Snippy and irresponsible "journalism"?

It seems like this 'quote' is overly snippy and irresponsible for a journalist. But what do I know? I guess it's easy to bash someone else when you know they wont comment back.

“I doubt BYU will happen,” a college football industry source told CBSSports.com. “They are being extremely unreasonable all of a sudden. This is one reason why they did not get into the Big 12. Their general counsel is a piece of work.”

I can't help but wonder if that "college football industry source" is an SDSU employee.

Here's the whole article: http://brett-mcmurphy.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/29532522/33459898" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hardly irresponsible, but maybe snippy (whatever that means). I think byu is being a little ridiculous, from everything I gather they want the benefits of independance, mainly their current tv deal, and the benefits of being in a bcs conference, bcs access and scheduling. I don't see why byu thinks they are important enough to have the best of both worlds. Texas can get away with it because they are Texas, they are huge. Byu is not huge. I just get the feeling byu thinks its more important than it really is. In the mwc we were the big dog, not anymore.

Doesn't sound snippy to me at all. That's how BYU is and certainly how we come across to others.

As for the journalism part, technically, it's a blog so the same standard of journalism isn't applied even though the author may be a certified, card carrying journalist. Blogs by news outlets are more column/opinion like than news story like.

BYU has an over inflated view of itself (aka pride).

it sounds like BYU wants something that not even Texas or Florida or USC or ANY other team in a conference gets - home TV rights. If its about REBROADCAST rights, then I get that. But if BYU really thinks that the Big East would allow them to keep their own TV rights to home games...well, lets just say that they are just trying to kill the deal while making it look like they were trying to make it work.

Maybe joining the big east isn't a very good idea. I was for it in the beginning. Now, I'm not so sure if AQ status goes out the window.

Exactly. We're holding to our broadcasting hopes with the thought to promote the BYU brand and all that seems to be happening is we're enforcing the stereotype that BYU is arrogant.

The Big East is a piece of work :P I don't think Holmoe will come out and say he is thankful for the confidentiality they experienced in negotiations with the BE like he did with the Big 12.

but the end result could easily be the same

Calling our general counsel "a piece of work" is snippy. Just because the Big East, BSU, Houston, possibly Air Force et al want BYU doesn't mean the Big East is right for BYU.

I haven't heard that BYU sought out the Big East.

Ummm

If "all of a sudden" they're being unreasonable, how does that affect what transpired months ago?

Someone needs to take a logical thinking course....

BTW, everyone's general counsel had better be a piece of work, or else they suck. The whole purpose of a general counsel is to protect the entity.

What it is is a cold shower. Perception is reality for BYU. Whether true or not, if that is the perception, that is a battle BYU has to face. considering that the MWC, Hair, SDSU, allegedly the Big XII and now the BE all think this, have have publicly said so, (except Big XII), lends some weight to the opinion.

Again... Good! We want a good general counsel. It's like buying a car, don't get to personally attached, and be prepared to walk away. SDSU is mad because we had the nerve to leavce them...the BigXII is upset that we had the audacity to walk away from a bad deal, the Big East might be as well. If in 5 or 6 years we're still playing crappy schools in November, then the criticism will be justified. Untill then it's just griping that we don't get it all our way at once.

Yeah, I don't know how you can beg someone to be the savior of your conference, offer them something crappier than what they currently have as compensation, and then throw a hissy fit when they're like, "Uhhh, no. We'll stick with what we've got." As far as I know, we didn't apply to get in, we considered it at the behest of others.

Now, if we had applied for membership and showed up at the door with a list of demands, then yeah, that's being unreasonable. But I do not think it's unreasonable to want keep the level of money and exposure we currently have. Why should we sacrifice what we have in an attempt to save a sinking ship, especially with the BCS about to blow away the AQ lifeline? If this is their regular MO, it's no wonder the Big East is hemorrhaging teams.

Word. If the BE had any type of superior bargaining position and I mean anything other than "we are a conference" ... and even that is tenuous, then they can't complain. The BE was already the weakest of the BC$ conferences, then they got weaker. The BE has a horrible TV deal, BYU has an awesome one. The BE needs BYU more than the other way around. I do like the idea of BYU joining the BE but only because it's a cupcake conference that currently has BC$ AQ access, and even that might be going away. If the BE doesn't want BYU they can go get Tulane or similar. The bitter taste of MWC membership is still in my mouth (and I assume it's still in Holmoe's mouth), I don't see BYU joining a new conference just for the sake of being in a conference, we've done that. If BYU's pushing extra hard on the BE for a sweet deal before boarding that ship, that's fine with me. If that's being arrogant then so be it.

Having had to deal with lawyers at work in brokering contracts, I can relate.

Sometimes lawyers get in the way. They get hung up on details and "what ifs." It usually takes the wind out of the sails and an amiable situation can quickly turn into a drag as the lawyers haggle and refuse to budge.

That said, BYU is very ultralistic and once it draws a line doesn't budge. The world is black and white to BYU, and BYU isn't one to give or compromise. In many scenarios, this is a good thing. In many other scenarios, it's a bad thing.

This whole thing has the making of a great political cartoon.

picture a bunch of mad people standing in a sinking ship pointing at someone who represents BYU calling us unreasonable as the ship named "BCS access" slowly goes down.

How many Rutger's games were national this year? Or better yet, how many Big East games were national this past year? If all our games are national do you think the church/BYU would care if they "lost" $10 million a year? It is about exposure not money. They couldn't care less about anything but exposure. AQ only means BCS which means more exposure. They understand they must have a great product but money is no goal. Can you think of a better deal than what they have if the goal is exposure to help with the missionary effort? BYU is not being unreasonable and they are sure not being dumb. Big Least has almost nothing to offer and the only thing they do offer (that BYU wants) that we don't have is AQ status. Continue to have huge tv ratings and the BCS will eventually come calling. And there is no guarantee that the Big least keeps their AQ status. I bet they lose it. Right now with Pitt, Syracuse, and WV they (BCS coalition) have 63 which is just over half the total. They maintain majority and that is what matters, so I predict that when the dust settles the Big Least will not be a BCS conference.

BTW we are in year one of being indy. Should we jump at the first offers given in the first year of indy? I say stay indy until it makes sense and let those who don't really understand whats going on sit and stew or spin in this case.

And the guy that wrote it is a hater plain and simple. Complete and bogus journalism which I guess is the new standard in journalism today.

I just read a tweet that stated that BYU and BE left on good terms. Some universities might not be too happy with BYU, but neither would you if the prom queen (BYU right now) jilted you.

"journalism" much like "college sports" has degraded past the morals of yester-year. Rivalries are dead. Conferences are making money grabs.

and journalism is all about generating buzz, controversy, and eyeballs. (see also Gordon monson)

This fits right in.

Sensationalist? Yes. Irresponsible? No.

The story was double-sourced, and it you're a reporter and you get a juicy quote like that , you're going to run it. I'm more concerned about the douche-baggery of the Big East folks who make those kinds of comments about a specific person but refuse to let the reporter disclose their own name.
