Future Schedules - SOS

SOS this year was just about right. With decent QB play early and consistent Special Teams play maybe the Defense does not quit VS Utah and BAM - BYU goes 13-0.

Sure swap a UNLV or New Mexico for Idaho State, and hope for a better mix of home and away sites, but this is a SOS we can survive in an off year like 2010 and 2011 and thrive with a team like we had in 2006 or 2009.

But we have to hope Texas, Oregon State, TCU, Ole Miss, UCF, and Utah are having off years - otherwise, this schedule was too ambitious.

Which name opponents can we count on being off their game in 2012?

Could go 11-2 optimistically.

Fighting Irish and Yellow Jackets road games seem to be where SOS will bite the hardest. BSU should be reloading. OSU will improve - but have to play in Provo. Washington State is also improving, but comes to Provo too. Utah may be struggling to find their new identity with a new OC.

BYU QB and WR play should be stellar. TE play should improve. OL may be a little off early. RB and FB similar, slightly off. Overall - Better.

Defense - same or better at LB and DB. DL - maybe slightly off. Overall - Same or Better.

Special Teams - more experienced at kicking and Punting. Returns same or better.

Overall - Better and more consistent.

Coaching - more experienced.

Overall - Better.

We will have some WAC games so it won't be as good as it will in future years. Replace the WAC with teams around 40-70 and I will be happy. If we can avoid any teams around 100 our SOS will look pretty good.

Learn from the SEC. The conference that owns college football.

Play at least 4 absolute cupcakes. Play at least 7 home games or very un-neutral field games. Four or less true road games per year. Only leave the state or at least the time zone a few times each season. Confuse SOS by playing teams in the 70 range instead of the 100 range - either way you almost cannot lose, but it looks better on SOS.

This is boring as HE CC K, but this is how the SEC plays for the NC every single year.

Or try to do it the way other teams keep trying and failing to do it.

While the SEC doesn't compare to the Pac-12 in nonconference scheduling philosophy, most schools in that conference limit their cupcake intake to 3 not 4 games. That's usually due to rivalries.

South Carolina plays Clemson every year.

Florida plays Florida State every year.

Georgia plays Georgia Tech every year.

This year LSU played Oregon and West Virginia. Alabama played Penn State. Ole Miss played us. Georgia played BSU. Arkansas played Texas A&M. Auburn played Clemson, etc.

Although Vandy was better than usual early, add in Vandy, Kentucky, Ole Miss, and maybe even Tennessee and you get to 4 plus cupcakes for every SEC team.

And yes - maybe half of them played one tough OOC opponent. Half. One. Note we went to Ole Miss with no return game. How many of the ones you listed were on the SEC opponent's turf. One and dones and two for ones and un-neutral fields are all part of the championship formula. And then every conference opponent also has a nice, fattened up, record making that win look so much tougher on paper.

This is not an accident. It plays out every year. It works every year. No other conference has been smart enough to take the long-term view and do it.

Someone not traveling can do this more cut and paste justice than I can do via iPhone.

I picked Florida since it is the first team listed under SEC teams on CBS. And Florida has learned the formula as well as any SEC team.

The mighty Gators started out 4-0. FUTK. Plowed right through - Fl Intnl, UAB, Tenn, and Kentucky. First three at home. Kentucky was the first of their four road games. Four.

Then came ALAG - Alabama at home, LSU on the road, Auburn on the road, and Georgia at home. So after working out the kinks early and building up needed confidence, Florida was perfect in this stretch - a perfect 0-4.

And then came Vandy at home and Florida is 5-4.

But even Florida has to travel on occasion so they went all the way to South Carolina for that 4th road trip to even their record at 5-5 with that loss.

But SEC fans do not tolerate losing seasons - so they were treated to Furman at home in November and went back up 6-5 before losing at home in that one tough OOC game you mentioned to go 6-6 and become Bowl eligible.

I kind of wish Florida was coming over to play us in the Armed Forces Bowl. But, then, Flirida does not leave it's own time zone. Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, and South Carolina is as far and as often as Florida travels. This strategy makes a win over Florida by Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida State look like a sweet win over a bowl-eligible SEC team. This is why they get credit for such a tough in-conference schedule.

Florida International, UAB, and Furman were well paid for coming to town and bending over. Tennessee, Kentucky, and Vandy actually get return visits and big SEC bucks. Which of those six wins impress you most?

Even with our woes this year - we could have fared as well or better. I bet Ole Miss would like to have gotten a piece of Florida this season to fatten up their own record.

Vandy, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Tennessee >>>>> New Mexico, UNLV, Wyoming, Colorado State

BYU always beat those MWC teams by much more than the 1 point we beat Ole Miss by.

I agree that the SEC can be overrated at times, but not by as much as some would like to think. Some of you don't think LSU or Alabama should be playing for a title game, but LSU beat #3 Oregon, #25 Miss St., #16 West Virginia, #17 Florida, #20 Auburn, #2 Alabama, #3 Arkansas, and #14 Georgia this year. Alabama beat #23 Penn State, #14 Arkansas, #12 Florida, and #24 Auburn.

If BYU had either of those resumes, we wouldn't be saying, "yeah, but those wins were against highly overrated SEC teams." We'd be saying that BYU should be in the BCS title game.
C

OK - you want Bama. They got six cakes too, but at least they travelled five times and crossed a couple of state lines once in doing so. They did go to Penn State. They did beat good teams - except LSU.

KPNA.

Kent State, @Penn State, North Texas, and Arkansas.

FVMT

@Florida, Vandy, @Mississippi, and Tennessee.

LMGA

LSU, @Mississippi State, Georgia Southern, and @Auburn.

Depending how you count your cakes - Florida is cake IMHO - Alabama ate 6-7 cakes enroute to playing a team they already lost to for the BCS NC.

Apparently wins over Penn State, Arkansas, Mississippi State, and Auburn with their fattened up records gets you that.

If BYU had run the table, wins over Texas, TCU, Utah, and Utah State are not that far short and we could have matched their loss to LSU.

Just Sayin - SEC knows how to shine the apple - scheduling.

Alabama has no business even being in the same breath as the BCS Championship, and I haven't seen one argument that makes any sense saying why they should be, I'd love to see one, if you have one.

As for LSU, they are my #1 team in the nation right now. They definitely deserve to be playing for a BCS championship.

Speaking of the BCS (BS) Championship, if Alabama wins this game, then it will be the BCS National champ but not the champ of its own conference. Does that make sense to anyone? :bug: :gross:

Iirc, Bama did not even win it's own division let alone it's own conference.

Thus LSU who had to play in the Conf Championship Game let Alabama rest and relax and prepare for the rematch.

LSU deserves to be in the NCG. Alabama does not. The fact that someone above touted their win over #12 Florida shows how ludicrous the SEC rankings get. Florida, at 4-0 and having eaten 4 cups of cake, may have been #12 before losing 4 in a row enroute to a 6-6 finish.

BYU does not either - and I agree that MWC cupcakes have extra frosting - but does it really matter how much frosting is on your cupcakes as long as they are cupcakes - especially given that the SEC eats their cake at home.

Oklahoma state should be in the BCS Championship game vs LSU, that is the bottom line. The SEC is getting WAY too much credit here. If Alabama beats LSU, they should just give the championship to OK State if they also win their Bowl game since we will have 3 teams in the top 3 all with one loss.

I love the BCS logic - Alabama beating LSU on a neutral field is worth more than LSU beating Alabama at Alabama.

No I don't have a good argument for Alabama, but there's no good argument for why any other team should be in above Alabama right now either (which is why we desperately need a playoff). I know some people like the whole "Alabama had their chance" argument, but is OSU-who lost to an unranked team-OBVIOUSLY better than Alabama? I don't see Alabama losing to Iowa State on any field. Also, aren't you making Alabama's case by admitting that LSU is most likely the best team in the country? Or are you saying OSU would likely lose in 2 over times whereas Alabama lost in "only" one overtime ;)

There's also precedent...e.g. BYU lost to UCLA in the regular season on 07 or 08 and then beat them in the Vegas bowl. Should we have been excluded from that bowl because we lost to them in the regular season? Did losing in the regular season mean we couldn't beat them later in a bowl game? Clearly not, right?

I do understand that to most fans, OSU would be the more interesting matchup since they haven't plays this season, but if this game is about matching up the two BEST teams, nobody can make a clear case who really should be playing LSU without a playoff.

Also, consider...based on what you've said, the only difference between "doesn't deserve to be in the same breath as the BCS championship" and "definitely deserves to be playing in the championship" is a missed field goal. That's a very strong opinion to base on such a fine line.

The one and only undefeated team in the land deserves to go. If they beat other ranked teams including #2 on the road - definitely deserve to go. They could have survive a field goal and still had a chance in OT. Oh and they won their division and their conference. Definitely deserve to go even though the SEC is over-rated because SEC is still very good.

But they did miss that field goal, and they missed it at home.

Either the regular season means something or it doesn't. Either you win your conference, and by extension your division, or you don't play for a championship.

Comparing the Las Vegas bowl in 07 to the BCS championship game this year is apples and oranges since the Las Vegas bowl champion is not crowned the "best team in College football" after a win or loss. If Alabama wins the game, are they #1 even though they didn't win their own conference? At least OK state won their conference and would not have to defend that if they won the BCS championship game. There needs to be an exception to the BCS if they are going to continue this nonsense that two teams from the same conference cannot rematch in the championship game and you can't get into the championship game if you don't win your own conference. Like Hawkwing said, there is no defense for this. It is stupid.
