If I had a conference...

Taking full risk that this thread will get the venom and ire of everyone that has had their limit of conference discussion (I am pretty sure that is everyone here so I am fully expecting the rotten tomatoes to fly), there is a marketing direction that I am surprised has not come up, at least not publicly. Now I fully realize that this is an overly simplistic concept and has some built in problems but could be very doable just the same.

The Big East and probably the Big 12 both choked on their own pride and greed because they wanted to negotiate and share in BYU's TV revenue. Nothing new there, because that is pretty much SOP for conferences. But what doesn't seem to have happened is any out-of-the-box thinking combined with some aggressive marketing.

If I had a conference that was not a top three and didn't have my own TV network, I would invite BYU to join and give them everything that they currently enjoy as far as TV rights and revenue. BY doing so I have lost nothing that I didn't already have. As part of my negotiation I would ask that BYUTV pick up all conference games that would not otherwise be broadcast (ala, WCC tournament, Oregon State, etc.). This would create additional revenue and marketing potential that I did not have before and give me an instant TV network without the cost and hassle. How many conferences can guarantee their members TV coverage or at least have a third tier back up? That is a lot of potential revenue, not to mention the PR bump and swagger gained within the conference.

Like I said, this is an oversimplification but it could still be done and be a win/win/win for everyone involved.

A couple of issues. KBYU is a non profit and so there is a limit on how much it can make. Also one channel could not cover that many games and it gets away from its mission. On the other hand there is the capability to broadcast several channels at one time. IF they added channels and could get the cable and dish companies to pick it up then there is that chance. Maybe they could be for profit too. They might need to add another HD truck or two to cover the games.

There's no limit on how much it can make--the limits are on how it makes the money and how it spends it.

how they earn it limits what they can earn. It will never earn $20 million.

So couldn't a not for profit be setup between the schools in the conference so that if there was a larger profit it just went back into the broadcasting capabilities of he station, improve the broadcasting infrastructures at the schools and improve the schools overall? Not sure how the regulations work, but it seems like a lot of not for profits make a lot of money and have no problem spending it. If I recall, aren't all of the bowl games not for profit?

I don't know why BYU would pick up other games for free, as you suggest, just to be part of the conference.

Who said anything about free? That is the whole point, there is money to be made by all that is currently being left on the table.

As to the channel question: This not as big of a deal as it once was. BYU has three active channels and who knows how many that are being held in reserve for future use. Also there are generally local stations that are more than happy to benefit from broadcasting a local game but just don't have the means to produce it.

But you need to have trucks to roll and crews to call the games. It could be done, but big investment and risk. And may not fit mission or purpose and create a distraction for resources you would want to keep focused.

If I had a $ for every conference realignment idea.... Never mind

If I had a song, I'd sing it in the morning, I would sing it in the evening, all over this land, I'd sing about Fairness, I'd sing about playoffs, I'd sing about love between my brothers and my sisters - Awllllllllll over this land.

I have to imagine that many to most (bcs conf) games not shown nationally are still shown locally provided there is no blackout because of non-sellout. So the games may already be getting produced but just not shown nationally so maybe a deal picking them up could be reached. It may only be a matter of simulcast in non-local markets like what ESPN does with most games.

There is one problem with your opening statement however, TV rights didn't play an adverse role in B12 talks because there never were any talks. BYU was notified that the B12 was interested and then nothing ever happened. All the BYU/B12 rumors were just that, rumors (and sources).
