Boise State Expansion almost a Done Deal?

From this week:

"The Mountain West has considered expanding to 10 or 12 teams and having a conference championship game in football. [Utah AD Chris] Hill didn't name favorites but acknowledged the most obvious contender for expansion is Boise State."

Interesting.

I see the rationale behind it for football, but does having BSU in the conference do anything for the other sports? I guess it does because with BSU the MWC has a better shot at becoming a BCS conference (can't beat 'em join 'em), which would give the schools/conference more money to spread around and the other sports would benefit from the money.

Didn't they finish AHEAD OF US in the last overall sports rankings we pride ourselves in so much?

The real question, in my mind, is who do we invite in a +3 along with Boise State? Tulsa? Houston? Fresno State? Nevada? And what would the alignment be? As of today, right now, I'd go after Houston. I know the Utes love recruiting there, and that is a nice market to add. Other team is up for grabs. FSU?

I also think Houston, Fresno St. and BSU make the most sense if they expand to 12.

Add BSU, Tulsa, and Hawaii.

Add BSU to get the autobid for the BCS.

Add Tulsa for same reason as above, plus you add a recruiting market in Oklahoma, plus spill over into Texas. Adds more of a travel partner arangement for TCU. I think Tulsa would be more competitive than Houston, SMU, or Rice but still gets you some Texas exposure.

Add Hawaii purely for the 7th home game you can get in the years you play in Hawaii. Who doesn't want to watch more BYU football? 13 regular season games plus conference championship game plus bowl game = Happy BYU fans! Additionally, Hawaii is not going to ever be the team they were in the 80's and 90's. Back then they kept some of the Hawaii recruits that BYU and Utah didn't get. Now the Pac 10 is all over the Hawaii recruiting and there aren't that many good players who stay home to play football, so Hawaii will not be that dangerous of a team to play as they were in the past.

If you travel to Hawaii to play, the NCAA lets you play 13 to help you make up travel $$.

The MWC will not expand unless they are as sure as they can possibly be that the expansion will get them the autobid to the BCS. Having 4 top 25 teams (counting BSU) should put us in higher standing than the Big East and the ACC possibly.

BSU has 13 games this year because they play at Hawaii. That was their excuse for playing UC Davis since they needed a 13th game.

I cringe a little when I hear about expanding to more than two teams. The WAC expansion was a disaster!!!! In my opinion, the 12 team conference only makes money if their a BC$ conference. Until the MWC is a BC$ conference I say add only Boise. Add other teams if the MWC becomes a BC$ conference.

The WAC made the jump from 10 straight to 16.

The WAC or the MWC have never tried 11 or 12 before.

Personally, I really like the Big Ten model, with 11 schools and 8 conference games. That way we could play a season without facing TCU! ;)

Boise State is a no-brainer, IMO, and Fresno State is almost there as well...

I'm also against any expansion east of the Mountain time zone.

Hawaii is a bad idea, I've never liked, and still don't. Games over there start after everybody has gone to bed on the mainland, so nobody sees the game (kind of like the Mtn). And it's a trap game, the islanders get all juiced up on something and want to kill everybody they play. They are rarely a really good football team, most of the good recruits from the islands go to the mainland to play, and kids from the mainland don't want to go that far from home, plus they know nobody will ever see them play. Hawaii is a black hole, we should not go there.

Tulsa, Houston, Boise and Fresno, those all work for me.

Your West division would be murder come basketball season, but your divisions would be a good breakdown for football.

I would still take Houston over Nevada. Houston my be a central time zone team, but so is TCU. And I like pairing Texas schools for hoops travel.

Your West division would be murder come basketball season, but your divisions would be a good breakdown for football.

I like this too... I think there should be at least 2 "upper level" schools in each division.... Otherwise if you put BSU, Utah and BYU in one and TCU in the other... you get one brutal take each other out division and the other is a cake walk.

I would do Tulsa/Houston over UNR simply to given TCU added incentive to stick around. If the PAC-10 or Big Least ever expand, the domino effect could put TCU in the Big XII. A travel partner could go a long ways to making them more comfy in the MWC with a natural rivalry (but not someone like SMU who would drag down the whole conference in all sports).

Houston's basketball team has become decent recently. No NCAA tournament appearances since 1992, but 20+ wins three of the last five years. And certainly Rose should enjoy playing his alma mater.

The biggest thing that makes me cringe about Houston though, is having red cougars in the conference.

How do 12-team conferences like the SEC, ACC, Big XII, and C-USA do men's basketball season? I really don't know how divisions apply to that sport.

Right now, with 9 teams you play 8 opponents twice each for 16 games.

With 12 teams, 11 opponents twice each means 22 games (6 more).

With 12 teams, 5 in-division opponents at twice each (10) and 6 out-of-division opponents at once each (+6) means 16 games (no change).

You're right though, the West team with the best record would have an awesome RPI.
