 season is going to get back to Bronco Mendenhall, and as a result BYU won't try as hard next year? If one thing has driven me batty this year, it's fans (mostly at CB) who think that as long as BYU underperforms based on their expectations, it is their duty as a fan to piss and moan about the team on any given forum, or withdraw their "fan support" like it's some sort of foreign policy decision.

My issue is way more with Bronco than Riley. And I seriously need to reconsider my expectations at the beginning of the season. I fully expected a run at a BCS bowl with this years' roster which is why I view it as a failure by BM. I guess if I go into a season expecting 8 or so wins, I could probably derive a whole lot more enjoyment. And I'm not trying to be a wise-a.

Hmmm...let's compare other team's record who had mid-season changes with their starting QB. I hear crickets chirping in the background - the silence is deafening.

Before we start complaining about Riley, let's see what he can do with this year's experience, and penciled in as a starter for a full season. We can expect more with him being entrenched as the starter and receiving a majority of the reps. He has the team unified and the chemistry is great. He also won't be working out with his own personal trainer but will stay in tune with the team. He is the leader.

Additionally, we had an almost entire coaching staff change (Doman - OC/QB coach, Dupaix - RB, Cahoon - WR, Reynolds - TE, Poppinga - LBs). Next year we will have mostly seniors and juniors returning to the fold and an extra year with our coaching staff, plus a bunch of talented RMs returning. You can expect the team to build upon its success from this year and reach greater heights.

Maybe because other teams' coaches know what they're doing. That's two years in a row the most important position has been jacked up because of coaching decisions. Was it BM's fault Jake regressed a little? Not entirely (I think He let Jake get away with way too much from day one). Pulling Jake after he goes through the toughest part of the schedule is a little questionable as well. It did make Riley look that much better, though.

Are you serious?. Expect greater things?!?! Doing that does nothing but set me up for disappointment. Every year. No matter what, I'm expecting 8 wins next year. I'll probably have a much different feeling around this time next year. :skeptic:

Every BYU team has the "potential" to go 13-0. Execution of plays on offense and defense on every play will result in wins against every team they play. Unfortunately, the NCAA requires that we field a team with actual humans (you know the kind that make bad plays sometimes). Now as a result of BYU winning this game, Bronco Mendenhall will now set the theme for next year as "Quest For 10-3." I'm so bummed. Why couldn't Riley Nelson (who's not good enough to win against any team that beats us, and is only good enough to win against teams that are bad enough that we actually beat them) just throw one more interception to make everyone realize that 13-0 is the only acceptable outcome during any season that we have talented players on our team. I think we should bench Riley Nelson for winning the game and start someone else who has no college starting experience. If you disagree with my post, you either have the blue goggles on too tight or you just don't understand college football as well as I do, after all, my father's best friend's brother started for BYU in 1970 and I have met him 6 times.

Who licked the red off Cougman's candy? Unless you think we should pound other good teams every time, you are clueless! We have some good players ; so does Tulsa. We are not going to win every game and with th e other team begging for mercy. I saw a great game and saw again a QB have. a pretty bad game still win it! That fourth and 9 scramble was epic! Enjoy competition. and quit moaning the lack of perfection.

Cougman has too much trouble admitting that he was wrong, instead he's created a post about why it would be better if he had been right (and we'd lost our last two games). The sign of an insecure man.

At least we make things interesting and keep fans in their seatsand on edge until the very end. Whew, my heart was beating like a racehorse until the end, when I screamed at the last minute TD, everyone in the Urology clinic thought I had a catheter implanted incorrectly :-)

So going by your theory, every team that BYU has ever had, has the same potential. And in theory, you're correct. They all could go 13-0 or 0-13. But reality is different. Each team has a different level of talent. It was my opinion that this years' roster was going to be one of our more talented teams we've fielded. I don't think I was alone in this.

That's awesome that you've met a player who started for BYU six times. Five would be lame. But Six!!

To me it was just a frustrating win. Riley did what he needed to do and so did the defense. Hoffman did well for the way Nelson was throwing the ball. He resembled Heaps a lot in his over or under throws.

I don't think the win hurts our program though as no one will hesitate long over the frustrations of the game with the turnovers and poor completion percentage. I believe it was an off game from Riley and I have confidence that he will have a above average to great senior year. Next season will have a lot more tests than this one and if we end up 10-3, it will be successful, but not great. We need to make it to a BCS bowl game to take this program any higher, but that will be very difficult with the current BCS bylaws. We need that system to change to allow us to qualify if we are the highest ranked non-BCS team.

You're out of your freakin mind if you think I'm wrong. That's awesomely cool that you can get enjoyment out of beating irrelevant mid level teams. Yes, people Tulsa is not that great. They are a decent 8-4 Conference USA team. Talk to me about Riley's greatness when he beats somebody that matters.

If you want me to eat crow, sure I'll eat crow. I didn't think we'd win the game. I was pretty much right until Riley pulled off a great 2 minute finish. Big deal. The game didn't change my perception that he's not going to be able to get it done against tougher competition.

And BoiseBYU - Have we pounded ANY good teams????

I agree. TCU, BSU, Utah, and Hawaii did it. We should've already done it.
