Breaking down the Baylor Bears



They are 7-0 but haven’t played stiff competition. Their best wins are at Northwestern and at home against San Diego St.



This team is built around length and athletic ability: Jones III (6’11”), Acy (6’7”) and Miller (6’9”). They also bring Anthony Jones (6’10”) off the bench. Jones III and Miller are expected to be 1st round NBA picks in the next draft.



They play a 2-3 zone almost exclusively. Normally Jones III and Miller are on the wings with Acy in the middle. Acy is an explosive leaper, shotblocker (3.1 bpg) and dunker.

Jones III is a great talent and primarily a face-up player and a better athlete than BYU has seen. The past season he was know for being a headcase and not putting in the work defensively.

Miller is more of a prototypical nba SF. Smooth and skilled and long than explosive.

Pierre Jackson (5’10”) is a good quick point guard to compliment their bigs.



Heslip (6’2”) is a three point specialist taking 6.7 3pt/game and making 2.7.



On offense BYU is going to have a difficult time entering the ball into the post against the 2-3 zone. Hartsock is going to need to his the foul line jumper and reverse the ball to 3pt shooters. Maybe Davies will finally hit his 15 footer a couple of times. I expect that BYU will get chances to run and will need to be carefully in shot selection as Baylor’s athletic ability should help them in the open court. We are going to have to drive the ball hard and take it into Acy’s chest. Otherwise he will block several shots.



The matchups defensively are going to be difficult for BYU. In man defense I expect Hartsock will probably be put on Acy. It will be matchup of the two toughest players. I expect Davies will guard Jones III and get into foul trouble so we will need Sharp and Austin to be ready. Abouo is going to have his hands full with Miller. We are going to need to help our big out in the rebounding and by digging down on their post ups.



Carlino will finally be eligible. Sharp is battling a ankle injury.



I look forward to another BYU win at home.

We have played a tougher schedule and should be more disciplined and intense. Other than Heslip they have much of 3pt game. If we are generating and hitting open 3's we could blow this game wide open.



We have a size advantage at the 1 and the 2. I wonder if we will be able use that to fastbreak.

2-3 zone? We tend to shoot better at home, so if we're hitting our shots we'll have a chance.

If by hitting outside shots so teams can't sag on the post entry pass then yes, you are correct.

BYU over Baylor, Saturday: I got one right last week, sensing Dayton could pull off the upset of Alabama. Well, I'm sensing a possible upset by the Cougars. Baylor has more talent, no question. And the Bears did dispatch Northwestern on the road and hold a decided advantage in the frontcourt. But BYU is suddenly playing really well with a win over Oregon in Salt Lake City as the highlight of the four-game win streak. The Cougars are getting solid play out of Noah Hartsock inside and Charles Abouo on the perimeter. If BYU is going to get national attention prior to the WCC schedule, it will have to occur with a win over the Bears in what should be a crazed Marriott Center. I think the Cougars will get it.

Baylor is probably the most athletic team in the country, but they are not the most skilled. BYU will have to execute and fundamental them to death.

Their freshman Duece Bello is a stud check out his highlights on youtube if you would like to kill a few minutes with some ridiculous dunks.

Is Jones III the BB playing counterpart to Griffin III?

Kentucky is far more athletic top to bottom. Washington is very atheltic. But your point is taken that their 3 big guys are far more athletic than ours.

Wow Baylor is playing very physical pressure man D. When somebody is able to drive Acy swats is out of there. I wonder who they are going to put Acy on. Hartsock or Davies?



I think Davies or Hartsock will be to post Miller or Jones III. But Acy would be tougher.

At least we get to add Carlino for this game. That would give us another capable defender at 2 in Winder. We could have probably used CC for this game. We're going to have to speed them up and shoot well from the outside. Plus, every one on our team is going to have to crash the boards because we won't have that size advantage and thus less second chance points

I have been thinking more about defensive matchups for Miller and Jones III.



Davies is likely to be in foul trouble if he has to defend Miller or Jones III on the perimeter.



Austin might have enough quickness and length to do a good job. But defending on the perimeter is going to be out of his comfort zone.



I worry about Hartsock getting in to foul trouble.



Abouo is going to have a hard time at 6'5" versus 6'9" or 6'11".



IMO our best chance is to put Davies on Acy and tell him to box out, box out and box out.



Hartsock on Jones III and tell him to play a couple of steps off.



Miller is skilled and tall but skinny. Abouo may be able to get up into have chest and have enough strength to move him off the block.



Rogers' length is going needed as well. He needs to be ready to play big minutes.



Walton was killing Bethune-Cookman because no one would help off their bigs and he could get by their guards every time. Cusick needs help every time. We might need to keep him off the court.



This game is going to challenge us. Oregon was atheltic but not as big or as skilled. We need to play a game as efficient to have a chance.

Will be hard to double team down low. Our guards are going to have to help out a lot.



My guess is we'll go with our zone. Guards will have to play tough D to deny the entry passes.



Davies will probably take Acy. I think that's our best chance.



We are going to have to shoot lights out from 3 point land. If we can trade 2s for 3s than we could pull it off. I doubt we out muscle them down low, so 3 pointers and points off turnovers will be critical.



I am worried about our rebounding. So, we'll have to be dead on.



I suspect Baylor will double Noah. He'll have to do what he did at Utah and step out or pass it off rather than do his best Davies impression and try to force it.



Big time shooting from Rogers, Zylstra and Abouo is needed.
