Southern Miss vs. Houston

USM currently leads 28-21. A remarkably good game.



Who are you rooting for?

Gotta root for Houston. Always want a non-AQ team making the BCS and I can still say "Go Cougars" and my son will repeat it.

How irrational is it that I'm rooting for Houston so that 20-30 ranking range can open up for BYU, even though I know BYU is totally undeserving of a top-25 ranking?



Funny thing is. even if USM loses, I already think a lot more of them.

Anything to create problems for the BCS. I wish BSU was undefeated too. And BYU too. Wouldn't that have made for an interesting BCS Buster discussion.

I'll tell you what, this is a heck of a lot more entertaining than the LSU-Bama game.

Wheels coming off for Houston. Don't see how they can come back from this.

I'm pulling for Houston, but only because I don't want to end this season watching my Cougars get drubbed by red cougars in the Armed Forces Bowl.

So will BYU end up playing Houston in the armed forces bowl if Houston loses today? I hope so that game would be fun to watch!

Aren't you the big "BYU's secondary is woefully underrated" guy? I agree, though - Houston's WR corps is loaded with speed. Don't think it's a great matchup. On the other hand, I think their coach may be gone by the time they play.



BYU could close the season facing the Red Cougars and open next year playing the other Red Cougars.

So, looks like we're gonna have a red vs. blue Cougar Bowl.

It is really unclear how this shakes out. I heard AF Bowl gets 3rd choice. That would seem to point at Tulsa - but it is 3rd choice - not necessarily 3rd choice. So - a Texas Bowl will likely grab a texas team - maybe Houston maybe home team SMU.



I think it is up in the air but very interesting.

I'm glad that Southern Miss is winning this game. I want the best opponent against BYU in our bowl. If Houston won this game, BYU would not get one of these two teams in our bowl. Southern miss wins we probably get Houston in our bowl. I don't think that either of these teams are as good as TCU and BYU has improved a lot since TCU. I think we could beat either of them. Looks like we would have a tougher time with Southern Miss though, they have a very good defense.

I thought AF Bowl was C-USA #2. That's why Tulsa seemed like a sure shot these last two weeks - Houston would get the BCS bid, USM would get the #1, and Tulsa got the #2. Could be wrong, though.

Green wrubell said in a tweet wondering the same thing that AF bowl gets 3rd choice in CUSA doesn't necessarily mean 3rd place team though but typically does, so probably still Tulsa I'm guessing.

Looked this up. Greg W. was asked a few hours ago, "If Houston were to lose this game would they end up in the armed forces bowl?"



Greg responded:

That's what I would assume, but after the league champ gets sent to the Liberty Bowl, there is no set bowl selection order in CUSA.

So I would guess it comes down to which bowl wants which teams.



C-USA's tie-ins are:



Liberty Bowl (like Greg said, goes to USM)

TicketCity Bowl (Dallas, Texas - Purdue is projected opponent)

AF Bowl (Forth Worth, Texas - us)

Hawaii Bowl (Hawaii - opponent will likely be Nevada if we win, Hawaii if we lose)

Beef O Brady Bowl (Florida - either a BE or MAC team, probably)

New Orleans (Sun Belt team)



I don't know about the payouts.



It seems like the better teams gravitate to the sexier match-ups. Unless Houston gets a beneficial break of a tie-in, either by being taken by someone else or one of the aforementioned bowls taking someone else, it comes down to who's a better match-up - a 6-6 Purdue or us.

FIU has accepted an invite to the Beef O Brady's Bowl. So that's probably out of the picture for Houston.
