Hawaii distractions

I have what is probably a stupid question. I am reading the inevitable articles about BYU being focused on the game, not a vacation. But Hans Olson said that the team usually visits Pearl Harbor and the polynesian center, along with some beach time and some free time, on the Thursday and Friday before the game. Sure, the plane ride is a little longer than our trip to say, Ole Miss, and traveling three time zones (especially west) can take some acclimation, but do we really need to fly out on Wednesday? Here's my question: why not fly out early Friday (no, Crowton, not the day of the game) and treat this like any other road game, then stick around longer than usual and visit the sites and the beach on Sunday/Monday and fly home Tuesday? I would think that it would be easier to focus on the game without missing out on the fun stuff the trip has to offer.

Agreed. No need to do all that stuff before the game.

EVERY American should go see Pearl Harbor. There is NO reason for any American to not go there when they're in Hawaii.

Very few places I have visited have the spirit of reverence and importance that Pearl Harbor does.

In a similar vein, I was in DC this week. We only had one free evening so we prioritized what we would/should see. So we went and saw the Lincoln Memorial. That is another MUST see place for every American. Very similar to Pearl Harbor. On two of the walls are the Gettysburg Address and his 2nd Inaugural Address (given just days before his assassination) and reading those two short speeches in that setting was very special.

I went to DC last year on the 4th of July for business, and I made a point to have a free evening where I was well rested and able to go over to the Lincoln Memorial at night. The crowds were sparse, and it was just a special moment to be able to be there at the memorial and visit the other special monuments.

Several years ago I was on a business trip to the DC area. Took an evening to go the memorial and I think I ended up spending a good 4 hours there.

I absolutely love the WWII monument at night with the lights on. The Korean War Memorial is pretty cool as well.

Agreed. But also make a point to go to the National Archives to pay your respects to the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. Powerfully moving for me.

Of all the memorials in DC my favorite was actually the capital. That building is amazing. the Jefferson memorial is great as well.



White house was underwhelming.

Some distractions can be motivating: One year the swim coach took us the night before the WAC conference meet to see a new movie that he thought would put us in the right mind frame to compete.

There can be time-wasting distractions. I don't consider going to Pearl Harbor to be one of them.

I think the point is that they can go see those things on Monday and Tuesday as easily as Thursday and Friday.

The problem is that the Admin can come up with all kinds of rationale for arriving early - but nobody has come up with a good excuse to stay later.

I agree with cougdoc and jvquarterback. Things like this can set players mindset on distractions during the game, even if it is Pearl Harbor.
