CougarbibJake Heaps fans will want to see Dayne Crist keep Webb off the field next season. For many reasons, Heaps will want to see Crist play well enough to keep Webb on the bench. First, Heaps fans will want Crist to show that an outsider can come in and quickly meld with and lead the team to improved success. Jake will then want to repeat and build upon that success in 2013 and 2014.
But Webb is interesting. He is a sophomore. He started as a freshman. He is a 64% passer who throws for an equal number of TDs and interceptions. He is a bit fumble prone. Maybe Spiff can pull up a PER on him. As near as I can tell, he is slightly better than Heaps after two years except he has a horrible W/L record playing Texas, Okie, Okie State, K-State, etc., week in and week out.
If Crist beats out this 2-year starter and keeps him on the bench, Heaps and Webb will likely be of equal experience in 2013. Both will have started for two years in a system different than what Weiss will put in, and both will have watched Crist run it for a year.
IDK if Webb has a RS or will only have 1 year of eligibility left in 2013. Anyone know?
But, if Crist does not beat out Webb, Heaps will be competing with a 3-year starter in 2013.
Heaps also has to hope that Crist plays well enough to give KU the best chance to win, but that games are close with no opportunity for the back-up QB to see the field. Heaps fans will not want Webb to gain on-the-field experience in the new system while Jake is side-lined.
In any event, Webb is likely the back-up in 2012 and not red-shirted even if he still has an RS year. KU is likely on the wrong end of several blowouts. Webb probably gets some slop time reps or beats out Crist at some point.
