Part of the problem is that so many things this year have been non-football - between realignment, Sandusky, other scandals, the personal side of Jake vs. Riley, yeah, there's been a lot to follow. It's just not very fun to follow.

The end of your list, with all of our solid players on both sides of the ball, did get me excited. A related tangent - watching the basketball game tonight, I was thinking how the last 2 years at BYU have been defined by superstars - Jimmer on the court, and what we hoped Jake would be on the field (and what he seemed to be at the end of 2010).

After watching BYU play tough, hard-nosed TEAM basketball tonight, I started wondering if maybe this could be a sea change for BYU sports on both teams. Looking at the identity our football team has started to take, it seems similar - tough, physical players on both sides of the ball, able to step up and make plays. It could be one WR, LB or RB one week, someone else the next.

I'm actually pretty excited about the future, but unlike last year it's not because I think we have a superstar QB that can take us far. I just think we have a well-constructed, hard-playing football team.

This and several of the items on the list = Emotional Roller Coaster Rides for us = and so much rumor, inuendo, and inside sources. Much of it was divisive - polarizing. But very interesting.

Maybe people can add to the list - what stories of 2011 did I leave off the list?

Mckay J not panning out and living up to his stated hopes and excpectations.

JJ not being a captain (and I believe part of the divisiveness)

OC hanging in there (did I skim over that?)

Very entertaining season if you were able to step back and realize that most everyone had hopes and dreams way above the talent level of this team. IF you were able to lower those expectations, hope for the best but expect some flaws along the way, it was a blast.

Heaps leaving, while not ideal, almost gives the season a sense of closure. It tied up a lot of loose ends that BYU won't have to deal with next year. It also opens the door for someone else to surprise and excel in the new Doman/Bronco system which I think will be much more efficient in year 2.

A couple things I learned this year. First, never hang all hopes and dreams on one member of the football team. Second, Never put any trust in the stars system. Third, never believe the media or what is written on any forum about how good/bad a particular player is. Instead I'll just wait until I see results on the field to decide how much talent a player has.

The problem is that this season was supposed to be an escape. All of the calendar year 2011 was filled with one sour story after another.

With real football taking place, it was all supposed to stop. But it didn't.

The nastiness of this round of realignment and the Penn State scandal to top that kept the dark cloud over college football.
