Bob Davie New Mexico Coach

Poor Lobos. The guy couldn't cut it with the best talent in the world. So now he's gotta do it with Lobo talent? I feel sorry for Davie, too. It's got to suck groveling and downgrading to coach the Lobos. Then his esteem will take a double hit when he finds out he can't coach a victory out of those losers either. And I really don't have anything against the Lobo football team. It's just a sorry situation all around.

As near as I can tell - not counting ND's new coach who is still too new to evaluate - Davies was ND's best head coach since Lou Holtz. When you go back and look at the ND schedule back in that day - you would have a difficult time finding a team that played as tough of a schedule - let alone had a winning record while doing it.



He will not have the same caliber of athletes at NM by any stretch of the imagination, but he won't have the same level of competition etiher.



Can he still coach? IDK. Ironically, UNM had a pretty good coach in Rocky Long and ran him out of town due to unrealistic expectations of fans and administrators. Same thing happened to Davies at ND - who fired him and then endured a long string of coaches who did no better or maybe even worse given that ND started to get smarter about scheduling and still did not win often enough to meet expectations.

They hired Bob Davie for his clean reputation. The school needs a strong, clean PR boost after Locksley, and Davie gives them that moral high ground as well as the name appeal that could actually convince a 3-star athlete that Albuquerque isn't all bad.

They should have stuck with Rocky Long

So CC - in your humble opinion - how well did firing Rocky Long work out for them. Note that he has resurfaced as head coach at a better school. THen look at UNM Football over a few decades before ROcky Long - sometimes you need to recognize who you are and whom you are not - and go with that and work within that framework and try to improve wherever you can.



Maybe UNM ought to build a 80,000 set stadium and maybe their fans ough tto figur eout how to fill it, and get themselves on TV before they start expecting their head coach to contend for conference championships let alone anything more than that.



Rocky Long was a sgood as they have had and better than almost anything they have had ever - Bob Davie - we will have ot wait and see. Meanwhile UNM figures out how to pay out Locksley and pay for Davie at the same time because Rocky Long was not good enough.



If Davie turns out to be better than Long, and he might, an dhe stays longer than a year or two as a stepping stone - mayb eit was all worth it in the end.



If NM surges a year or two and then Davie is gone - maybe it wasn't.

Good, get Davie off of the TV.

I think that would be a very good job considering that the Big East is stripping down the MWC and C-USA at the top. Colorado State, New Mexico, UNLV and SDSU will be at the top of the heap with BYU, Boise and Air Force, Utah, and TCU gone. One of them is going to rise to the top and be the front runner. A coach like Davie, who has experience at major programs, could do wonders for New Mexico. From what I have read, Locksley was a good recruiter but terrible head coach. There should be some players to work with.



I think the Big East should go to 12 right now (hopefully BYU admin accepts) and wait it out until the cream rises to the top of the MWCUSA leftover jumble, then add the top few in 5-10 years.

That was his claim to fame (recruiting) when he was as Illinois. Actually, he pulled a surprise or two recruiting-wise at NM. In 2009, they signed a 4/5 star near the top of the class for his position on signing day. If I remember correctly, it was one of those signings with the TV crews and the hats set out in front of him and he puts on the hat of the school he chose. It was pretty dang funny when the kid overlooked a bunch of AQ schools and put the New Mexico hat on.



I agree with the rest of your post. I don't know if anyone's going to step and be a worthy BCS buster from that group anytime soon, but someone's got to step up and rule the conference. Davie just has to get the program competitive enough to beat CSU, UNLV, Nevada, SDSU and the like. An uphill batter, but a heck of a lot easier than trying to knock off BYU, TCU, Utah and BSU.
