Which BYU Team Will Excell Most in Calendar Year 2012?

A new Year starts in about 3 weeks. Basketball will hit full stride and football will prepare for Fall. But there are other things goin on too. Volleyball. Baseball. Soccer. Rugby. Golf. Other stuff. I won't list them all - If you pick one I do not list in the poll - go with Other and elaborate. You can change your vote if you change your mind.



They need to make noise on a national stage.



Be sure to post what you picked and why. For some choices, you will need to comment which specific sport and whether it will be women or men. Focus is 1/1/2012 to 12/31/2012.

I am thinking the Women's Basketball team is loaded right now. They will bring great exposure. If you have not seen them play - watch them. Go in person if you can - otherwise BYU TV. Volleyball - Men is highly ranked iirc.

Lamely, I don't know much about the volleyball team. Talk of NC? Awesome.

But as for major sports, if RN stays healthy and all year ,and ha snt hit his ceiling,the football team will outperform the bball team, which is solid and will go Dancing again this year, but not likely go past first round.

I saw the womens bball team beat Arizona in hawaii. Actually, very entertaining. Fun team to watch. I hope they big dance this year also.

Other: The Cougar Lacrosse Team is defending national champions, and with Michigan moving up to D1, the Cougs have a great chance to repeat.

Mens volleyball has preseason vote #1 for the league which means they are the preseason favorite with 3 all americans. However they don't get much coverage nationally. If you are looking for exposure, mens basketball after last year.

Drop soccer and Rugby would get my vote.



BYUs rugby team consistently places 1st or 2nd place (always losing to Cal) in the country. Remember that Cal have a bunch of burn-out scholly players, and EVERY BYU player pays his own way. BYU has a fantastic rugby program and in my opinion overshadows football's performances easily over the last 7 years. Easily. I know that is crazy considering rugby has a very tiny select fan base, but fact lots of Ws come their way. What's nice about Rugby are the consistent blowouts (LY BYU beat Utah St 114-3 or something crazy) and the game is fast like basketball. I hate the soccer league and don't care for the sport much, but FB to me, at least in the past year, has really slowed down in excitement level and time it takes to watch a game.



So my vote: Rugby. BYU will go undefeated and have a chance at upsetting Cal.

Then, BYU basketball (men or women's. Both are really good, I dont know much about the lady folk, but they beat 2 big names in Hawaii.

I played with a couple players in 2006 just for fun and got an earful of how good they were, I went to two games and BYU lost both of them. I was forced to not go to the CSU game and just lost touch after that.

Should all be competitive and entertaining. Maybe other sports too. Hopefully fans support all of them.



I learned a few things from posting this. Seeing how good Women's basketball is this year triggered me to post this.

What about the cross country teams? They are separate from track, so I picked other. Both are perennial top 25 teams experiencing a step up in competition with the WCC. The men were WCC champs, 4th in the nation this last year. This is an NCAA ranking going up against a lot more teams than the rugby, men's volleyball, or lacrosse teams go up against so I think a top 5 finish is more impressive.



I would like to see men's and women's rugby become NCAA sponsored, and to see our lacrosse team compete in the NCAA ranks. Same with men's soccer, which seems to be falling off a bit of late. My guess is BYU will sponsor women's rowing to make a place for men's soccer since the WCC hosts both sports.

This won't happen anytime soon. It's the whole reason the last coach got canned.

It's a tricky poll because I think exposure and national attention should be taken into account when considering which team will excel most. I love the basketball team, but they just don't seem to get much love when Jimmerless. I think it's because they're just considered a bunch of overachieving white boys, but I imagine our tourney record doesn't help. All of that said (man I'm long winded today) the football team will still get more coverage and should do well.



P.S. I wish some of our other sports would get more attention because v-ball, rugby, lacrosse, etc. are all a blast to watch.
