. . .now let's chant stupid things at you and cuss at you during the game. Classless fans at "Saint" Mary's. Not good form at all and it makes the loss that much more frustrating. Not to mention the refs. Ouch. One loss doesn't put us outta the race. We need to make a free throw and take care of the ball. We clearly didn't want it in the first half and lacked intensity.



Still loving the team, exciting to watch. We're learning and I can handle the roller-coaster ride during this building season. Rise and shout.

SMC fans. You guys spanked us in your high school gym which was ROCKING. Great win. Congratulations, hopefully the cougars learned what a real team is supposed to look like. If you're reading this thread don't freak out when every fan has an excuse for why BYU lost. BYU flat out stunk and SMC played amazing.



Now prepare yourself for a serving of Marriott. Unlike the hotel chain, it won't be a "home away from home".

That's a bit unfair to bag on your fellow posters on CC before anything is even said. Seems like an apologist trying to separate himself from the rest of us. There may be a lot of "excuses" for why BYU lost, most of us call that analysis of the game/team. It's one of the reasons we come on here. I'm not sure why anyone would expect this game not be discussed and dissected. there are reasons BYU lost and I hope we talk about all of them. If you want to deem those "excuses", then I guess we have a different way of looking at thing.

maybe I should have been more clear. Blaming referees is not a reason BYU lost. Especially when BYU couldn't even make a FT. I saw a ton of complaining about refs. For the most part they (refs) were horrible both ways.



Wasn't saying to not discuss the game, but it was getting old just seeing the refs blamed.

Defense: I have never seen so many wide open layups and 3's in my life.



I do think the refs took the heart out of BYU a bit though. The free throw discrepancy in this game was huge, especially when BYU was attacking the basket like they were. You would expect more foul shots when you do that.

Crappy defense lost the game for BYU or what defense? The Cougars gave up 98 points. that's right 98 points in a non-overtime game.



Now that you may be coming back to earth from you're over inflated egos of pre-destined dominance some of you may realize your not in Kansas anymore or in your instance the MWC.



Although the WCC is just a high school league to most of you I think you will find that each and every team in the league takes pride in defending their home turf and any road victory will be well earned.



Having BYU in the WCC is great for the conference and although most of you think it's a step backwards you will find that this is a very competitive conference dominated by guard play and if you don't bring it every time out well.... you might give up 98 points.



Hopefully some here can now appreciate exactly how amazing it is that GU has won or shared the conference title 11 years in a row. I'm sure most here thought that BYU was a shoo-in to end the streak. Some of the more delusional here may think last night was an aberration, it wasn't so get used to it as there are very few gimmes in the WCC.



It's conference time so no wishes of good luck in future games.

It is a good conference,the MWC was a much better conference than the WCC, so it is a step back but not as big a one as some would believe. There are some good teams in the WCC.

I don't know where you get the idea that BYU fans expected to come in and dominate this conference. I haven't met any. Everyone is giving St Mary's and Gonzaga credit for being good teams. Having said that, if you think for a second that the WCC is as good as the MWC was last year you are mistaken. Gonzaga has 11 straight conference championships in the WCC and that is commendable but they would have been lucky to be the 3rd or 4th best team in the MWC last year. You saw what happened to Gonzaga when they ran into a depleted BYU team last year. I think that BYU will be competative this year.....in a rebuilding year in the WCC. We may not win the championship, we still might win it. You never know. It really depends on how our group of Freshman guards matures.

Where, bigblahla, has anyone on this forum compared the WCC to a high school league, claimed it was a step backwards, or anticipated coasting through the league?



I think you're self-projecting here, bigblahla, which is very typical and reminiscent of our previous conference members. I give it three years until BYU once again finds itself dealing with all sorts of bigoted comments and we see anti-mormon signs in student sections or students being "clever" and dressing up as LDS missionaries.

Overinflated egos? Where do you come up with this garbage? Most Cougar fans predicted losses at SMC and at Zaga. And sure, we gave up 90 some-odd, but they gave up 80 some-odd, it was just the tempo of the game. Also, not in the MWC anymore? You do realize that the MWC had SDSU, UNM, and UNLV, who are all very good basketball teams as well. Maybe educate yourself a little before you start talking smack, especially when it's not even your team that beat us.

Sorry bigblahblahblah, SMC won't shoot that high of percentage again all year. They had a great game and shot like 64% from 3-land for most of the game. Credit them. Discredit you. This is a respectful site for visiting fans from other schools who bring reasonable discussion. So, bring some respect next time or don't bother coming back.

Maybe we should make a sticky for posting all of the quotes from visitors that come on to trash talk. This guy's would make the list. That guy from OU a couple years back who was really nice until we beat them, he had a few nice quotes post game worth posting on a wall of shame. It's just fun to go back and read some of the assinine comments some people make.

I think your team is very good but SMC shot well because they were consistently open. Again you gave up 98 points, no defense. Your guard play for the most part was not good.



If I was over the top it's because more BYU fans than not think you are going to run roughshod over the WCC. There might be a handful on this board that don't but the majority from what I have read do think we're a crappy little conference and can't wait to leave for greener pastures.



I looked forward to BYU being in our conference and think if you stay there will be some new rivalries that will make for outstanding games. The truth is there is not a fan base in the WCC that is not already sick of whiny BYU fans who want to leave the conference.

blahla - would encourage you to keep reading the board and get a feel for the tone. Yes, there have been some comments saying that we took a step down going to the WCC (you have to acknowledge that venue size alone makes the WCC smaller scale than the MWC). And most of that chatter has been in the context of "can we keep the best coach most Cougar fans have ever known, or does he go to a league with tier 1 venues?" I think you can understand that concern.



There has also been a TON of chatter about how glad we are to be in a league with schools that share our core values; how we believe the Big XIX and Big East talks were at least impacted by our respect for our relationship with the WCC; how we went from a 2-4 bid league with BYU to a 2-3 bid league with BYU.



Did the WCC get better at the top by adding BYU? Without question. Will it be a battle to win the conference or the tourney? Undeniably. Are we excited to host you in Provo? Oh yeah! See you Feb 11.

The difference now, is that instead of a Big Two (SMC & Zags) there's going to be a Big Three (w/ BYU). The rest of the conference is ATROCIOUS.



Take for instance Ken Pomeroy's rankings. St Mary's is 20th, BYU at 23 and Gonzaga at 26. The next WCC team is USF at 178 followed by Santa Clara at 179. Then Pepperdine at 207, Loyola at 209, Portland at 248, and San Diego at 272.



On ESPN's Insider RPI Daily rankings, Gonzaga is 15, St. Mary's 29 and BYU 49. The rest of the WCC is at 147 (USF), 151 (SC), 197 (Port), 201 (Pepp), 212 (LMU), and 283 (USD).



There's a HUGE gap between the top and even the middle of the conference.

When you get in those crappy little gyms all of a sudden 212 plays like 21 and 201 plays like 12 and you wonder how did these teams lose in the OOC, that's the WCC.



If Foster and Roquemore of SCU are both on against the Cougars you better have the offensive game of the season as you could see another 90+ put on you. I don't think you have the guard play to keep up with them.



LMU is always scary regardless of the record. Drew Viney can pretty much do whatever he wants on the court. Odds are you'll see the best of all WCC teams on their home court.



Yes, the Zebras are consistently bad, seems like the softest conference in the country.



Teams have to adjust to the calls because WCC officials do control games sometimes to a point of destroying the flow and continuity of the game.



All Zags are looking forward to payback in Provo.
