WCC not looking as bad

There was some weeping and wailing over leaving the MWC in basketball, but as time goes on that may change.



First, there is the general stability of the WCC. It is a conference that hasn't changed in a long time and is unlikely to change significantly in the future. There are rumors of adding another school or two, but no one (besides BYU) has eyes for another conference. The MWC members, meanwhile, are scrambling like rats on a sinking ship. TCU is gone, SDSU is gone, Boise State is gone, and the WAC is trying to lure back Nevada, Fresno State and Hawaii. And any of the remaining teams would leave in a heart beat if a BCS conference came calling. Except maybe Air Force, who seems to have turned down the Big East. But this could be part of the Cadets plan to go independent like their military academy brethren.



Currently the MWC is rated as the 5th best BBall conference by Sagarin, but the 41, 63 and 109 schools are leaving the MWC. All to be replaced by Nevada (112) and Fresno State (153).



The MWC may still be ranked higher than the WCC by Sagarin, but they will be limited to one power program. UNLV ~ Gonzaga. SMU > New Mexico. The rest...who cares.

It's strange when you see the WAC and MWC deteriorating from what they were really only because of the "mafioso" conferences that had to control all the traffic and money.



The MWC was born of a good concept and was on leading edge technology when they went to create the first conference network. The problem was their bed partners were of ill-repute.



I do like that the WCC is a very stable conference with members that are very similar. I feel though at times like the 6'0" sixth-grader that looks too tall to be 11-12 years old. Not that we dominate all of the WCC sports at the same time each year, but I don't see it being much different than in the MWC where overall BYU sports dominated the majority of conference championships over time. Just different resources, somewhat like a lot of the BCS teams vs. BYU.
