Tulsa vs the Averages of their Opponents

Here's how Tulsa fared offensively and defensively against their opponents' averages. I think I shared some of these numbers in the podcast - or at least I intended to. I'll be giving the score, the number of rushing yards for both teams and the passing yards for both teams in the game.



The numbers for how Tulsa did against the opponents are the opponents' average minus the Tulsa game (i.e. if North Texas gave up 1,500 yards rushing on defense in 12 games, but 300 yards came against Tulsa, then North Texas' average was 100 yards per game and Tulsa was 200 yards above North Texas' defensive average). I rounded to the nearest whole number.



I also compared how those teams did against Tulsa versus their average (i.e. if North Texas ran for 1,500 yards on offense in 12 games but 300 yards came against Tulsa, then North Texas' average was 100 yards per game and Tulsa was 200 yards above North Texas' offensive average).



Tulsa lost to Oklahoma 47-14.

Tulsa scored 14 points which 8 fewer than OU allowed on average.

Tulsa ran for 129 yards which was what OU allowed on average.

Tulsa threw for 271 yards which was 50 yards more than OU allowed.

OU scored 47 points which was 11 points more than OU averaged.

OU ran for 246 yards which was 100 yards more than OU averaged.

OU threw for 417 yards which was 88 yards more than OU averaged.



Tulsa beat Tulane 31-3.

Tulsa scored 31 points which 4 more than Tulane allowed on average.

Tulsa ran for 166 yards which was 15 yards more than Tulane allowed.

Tulsa beat Marshall 59-17.

Tulsa scored 59 points which 34 points more than Marshall allowed on average.

Tulsa ran for 380 yards which was 257 yards more than Marshall allowed.

Tulsa threw for 302 yards which was 64 yards more than Marshall allowed.

Marshall scored 17 points which was 4 points fewer than Marshall averaged.

Marshall ran for 165 yards which was 56 yards more than Marshall averaged.

Marshall threw for 228 yards which was 35 yards more than Marshall averaged.



Tulsa beat UTEP 57-28.

Tulsa scored 57 points which 31 points more than UTEP allowed on average.

Tulsa ran for 266 yards which was 98 yards more than UTEP allowed.

Tulsa threw for 283 yards which was 55 yards more than UTEP allowed.

UTEP scored 28 points which was 4 points more than UTEP averaged.

UTEP ran for 177 yards which was 37 yards more than UTEP averaged.

UTEP threw for 217 yards which was 10 yards more than UTEP averaged.



Tulsa lost to Houston 48-16.

Tulsa scored 16 points which 6 points more than Houston allowed on average.

Tulsa ran for 161 yards which was 3 yards more than Houston allowed.

Tulsa threw for 176 yards which was 24 yards fewer than Houston allowed.

Houston scored 48 points which was 1 point more than Houston averaged.

Houston ran for 84 which was 64 yards fewer than Houston averaged.

Houston threw for 474 yards which was 70 yards more than Houston averaged.



Make of those numbers what you will.

So, if my math/counting is correct in Tulsa's 12 games:

The opponents beat their season average of points scored seven times.

The opponents beat their season average of yards rushing four times.

The opponents beat their season average of yards passing ten times.



Tulsa scored MORE points than their opponents allowed 11 times.

Tulsa ran for MORE yards than their opponents allowed nine times (and the hit average one other time).

Tusla threw for MORE yards than their opponents allowed nine times.

My conclusions -



BYU better come prepared to throw and catch and YAC the football - Ala Hawaii game

Tulsa has a pretty good run defense - not stifling but holds teams to below avg. rushing

Tulsa offense is very balanced and racks up more yards than the avg. their opponents allow

Tulsa, but not to the same extent, scores more than the avg. points their opponents allow



All of these things are very consistent. Surprisingly consistent.



It seems that the offense got stronger as the year progressed compared to what their opponents allowed on average.



Tulsa Offense will be strong. BYU Defense will need to be strong Vs run and especially Vs pass. BYU will need to air it out.

What it shows is that Tulsa scores more than opponents allow on average, but give up more than opponents score on average. In other words, they win with offense.



I believe that the BYU D gives up less than the average on most occasions on D, but not sure how the O fared in the same comparison.



I think we win double digits in the 4th.



BYU 38 Tulsa 27

I think that this Tulsa team looks alot like this year's BYU team numbers wise.. it'll be a close game!

I think 34 is the minimum we have to score just to beat Tulsa. I can't imagine BYU holding Tulsa, with their trick plays and one month to prepare, to less than 31 points.

BYU defense - maybe you can ignore Utah game. Maybe.



But - then - averages are supposed to take care of all that.



I think BYU D overachieves relative to opponent opponents. I think Jake led Offense underachieved, but Riley led offense overachieved.

My quick math adding in my head and dividing by 12 in my head for rounds to - actually, I had to go back and grab a pen and the back side of some wrapping paper scrap.



Tulsa Offense

Passing = 2981/12 = 248.5 YPG

Rushing = 2521/12 = 210 YPG

Total = 458.5 YPG

Points scored = 409/12= 34.1 PPG.



Allowed to Opponents

Passing = 3423/12= 285.25 YPG

Rushing = 1590/12= 132.5 YPG

Total = 417.75 YPG

Points Allowed = 328 /12 = 27.33 PPG



Margin = 6.8 PPG on 40.75 total yard margin. They give up 417.75 YPG but only 27.33 points.

I didn't go back and look at individual games, but Tulsa's 3rd down defense isn't very good. They are ranked 83rd with opponents converting on 42.71% of their 3rd downs. Conversely, BYU is ranked 37th with opponents converting on 36.97% of their 3rd downs.



Offensively, BYU is 3rd on 3rd down, converting on 52.94 % of their 3rd downs. Tulsa is ranked 49th convering on 42.01% of their 3rd downs.



Since the Utah State game, BYU is converting 63.0% of their 3rd downs - which would be best in the nation by nearly nine percentage points.



If Tulsa can't get BYU off the field on 3rd down, it's going to put more pressure on their offense to make plays.
