BYU in bowl games against an 8 win opponent

Here's something to digest over the next week while we wait for the game.

This is the 16th time BYU plays a bowl against an 8+ win team



Only the second time for Bronco in this era of watered down bowls.

I love Ty Detmer, so don't take this comment the wrong way. Much gets posted in the way of criticism of recent teams players, QBs, and coaches not measuring up to the greats and the good ole days. Detmer, Edwards, McMahon, and Young are the poster children for days gone by.



And, yet, what was Detmer's Bowl Record?



Freshman - beat Eric Bienemy and a solid Colorado team in the Freedom Bowl in Anaheim in a come from behind - low scoring - affair.



Soph - moral victory for scoring a lot of points and yards Vs a decent Penn State team with it's vaunted Jerry Sandusky defense - but a loss none- the-less.



Junior - blowout loss to a decent Texas A&M team on the heels of a blowout loss to Hawaii on the heels of winning The Heisman Trophy.



Senior - Ty or Tie to a very good Iowa Hawkeye Team in a low

scoring affair.



Luckily Ty got that win over number 1 Miami that vaulted him to the Heisman Trophy before he lost the next five games after winning the Heisman and also tied 2 or 3 games his senior season. Otherwise, he would be remembered differently.



Likewise, you can find an imperfection or two in the careers of the other greats. I guess they were human - after all!

Comparing bowl victories from past and present is not fair at all. I don't have the numbers in front of me from the past, but this year there are 75 bowl eligible teams and 70 going to bowl games. That's a lot of 6-6 garbage.

I really do not mind 6-6 teams in bowls - if they play each other. I just hate to see BSU get stuck playing one of them in a mismatch. By bowl time - if it was not drawn up by previous agreements - it should be easy to create exciting games between evenly matched teams.



If it were done that way - go ahead and add 2 or 3 bowls for the teams left out. Call them Garbage Bowl sponsored by the mafia run Waste Mgmt and Toilet Bowl sponsored by Tidy Bowl toilet cleaner, and the Leftovers Bowl sponsored by Tupperware or Saran Wrap.

In Bronco's first year at BYU, we were one of those "garbage" bowls teams, and we were all thrilled to be one. We lost, of course, because we were a barely average team.



I don;t care about there being more bowls. I only care what bowl we get into and who the opponent is. Playing 7-5 teams sucks. I prefer to play 8 wins+. Luckily we got that this year. that did not happen every year even in the LV Bowl.

Last year we were also one of those teams, but on a roll and enjoyed putting a little frosting and weak sauce on a sweet cupcake. On paper, that game seemed like an even match, especially given the location - but UTEP was skidding into the Bowl and BYU was rising up.



So we got a blowout that was painful for UTEP fans to watch, satisfying to most BYU fans, and probably of absolutely no interest to anyone else except possibly U Trolls.



But I was sure glad there was a place for us to go Bowlin.



Also, some of the garbage bowls so far this year have been quite competitive and fun for fans of those teams and true cfb junkies to watch.

Teams like Okie, Okie State, Boise State, and Houston had their way with Tulsa. They would all be favored to beat BYU as well.



SMU, who beat TCU, would be the signature win for Tulsa in 2011. I think BYU would be favored to beat SMU as well.



Tulsa will have a near home field advantage. BYU will have momentum. Both have something to prove.

Tulsa will have a proximity advantage, but Tulsa also doesn't have near the number of fans that BYU does, probably in part to having the smallest enrollment of any div 1a school, and BYU fans travel well particularly in Texas. I expect the fan distribution to be very even.
