Brandon Gurney from Deseret News/KLS/TBS reports that Brandon Fanaika will make his decision on his school near to the February signing date.

What I'm curious is, Fanaika’s offer list now includes the University of Utah, Utah State University, BYU, University of Arizona, Arizona State University, University of Washington, Washington State University, UCLA, Auburn, Arkansas and Stanford University. Do all of those schools really hold a scholie that late in the game for a 3-star (per Scout) offensive lineman?

I cannot see all those schools holding a scholarship for a guy - unless they think this kid is the next re-incarnation of Superman! Some will - just my humble opinion - most won't. If they can lock up a good athlete that fills a need, they will use that schollie.

By the way - I am very interested in seeing how UCLA does in recruiting with their new Head Coach Jim Mora. I think he will still have a difficult time. UCLA has a long & difficult road to travel.

To me - the big question is - how will this affect the "X" man (Xavier Sua Filo) who is coming home from his mission - and the entire coaching staff that recruited him has been fired! Will he switch schools to BYU? Ah well .......

Here's to hoping. If Bronco is living right, magic will happen!

I wouldn't hold my breath on that one as he received permission from a GA and his mission president to come home early on 17 December so he could start school on 4 January. UCLA had informed him he had to be home for that semester to have his scholarship honored. That was a decision made in September, before the UCLA staff was fired. I don't know if that will have an impact on him now or not, but something tells me he'll be there at UCLA.

I think this guy is his cousin and word is they could be a package deal.

Fanaika might not be worth holding a spot for but if it influenced Poutasi some schools might take the chance I guess.

I hope when he gets the news that when all his recruiting staff have been fired he will take a few moments & reconsider the Y. It would be spectacular.

I dont think there is any chance of X coming. If I remember correct when he commited to UCLA out of high school he gave 2 main reason of going there becuase of Norm Chow and wanting to play in the PAC10. So I hate to say it but Utah right now would have a better chance of landing him then the Y. If he was coming to BYU we would have heard about it by now.

As for UCLA's new coaching staff holding a scoli for him. Theres no way they wouldnt honor that agreement. He was the PAC10 freshman of the year before he left, they'd be crazy not to have a scoli waiting for him.

My question is is UCLA going to know how to properly handle a return missionary and his conditioning when he gets back?

We need elite offensive lineman. byu needs to land this guy and pray X is converted ( tic ) on his mission.

Landing those two with mathews already a part of the fold would be sweet.

Word is, he has reopened his recruiting, and is now open to BYU, Utah and Stanford. I think he is mission first, then play, so we have a spot for him that way.

Let's hope we land him. IF we lose both Lutui and Fanaika to Utah, that will leave a mark.

X is already back at UCLA. Also the rumor is that they are having a very good recruiting year. There is a previous thread that discussed this.

UCLA ALWAYS recruits well.

2012: #14

2011: #45

2010: #9

2009: #14

2008: #13

2007: #40

2006: #17

From 2006 onward, UCLA has had TWO winning seasons, both of which were BARELY winning seasons (7 wins each). If you ever want hard evidence that high recruiting classes aren't magically spun into BCS bids, UCLA is your prime example.

But yeah, X has said recently that he's not leaving UCLA anytime soon.

B. Gurney just received a text from Brandon Fanaika reading, "BYU is in the pic now"...just passing that along. Apparently reconsidering his offer with Stanford - wants to play close to home and mama.

This snippet was posted by B. Gurney in DN as well:

PLEASANT GROVE — Brandon Fanaika, the state's top offensive lineman prospect who previously committed to Stanford, says he's now reconsidering just days before letter of intent day.

Following an official visit to Utah on Jan. 20, the 6-foot-3, 290-pound prospect went public that he was still considering the Utes and could very well sign with them this Wednesday. Today he sent out a text stating, "BYU is in the pic now."

BYU offered Fanaika following his attendance at Junior Day this past June. Fanaika reported as many as nine offers and is rated as a three-star prospect by both rivals and scout.com.

To me it is interesting that he posted that BYU is in the pic now right after a visit to UofU.

Doesn't ring truthful to me.

Does it sound like he is trying to get a scholarship offer from someone?

He is also stating that there will be a package deal involving his brother (a USU LB) that would transfer to the school that he selects.

Is his brother any good??

He was a 3-star and only Utah and USU offered out of high school according to Rivals.

That is what's weird about his "package deal" thing. Does Brandon think Stanford will simply admit his brother?

I highly doubt Stanford would be interested in his brother. They have an outstanding team and no problem getting top recruits.
