USU goes down to Weber: Let Down Much?

Just saw that USU just got dropped by Weber State. Can you say let down?

I guess that'll happen when your 1st game of the year is also the year's biggest.



On the other hand, if we beat Weber ...

I'm surprised, but only modestly surprised. USU always plays better at the Spectrum, they probably had a bit of a hangover (metaphorically, of course) from the BYU game, and a fair number of people have been predicting Weber will make a fair amount of noise this year.



That, and BYU-USU was a game between two teams who are going to take some time to establish an identity. I think both have better ball ahead of them.

Not surprised. BYU and USU had lost a lot of their playmakers coming into this year. I dno't know much about Weber, but if they had returned a lot of experience I think that made the difference.

I'd be willing to bet most of them had a literal hangover the day after the victory, as well ;)

This just PO's me to no end to have a team lay everything on the line to win a game against BYU and then you don't have to cajones to man up and continue to play at that level like you deserved that win. The result is to further harm BYU by now lowering their strength of schedule. Bravo to them to beat BYU, but come on guys, don't set your lives on just having to beat BYU like that is all there is to life and then falling apart.

A young and/or inexperienced team on the road lose quite often. BYU beats USU in Provo and probably on a neutral floor as well.



The teams (USU & BYU) are pretty evenly matched.

This - and neither looked very good when we played. Both are capable of losing at Weber State.



If BYU wins its games, it will all work ut just fine. BYU and USU will both improve as the season progresses.

Straight up. USU students don't camp out for a game against Utah. They are probably more obsessed with BYU than even the ewets. It's a shame nobody in Provo really cares.

Weber is a decent program with a pretty good coach and experience. They usually beat in-state teams at home (they even have a good home record against BYU).

Maybe in the 90s when BYU BB was a cluster [truck] and WSU had Arbegglen (sp?) and Arceneaux (Sp??). But it's been almost a decade since WSU beat BYU anywhere and never since Rose took over (although they did take us to OT in 2006).



Maybe they're better this year than I'm giving them credit for, but I think if USU had played them any game other than right after BYU, they wouldn't have had the massive letdown (down 15 at HALFTIME), and wouldn't have lost.

I have heard some people say that WSU was the best team in the state (before they beat USU). I guess they are older and more experienced.

Damn RMs.

USU likes to do this to us every year. They manage to pull off a win against a BYU team, and then go and lose to someone AWFUL the very next week. Losing to USU isn't enough. They manage to make the loss even worse by lowering their RPI and the respectability of our loss to them.

Whatever USU does against BYU, the do the opposite the next game:

2011-12: USU 69 BYU 62. Next game: USU 63 Weber St 73

2010-11: USU 72 BYU 78. Next game: USU 66 Southern Utah 53

2009-10: USU 71 BYU 61. Next game: USU 63 St Mary's 68

2008-09: USU 63 BYU 68. Next game: USU 69 Utah Valley 50

This was USU's biggest game of year. Students camped outside more than a week in advance for tickets.



This was just BYU's first game of the year.

It looks more to be a function of WHO they played after BYU. Some years they play a good team and lose and other years a very weak team and win. Probably also a pattern of play us at home then someone else on the road or vice versa.



Don't omit key data. Add RPI of opponents and home vs away data and it may not seem like Angels are favoring USU over BYU or that there is some conspiracy.



Plus - this year we are not very good yet. They are not either - but it was at their house.







Other than the Jimmer years, doesn't USU own us in Logan?

It's hard to say whether Weber State is a good team this year since they've only played a couple of games, but over the last 4 years they've finished the season with RPI ranks of (195, 107, 85, 148). If they're close to that this year, that's a bad loss, even on the road.



The 2009 loss to St Mary's I think is more telling. BYU finished the year ranked higher than both USU and SMC. USU finished the season ranked higher than SMC. Both games were in Logan, during the semester (no change in student attendance) and USU went from beating a higher ranked team by 10 to losing to a lower ranked team (again, at home) by 5. The game was late enough in the season to not be an early season fluke and, as in the WSU this year, USU let SMC get a large 1st half lead, then rallied in the 2nd half, and then dropped it down the stretch.



USU didn't lose any other home games that year, just the one right after they played us.
