After practice, trainer Kevin Morris clarified a few things regarding quarterback Riley Nelson's injury. Morris said Nelson did not fracture any ribs, as was relayed by Mendenhall in Monday's news conference.

Rather, Nelson suffered a cartilage tear between his first rib and his sternum, a CT scan revealed. Morris called that "great news" because players generally can come back faster from a cartilage tear than fractured ribs.

Morris said the issues that Mendenhall brought up regarding Nelson's lungs and air travel (the negative effects of pressurization in the airplane's cabin) are real and significant.

was his lung then collapsed due to the hit alone or from the cartilege puncture? glad his ribs are otherwise intact.

I guess the Hawaii game will be more interesting now, won;t it. Starter watch will start after the NMSU game ends.

Unless Heaps sucks it up in the NMSU game. I don't anticipate that but if it did, everyone would be begging for riley's return for Hawaii.

I'm fine with Riley sitting for the Hawaii game. Nothing is on the line, really. We're already going to the Armed Forces bowl. There's no conference championship. There's no upcoming rival game. Let Heaps play. We win, great. We lose, oh well.

Riley needs to be in top shape for the bowl game and a hard hit on Hawaii's turf could cause further damage.

But he needs to show off his hair and abs on a surf board.

This injury is actually pretty painful, I sustained the same injury in high school after a fellow heavy weight wrestler belly flopped on to my chest. The site of the tear was tender but what really sucked was when I would bear down and really try to use my core muscles the muscles around my lung would spasm and knock the wind out of me for about 5 minutes. No matter what I did, I could not catch my breath. I nearly went to the hospital because I couldn't breath for 2 weeks. It didn't heal for about 5 weeks, so I say to Riley, take the time off and heal because getting hit will just re-aggravate it.

What he loses in ab def during recovery he can compensate for with a few bleach streaks in his hair. I guess those will be the only "highlights" he will be getting. ;-) Get better Riley!

Where is the good news - still might not be able to fly to Hawaii? We should put up a pool re which QB will start vs UH or playduring UH game.

RIley - maybe

Jake - maybe

Lark - maybe and especially if Jake gets injured - and Jake has a target on his chest and UH will go after it

Then UH

Starter - out for the season

Back-ups - two of them battling for the starting job as we speak - may be a game time decision this week for UH

And there are still three opportunities for another UH QB to get injured including the BYU game.

What if we have Jake start to get as much experience as possible before his redshirt year? ;)

Not sure if it's the same thing, but when I was 12 I was diving for a ball while playing soccer, and another kid kicked me in the chest right about at the sternum, I apparently tore some cartlidge, never got anything fixed with it, and still have a bump in the middle of my chest, I call it my 3rd nipple. It didn't take very long to recover from the pain.

So if he can't fly in a plane why don't we send him over on a boat. There's plenty of time and he could rehab over there! lol

Team trainer joked that he has already offered to take a cruise with Riley.

Funny how RN rib crack is downgraded to a gentle tear. Had that been JH, he'd of been out for year.

Perfect! Didn't someone use Google for directions on how to get to Hawaii and it said to take a kayak!

LAME!!! Hmmm lets see; Jake breaks some ribs and still plays the next week. RN has a "gentle tear", spends two nights in the hospital and now is making cameo appearances at practice but cant play??? Sad thing is, this has nothing to do with Riley and everything to do with you being a putz.

To be fair, Riley did have a partially collapsed lung, and Jake didn't. That is the bigger health risk.

like Kfilly20 or not, he's right. Jake did play through broken ribs end of last year. Kind of disproves the "out for the year" quip.

facts hurt. A lot like a collapsed lung.
