Will BYU Be Better, Worse, or The Same in 2012 - Poll

In 2010 - some expected great things inspite of losing Hall, 2 TEs, Unga, etc., etc. Not me. Rebuild. In 2011 - we all expected to see improvement right away from 2010. Oops. Then Riley saved the season and the program vs USU. and 9 or 10 wins is definitely better than 7. Actually, 10 would be really nice. Right in line with my most optimistic expectation for 2011.



So - will 2012 be the same, worse, or better?



QB - Riley Nelson returns. Some think he reached his ceiling long ago. They got surprised. Many think he has reached it now. Time will tell. WIll he stay healthy? If not, can Lark get it done? A full year of a healthy Riley Nelson should net an improvement even if he plays no better at all in 2012 - because we only got 2/3 of a year of him in 2011 and none when it mattered most early on. QB - better.



RBs. Many ranked on JJ all year or two. Some liked Kariya but saw him as journeyman at best. Most expected way more out of Juice than we got. Alisa was a pleasant surprise as was Falslev as a slot receiver. We will miss JJ and Kariya. Juice will not be the full answer. Alisa will possibly replace Kariya. Will Foote with his foot speed or a newbie step up. Inexperience. Same at very best. Most likely a little bit worse.



FB. Not a strength in 2011. Newbies need to step up. Answer not obvious due to inexperience. Same.



OL. Disappointed many in 2011. Actually, national experts think more highly of it. We lose some key players. Retain others. Newbies need to step up. Answer not obvious. Inexperience. Big concern on Offense. Worse.



TE - they are all back. Hopefully healthy. More experience. Can't help but continue to improve. Definitely better.



WR - almost all are back. Jacobsen was a disappointment. He missed my more optimistic forecast. Apo regained his stride late. Hoff was super. Others contributed. WIll OC show up as a WR or on defense? More experience all around. Definitely better.



Special Teams - punter and kicker will both be more experienced. Hopefully, more consistent. Flashes of brilliance in 2010 but horrible at times. Returners all back. More experienced. Better.



DL - key losses. Answer not clear. Worse.



LB - How do you replace Pendleton? Lots of talent returning. Experienced. Depth. Others will step up. Same or Better and they were great in 2011.



Safety. Lost uale. Most do not care. And yet - BYU TV broadcast team Blainee Awards gave him Unsung Hero award - one of five MVP type awards. He won player of the week for Independents at least once. He was defensive MVP at least once. Had a bunch of interceptions and big hits. Was described as Defensive Captain in the award. But he ain't no NFL prospect by any stretch and we have had better. Newbie in the wings. Inexperienced. Sorensen - more experienced. Same or better.



Corners - more experienced and coming on strong to end this year. Depth. Better



So overall - U make the Call!

I went with better even though I worry about an injury to Riley derailing the offense. Our offense is always only as good as our QB and we do not have the running backs to change that. OL is my biggest concern. Fullback is a bit of a question due to inexperience. TE and Receivers should be a strength. JD, Hoff, and Apo will have a big year if healthy. A TE will step up. Defense will be solid but DL is a concern.



I voted better. Our record may be the same or even worse - the schedule is tougher - most likely.

Better. Senior QB with leadership ability. The teams proved they will go to battle for Riley.

Better on the condition that Riley stays healthy.



I am not as worried about the Oline because an elusive QB can make up for poor O-line play at times. WRs will be great. Alisa will be a good back. Isn't Pritchard coming back as a full back? If so, he will be very good. The Defensive Line has a lot of depth, and they are supported by an outstanding linebacking corps. The secondary is a question mark, but what's new?



Overall, I EXPECT Senior Nelson to put Utah away, and HOPE for another 10 win season (I like to count chickens) in what will be a more difficult schedule. Same results versus better competition = better team.

Better, because I'm an optimist, because we know who our QB is, because young guys are stepping up, and because Bronco and Doman continue to learn and grow as coaches.

I went the same, because our talent is pretty much all returning from the skill positions. We were a couple of plays away from being 11-1 right now. I think next year we can make those handful of plays that cost us in the Texas, TCU games. So maybe that means we'll be better. But I think our record might be about the same, even though we might be better.

I put better.



We have a sr qb returning who runs the offense the way it should be run. Our Ocoordinator has a year of play calling under his belt and looked to be improving game by game. Our D is going to be back and better. We have a tougher sched and may end up with the same amount of losses but that doesn't imply being worse or the same.

This was my thought.



I think the team will be better next year, but our schedule is tougher so i think it balances out. Oh, and the odds of Riley getting hurt are fairly high, and I think that would really torpedo our year.

Depends on your definition of a better. Is it record? Is it how play win or lose? I think we'll play better overall compared to this year. We won't be trying out a new offense. Younger players had another year to learn and grow. If it will equal a better record, I don't know. It definitely could, but schedule should theoretically be tougher.

Defense will be better and offense should be better. My only question as far as improvement goes is with the O-line.

Same. No reason to think the BM can do better with next years schedule than this years'. I'm sure I'll get all stoked going into next season considering we probably have the best WR combo in the country, but as soon as we play anyone decent/relevant/important, history says my excitement will be dashed...again.

Better, here's why:



Offense:

OL, BYU's OL is always a BYU OL, not always great, but rather decent. We have some very talented OL players coming on, coming up, and coming back.



RB, will be better. If not for Alisa, the RBs would have been a big disappointment this year, But Alisa, Prichard, Juice, Hine, Foote, definitely better



WR, these guys are outstanding receivers, and will be better next year. They have size, speed and hands. We will come to love Apo and Coffman the next two years.



TE, with all the talent at TE, if they are not better next year, they should all have the scholarships jerked. There is talent, size and speed there, but 2010 they were all freshmen, and a disappointment. 2011 showed these guys can play. Friel is probably the sleeper in this bunch, he is a stud with hands, size, speed, and he may outplay all the others next year.



QB, Riley has no ceiling, he will be better, Lark will be better, and we have a couple of outstanding QBs coming in next year that will be ready to take over in 2013.



This year was a bit of an enigma. Heaps goes stale, performs worse than last year, can't hit receivers...a real puzzle. His malaise cost us at least two wins, Nelson will get those two losses back next year with a couple of surprising wins.



Juice is flat, has a death in the family, had some other issues, Pritchard goes down before he even gets started, but he is a stud, but BYU is loaded at RB, and they will shine next year and the year after. BYU will average more rushing yards next year than this.



Everyone thought the offense would come out smokin this year, they didn't, offense was a big dud. My guess is, because we will have a senior QB, outstanding RBs, experienced WR and TEs, the offense WILL come out smokin next year, and it will give us a couple of wins most people expect us to lose.
