Confident vs Arrogant

Simple. As you look back at this years team what vibe did you get? I ask because I've heard that a lot of people were turned off by the NC talk at the beginning of the year by players and coaches. But I've heard another faction say that the team is lacking confidence.

The arrogance led the team, coming off a successful run at the end of last year and bringing back almost everyone, to take it easy over the summer.

The arrogance led the coaches to over-evaluate the team's preparation and readiness and took it easy on the team, giving them multiple days off and limiting live reps.

When things came crashing to life, the arrogance led to emptiness and a crash in confidence ensued.

Arrogance. It's a problem BYU routinely has. That's why I hope BYU isn't ranked in the 25 when we close out the season. BYU plays better when it feels like it has something to prove.

The success towards the end of last season got to these kids' heads. They spent the summer throwing the pig skin around, got confident, and made promises they couldn't keep.

I don't mind confidence as long as it paired with humility and perspective. I want them playing with confidence, but with a chip on their shoulder as if they've got something to prove to the world and not as though they already are the best thing since sliced bread.

We need more confidence. We may be arrogant, but right now, it doesnt' seem too big a problem. Bronco probably will be able to keep these kids humble enough, while playing with enough confidence. Also, having a chip on your shoulder is usually caused from overestimation, not lack of confidence. If you have a chip on your shoulder, it doesn't always mean you're confident.

True. But last thing we need is a player confident in his ability but apathetic too to proving himself.

I look at BSU as an example. Team full of "lesser" recruits but able to perform at the highest level. They're confident in their abilities, gameplan, and teammates and eager to prove they can run with anybody in the nation.

I get your point. It makes boatloads of sense.

Were the stripling warriors arrogant or confident?

Did the Stripling Warriors always attack according to their pre-war plan? Or did they check down to vulnerable areas of attack as they opened up on the field of battle?

This - and it starts at the very tippy top. I am ok with football being 5th on Bronco's priority list, and minimizing contact drills to avoid injury up to a point - but here is where I disconnect.

Jake Heaps with all of his hosiery and rib pads and playing style is playing to not get hurt instead of making plays. Riley tried to send a msg in 2010 by taking off the green shirt in fall camp - claims it didn't cause his injury - but IDK. But the Riley injury and now this year another Riley

injury - somehow even with that backdrop - Jake needs to extend plays like he did stepping up in the pocket on the throw late in the game.

Basically wrapping up practice early after declaring everyone prepared. Huge miscalculation. Ending daily practices early. Fine if they are ready to play. We were not. Maybe Bronco does not want to put in the time and is arrogant enough to think the Lord will bless us with wins for putting football fifth. But the Lord has not - maybe the Lord wants to test our resolve about the priority of football and trade-off a few losses for FHE time. But if you slack off - quit talking about playing at the highest levels on the biggest platforms.

This very week, the team is going to take more time off than most. We already get Sunday off. OK - let the kids eat some turkey on TG Day with their families - sheesh - it is a bye week. But Friday? Want to avoid injury? Film? Prep for UH specifically.

And are we to arrogant to show a little emotion. UH will bring whatever emotion they can possibly bring. They will overachieve Saturday, Dec 3. BYU will underachieve. Hopefully we won't give away the entire margin - because on paper we are a better team.

Honolulu Advertiser has an interesting summary of the UH loss to Fresno State. Hopefully BYU and fans do not get lulled to sleep. UH starting QB out for the season. 2QBs battled to replace him. One had flu symptoms, so the other got the start. At 17-0 FSU, the QB with the flu took over. 21 unanswered points later, UH took the lead. A running into the punter call and a 10 minute delay about what to do with that and a 2nd penalty called on that play that one official mistakenly thought was on FSU and ruled offsetting - then FSU coach went nuts - ref realized mistake - reversed bad call - took forever explaining to both coaches and the crowd - momentum, meanwhile shifted back to FSU who retained possession and eventually scored the winning TD. UH defender in position to intercept that winning TD pass has it go through his hands for a FSU catch and TD. Then UH drops a pass that would have been a score and eventually runs out of time trying to get in field goal range to tie it.

How arrogant will BYU be in their preparation and travel. UH is worn down, but after their defense gave up huge passing plays and the quick 17-0 lead, switching to Cover 2 and making FSU try to run the ball slowed FSU right down, and switching QBs sparked the UH offense and gave them a chance to win. The new QB will likely gain confidence Vs Tulane this week. If UH beats Tulane as expected they could still be in the Bowl hunt and the BYU game will be huge for them.

It is huge for BYU unless 8-5 is a satisfying season. I hope Riley recovers - not holding my breath - hopefully he is not holding his - literally. If Jake gets to go, I hope he plays like he has never played before and extends plays the entire game and takes the fight out of UH - like the running into the punter call and 10 minute delay of the game sorting out the penalty confusion did. UH kind of quit after that.

Definitely confident. 1-0 record. Casualty reserve: 2,000 Stripling Warriors, yet not one dead. (If you don't know what we're talking about, we're LDS.)

They took a lot of contact. No green jerseys.

Didn't they only fight once? Therefore, 1-0 (but if I am wrong and it was two battles, you're right).

Funny how their leader (Helaman/Bronco) was afraid for them to be in battle (live reps/more physical practices) that he actually tried to avoid taking them into battle. But the warriors actually asked to fight.

Acually the first battle with 2000 warriors took place in the year 64 BC (Alma 56). The 2nd battle happened the next year 63 BC, where they also received an additional 60 sons of the Ammonites to join their brothers (Alma 57:6, 19). The original 2000 became 2060. :)
