Mark Richt sounds like a real stand-up guy. If only all bosses were like this:

Georgia's investigation into the matter determined that Richt made several impermissible payments:



• To former recruiting assistant Charlie Cantor, $10,842 over an 11-month period through March 2011.



• To former linebackers coach John Jancek, $10,000 in 2009 after the previous university administration declined to give Jancek a raise when he turned down a coaching opportunity elsewhere.



• To director of player development John Eason, $6,150 in 2010 when his new administrative position called for a salary reduction after he stepped down from an assistant coaching position on Richt's staff.



Richt also paid a total of $15,227 when the school -- citing "difficult economic conditions being experienced by the University" -- refused bowl bonuses to 10 non-coach staff members: director of sports medicine Ron Courson, video coordinator Joe Tereshinski, strength coaches Keith Gray and Clay Walker, football operations manager Josh Brooks, high school liaison Ray Lamb and four administrative assistants.



He also paid a five-year longevity bonus of $15,337.50 due to tight ends coach Dave Johnson when he took a job at West Virginia in 2008 just short of his fifth anniversary coaching at UGA and $6,000 to fired defensive ends coach Jon Fabris in 2010 when Fabris was unable to find a job after his UGA severance package expired.

I guess you can say he's the kind of boss you would like to have. I can't even get my boss to take me to lunch.

Yeah... so the school can pay them that money but the coach can't? The coach can presumably take a cut in his pay and make sure the money goes to them, but he cannot pay them himself? These aren't student athletes, these are people ALREADY BEING PAID to do thier job.

I can see how these are violations. Hey, Mr. Recruiting Assistant, here's a "bonus" of more than $10,000 for all the hard work you do for us. Oh, you can use this cash however you feel you need to, to help next year's recruiting as well.

But couldn't he do that anyway? We can pay him $10,000.00 more a year as an annual salary, but he cannot get a bonus? So the magic is that the payments are spread out over time?

The only flaw with this is that he gave to to people that had left the program and to a bunch of very low on the totem pole employees. It is pretty obvious he feels he could easily afford it and wanted to help out his employees. Also, I've not heard of coaches paying players. All the payments I have heard about involved boosters.

Seems to me he could give the money to whomever he pleased as long as it wasn't illegal and didn't involve payments to student athletes. Maybe they should run down to all the K-Marts and see if he paid off any layaway accounts. Then they could really fry him. My respect for Coach RIcht has just skyrocketed.

This is a proposal to pay people who are amatures... Coach Richt was paying non-amatures, professionals. Again, the school can give the staffer a bonus, but the head coach can't?

Correct. What I was showing with this is article is several coaches have gone on the record of being willing to pay players from their own pockets. What's to stop a coach from giving a bonus to a staffer to only have that staffer pass it along to players or recruits, especially when one of the recipients is a recruiting assistant.



It's very admirable that Richt was trying to reward his assistants when the school wouldn't. But this is a dangerous slope.

I don't know how slippery the slope is... the athletic department knew all about Richt's payments, and UGA's been completely transparent with the NCAA.



If teams want to pay players, they're going need to come up with better schemes to funnel money to players than to have the coach paying staffers out of pocket.



I wasn't really a fan of Mark Richt before, but I am now.

but if he had the school keep the money out of his paycheck and give it to the staffers it would be ok? Coaches all the time negotiate wage raises for their staff and forego additional money for them selves. If this is a slippery slope, it clearly isn't the start of it, it's a good ways down the slope

If it went down that way - UGA withheld money from his paycheck and gave it to others - I would be okay with that, and I don't think that would be on my proverbial slope. But if he was cutting guys a check on his own, that would concern me.

I have no problem with that as long as the money was not going someplace else that it should not. However there could be tax issues with the IRS.
