GunkGonzaga got beat on their home court by an unranked Michigan St.
Watched the game late Sat. night. While I know it's better for us that Gonzaga win and be ranked when we face them, I have to admit I kind of liked seeing Gonzaga get beat on their home court.
This was the third Gonzaga game I've watched this season. A few observations:
1 - Sacre is good, but he's a bit overrated. Have to play tough on him, but if you put a body on him he has trouble. Give him an inch and he'll take it, so no cheating on him; can't play the ball when he has it but rather his shoulders. He struggles when doubled, isn't an aggressive rebounder and I'm still not impressed with his defense. Again, his feet seem nailed to the floor.
2 - Stockton should start. I have no idea why Gonzaga doesn't start David Stockton. He's the better PG. Not flashy, but tremendously smart. Picks his shots wisely and does a better job with the ball. Gonzaga seems lost when he's not on the court.
3 - Harrison is either a force to be reckoned with or a no show.
4 - Can't leave Gonzaga open at the 3 point line. Contain Sacre and deny shots behind the arc and Gonzaga is stiffled.
5 - Poor passing. Gonzaga's guards, including Stockton, are prone to making poor passes. They seem to have completely forgotten about the bounce pass and tend to pass high, allowing defenders to deflect passes. This will boad well for us as we love to get our hands in the passing lanes.
More I watch Gonzaga the more I think we have a better than average shot of beating them not only in Provo but on their home court too. Gonzaga has won the WCC championship something like 11 times in a row. Would love nothing more than to end that streak.
