Tanner Mangum Rated Better Than Jake Heaps

Rivals gave both 4 stars, but gave Mangum a raw score of 6.0, where Heaps scored a 5.9

Barkley, Gabbert, Luck, Mallet, Clausen, Brantley, Stafford all were 6.0 of higher.





I am just tired of the Heaps/Nelson thing, so I'm just trying to start some other debate.

I noticed that some of the services upgraded Mangum in the last few days. I found that odd, considering that EHS got upset pretty bad in the Idaho championship game.

Is he going to be in camp for next spring? We need him to take over for 2012 ;)

Hawkwing, I know you were kidding but can we just get this on the record now.



College senior Mangum may be better than college senior Heaps, Nelson, Lark or Munns, but true freshman Mangum will likely NOT be better than any QB on BYU's roster next year.



This news is something to get excited about for 2014 or later.

To the right side of Heap's page are some links to "Similar Quarterbacks". I looked up stats for Oregon's and Notre Dame's QB "Similar" recruits from 2009. Both redshirted, so they are freshman. I don't think Notre Dame's QB has played yet and Oregon's Bennett has played in 3 or 4 games in mop up duty.



You wonder where Heaps would be now if he had redshirted in '10 and been the back-up in '11 like most of his "Similar" peers.



Let's not make that same mistake with Mangum!

Yes, last I read Tanner is straight on mission. He could be another munns. I'm not getting my hopes up, although I'd love to see him do well as he's from IDAHO!

He would be a much better QB and we would have him as a Redshirt sophomore starting next season (Riley would be graduating). The fact that the offensive coaches didn't have the nads to stand up to the BYU fan base/media and Heaps(family) is going to cost us a year of him being an effective QB instead of a qb working to find his confidence.

Jake or Riley starts next year. Those two dominate the time. Mangum gets time later.

I saw Mangum play a few games and I am impressed. He is much more mobile than Heaps. He has very good arm strength. VERY GOOD. He is taller than Heaps. Chris Peterson wanted him BADLY. I am glad he is coming to BYU. The worst thing though is if you guys get your expectations out of whack. Mangum like many good QBs will need time and experience. He will not come in from day one and lead us to the promised land. Crap even Kellen Moore was redshirted a year before BSU let him on the field.....So go easy on the hype and be glad that we have a very good QB coming our way. A very good one.

If both of these QBs underperform and leave without breaking Max or John type records, I'm going to go ahead and decide QB coaching change is needed. How are Frosh going into BcS schools and dominating, or sophomores winning Heisman's? C'mon Detmer!

Tanner is looking good. He's looking awful good. Although he did throw 4 interceptions in his last game, compared with only 2 touchdowns. But hey, you win some and you lose some.

You are forgetting that nelson was not very good and they wanted to win at the moment.

Other then the fact that it took Heaps about 5 games as a starter to equal Nelson's touchdown total for the year last year. If BYU had prepared Nelson from day 1 to be the starter (after spring ball), and hadn't tried to change the entire offense for him (to make our offense into a running qb offense, thank you Anae). We would have won more games last year and Nelson probably wouldn't have been hurt on a freak play in fall practice (starting qb's don't get to take off the green jersey for the fun of it in scrimmages). Nelson was the better qb last year in the WA game, it wasn't even close.

hindsight is 20 20. I agree the coaches crewed things up.

Great, if Heaps redshirts for a year and then plays two Mangum will come in right at Heaps exit.

Such a simple truth, yet so hard for some to accept, even after Heaps struggled the way he did last year.
