jvquarterbackSo I am really in favor of an 8 team playoff but I know it won't happen so here is my alternative: The Hawaii Football Invitational.
The Hawaii rule allows for a thirteenth game if it is sponsored by a team in Hawaii, Alaska or Puerto Rico. You don't actually have to play UH. For all of the teams that don't make or don't have a conference championship you could invite the two highest rated teams (this year Alabama and Stanford) to play a game as part of the UH football invitational tournament. Pay them each 4 million (which is more than their take home would be if they lose out on a BCS game). Winner gets to say they belong in the BCS title game and the loser is still likely to get to the BCS.
Another part of the Hawaii invitational could be to invite two teams that would not be eligible for a BCS at-large bid unless they move up in the BCS rankings (like TCU and Michigan this year). The winner of that game would BCS eligible. Pay those teams 2 million each to come out to Hawaii for a chance to become BCS eligible.
As a third part of the invitational they could have Hawaii play BYU (or someone else) on Friday night.
Sell a ticket three pack so you can't buy tickets to the best games without buying tickets to all three. Have it run at the same time as a basketball invitational so you will have college fans there who are more willing to buy tickets. Maybe you can line up a major convention to end the day before in Honolulu as well.
The reason this would work is because there is a ton of money to be made by the schools and whatever network picks up the games.
We aren't going to get a tournament any time soon but I think this sort of play-in type game for a shot at the national title or even just a BCS berth would be a huge step in the right direction.
