Recap of Tom Holmoe on Bronco's show

Well, from what I heard on Bronco's show, the talks from the Big 12 never started. He said that the Big 12 contacted them with interest and then invited someone else without ever even starting talks.

He said that the BE actually had serious negotiations with BYU but the talks broke down. He did not say that BYUtv was the reason of the break down but said that the TV deal was part of the talks. He did say that the talks came to an impasse and BYU was not able to make a deal with them. Said that the talks were never disrespectful on either side and reports of such disrespect is not true.

I would recommend to everyone that didn't hear the coaches show to get on ksl.com tomorrow when it's posted and listen to it. No offense to anyone, but I have yet to see a blog, write-up, etc that matches hearing it from Holmoe and Bronco themselves.

you're an insider if you know what Holmoe wants, therefore you must be lying therefore i cannot go listen.

I just read the KSL summary of what he said and it was so much mumbo jumbo that for me he basically said absolutely nothing.

He seemed to indicate that although at impasse, it is not dead with Beast. Reading between the lines, it did sound like BYU took a strong stance when pressured to move quickly - but may take a softer stance having now had more time to evaluate it.

Or maybe heis just hinting that a year from now when TV rights for BEAST WEST get renegotiated - maybe then when more is known.

In other words - nothing seemed clearer to me after reading it than before I read it. Mumbo Jumbo. Coach Speak.

This is absolutely true and it is up now. Bronco and TH. Very interesting.

You can listen at http://www.ksl.com/index.php?sid=18277187&nid=498&title=cougar-tracks-byu-ad-holmoe-on-big-east-there-were-some-uncertainties" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I actually thought it was enlightening, although there is still some reading between the lines. He talked about the negotiations proceeding and the impasse was over uncertainties. My guess is AQ status and TV deal were the uncertainties. BYU has already been burned by a great TV deal concept, that turned out terrible. I think they wanted to see the Big East's new TV deal in writing before they gave up what they have. So if the Big East gets that nailed down then BYU could still make the move.

TH and Bronco sounded really optimistic about future scheduling. At one point TH talked about taking scheduling ideas to Bronco and Bronco shooting them down as too ambitious, so it sounds like it should improve.

Bronco also put the hammer down on up start schools thinking they can get 2 for 1's with BYU. But Bronco really talked up independence and sounded enthusiastic about the future schedule, although they didn't announce anything at this time.

re schedule - they did announce that 2012 is done in principle but 1 last contract needs to be finalized. That is likely WSU according to rumor - they did not say who.

They indicated two more are needed for 2013 and negotiations are in progress. They did not say who.

Specifics did not sound imminent re 2013.

Here is my big issue:

BYU says that in order to join a BCS league, it needs to be on their own terms. As in, the media deal needs to be right for them. I get that this is important. MWC deal burned us, but we shouldn't overreact. Exposure is important, but should it be a deal breaker to a better schedule and BCS position?

Then, TH says that the Big XII never even got to media negotiations. I find this odd because Dave McCann kept tweeting about patience and Dick Harman wrote he thought it was going to happen. If there are two BYU insiders in the media, it is certainly these two guys. So really, what gives? Were they blowing smoke, or are we not being given the full story?

Which leaves us to Independence. If BYU is truly committed to it, and it is really going to work long term, BYU needs to be able to properly schedule for it. We all thought/claim that ESPN will help us with this, and our ESPN deal will bring teams to Provo. Except, per Bronco last night, that is not the case. Teams do not want to come to Provo to play us. Especially late in the year. Which means our Indy schedules are not going to be super strong, especially late in the year.

So where does that leave us? With great uncertainty. Which is where we would be in the Big East, except with games that matter late in the year.

Perhaps my perspective is slanted because I live in Utah and have season tickets and want great games at LES, not just ESPN Exposure. I admit as much. But I do find it problematic that BYU is basically choosing exposure for fans in far reaching places, which is leading to crappy games, over better home games and opponents in LES for the ticket buyers. It is a real issue, especially with Utah bringing in PAC-12 opponents late in the year.

If INDY scheduling does not improve, BYU needs to be willing to make concessions in terms of media.

I don't think that Dick Harmon or Dave McCann knew anymore then you or I knew about the Big 12. Harmon said as much in his article. The bottom line is, the Big 12 didn't want us very badly or the discussions would have gone further. I think the Big east negotiations broke up because it is not a good fit for us.

Independence is very unstable in my opinion. If we don't win and win a lot, more than 9 games a year utah will continue to ecclipse us and recruiting will get harder. Just being on tv is not enough. your games have to matter.

boise had a good model but it worked because they won. this indy deal is basically based on that model. a few quality games with the rest patsies. that worked for bsu becuase they were winning. it is not working for us because our coaches are not good enough to go undefeated ( my opinion).

I think byu needs to be in a conference. Independence is risky. the risk will pay off if ew win and get get some decent schedules put together. exposure doesn't matter if we are irrelevant. being in a conference makes you relevant. Winning would make up for not being in a conference but having the easiest schedule we have had in decades and still losing three games doesn't inspire confidence that we can win more than 9 games each year as an independent.

i can see not picking the big east given its situation but the big12 was a no brainer even if there was a small risk that ou and ut would bolt.

I think we might be having trouble bringing in top 25 teams for games at LES but I expect we should be able to brin in 35-top 60 teams who want to be on tv. The top teams probably already have full access to tv so why should they come. This is why we are able to get Houston, UCF and S Miss to make agreements. Decent games and better than the WAC games but not the markee games that some want to see.

I just want teams with winning records and teams people have heard of. That's all I ask.

Right, and McCann could've meant any number of things when he tweeted "BYU fans be patient." On top of that, given how tight-lipped BYU has been, I would not be surprised if McCann and Harmon were basing their comments on the same "sources" we were reading at the time.

There are probably a fair number of people who suspect Holmoe of lying, but thinking back on that whole period I can't think of a source reliable enough that I'd take their word over his.

I'm really worried about the long-term feasibility of independence, but I'm concerned that, because we BELIEVED for a while that the Big XII was an option, that's going to be the standard we judge it against.

First off, I do not think TH lied at all. Just think the full picture has not yet been given. Nor will it be.

As to Harman, the guy has sources in the program. Sources that pass him info all the time. I think he based him opinion off of info he was given. Then things changed. And changed again. When TH spoke before the Oregon State game, he said they change by the day. Point being, Harman had a basis for his info. I think McCann is the same. HE works on the freaking set of BYUtv weekly. HE knows things. And then those things change. And then again.

Point being, combine the Oregon State comments with last nights.

I understand that BYU has invested $100 million in its new broadcasting center and BYUtv. I know this was not done solely for FB purposes, still given the problems we experienced with the MWC and the MTN, it is not surprising one bit to me that the school and the BOT would be cautious and careful before giving up utliziation of and access to what BYUtv brings to the school and the church. I have a lot more confidence in their collective decisionmaking than some of the posters I have been reading. I know we all have wants--we want this certain team to play in Provo and we want that certain game in November to be meaningful, but it is not hard to understand BYU's reticence to relegate that type of investment to a league that is geographically challenged at best and with a BCS card that is on life support
