Deseret News says the Big East offer is official

BYU hasn't accepted yet though.

Yeah, I picked it up off of Harmon's Twitter so I thought it was him. Reread the author and changed it to "Deseret News".

Saw that, and it seems like the feeling from reports is that these guys really want us... I mean it's nice to be wanted, I'm sort of flattered... :P but I still don't how I feel about the whole thing. And don't want to get as emotionally invested into this until we actually join. Although it's fun to at least see how things are being broken down.

After practice Tuesday night, BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said he hadn't heard anything new about his team jumping to the Big East. Asked if it's something he would like to see happen, he replied,



"Hard to say. I don't know enough details. We're just finishing year one (of independence). It's hard to know, No. 1, who's in the Big East and what the small and fine print is. So I'd rather not say until I know all of the details, if that even is an opportunity."

Sounds almost like the interest/reception we got from the WCC.

Good move. Not a perfect fit, but it's probably better than independence since it sounds like BYU is being allowed to call its own shots in this deal (especially tv-related demands).

I like the idea of being in a conference that not only has a BCS affiliation, but also has a conference championship game. Boise will be our only competition in the western division, which means we will have a lot to play for towards the end of the season. Hopefully they become our new rival, change the smurf turf, and we get to play them the last game of the season.



We will also travel to Texas and Florida most seasons. Hopefully we can play some non-conference games on the west coast which will help us reap all the scheduling/recruiting benefits of Independence.



This is a win win IF the conference keeps their auto bid and can gain some stability.

BSU would probably be our main competition. I think SMU's definitely on the rise, though. Houston lives and dies by who they have in at QB.



It's gonna be pretty hilarious if BSU, Houston, BYU and SMU are in the same division. That's four teams that regularly place in the top 25 passing offenses year in and year out (BYU's recent struggles notwithstanding). Tossing in throwback option team AFA just makes it funnier.

BYU to big east, if reports are correct, is basically like having all the benefits of independence without the drwaback. drawback were scheduling, bowls, and no conf championship, and no bcs access. get all of those with big east.



benefits of indy was: espn contract (exposure and money), playing all over country. get to keep both of these.



we still get 5 occ games and espn helping us fill them with big games. this would be a no brainer even wit the risk of it falling apart. if espn deal stays in tact even if it falls apart we just go back to independence.



not to mention the big east will schedule some good occ bball games with us to help our basketball teams strength of schedule.



it is a good move if the reports are correct that we are getting everything that we want.

Wait, what? If all sports other stay in the WCC why would they?

ND has a similar deal. In exchange for having all other sports in Big EAst, they play a couple games vs. BE teams each year. I suspect that deal continues, and that BYU gets a similar deal with hoops in exchange for going football only. BYU would be dumb to not demand that term. Big East could easily grant it. 4 BE games per season, 2 in each venue, would be sweet. Hello RPI boost.

I suspect a Western Bowl could get added. Believe me when I say that the LV Bowl would be open for it once their MWC deals expires. They would love PAC v. Big East. Outside shot as Holiday Bowl down the line as well, as the Big XII keeps dropping them down their pecking order.

I'm with Lawboy. If Boise and BYU and Air Force go to the Big East - heck even if it's just BYU and Boise - I bet the Las Vegas Bowl would love to be tied in with the Big East. The LV Bowl would love it even if they were only allowed to choose between BYU and Boise each year.

My brother is friends with the LV Bowl Tourney Director. We got free tix to the LV Bowl every year BYU played in it. IF the LV Bowl had its way, BYU would be in the game nearly every year. Boise State also sells tickets down there. Both pull decent enough ratings for ESPN as well, which owns the bowl. That's right--ESPN owns the LV Bowl. The MWC has nearly zero shot to retain it. They would be smart to tie themselves to the Poinsettia Bowl after 2013. I suspect that ESPN and LV Bowl directors will shoot for the BE, should BYU, BSU and AFA join up. Makes smart sense for them.

Good point on AF. They've got a good sized air force base in LV as well. LV Bowl and ESPN would love to tie themselves to BYU, Boise St and Air Force.

I'm LDS, and I LOVE Vegas.

According to my secret source - code name is wet blanket - Beast West will lose some Bowl ties when they lose teams to ACC and Big 12. Those conferences will pick some up. But Beast West may well get some new ones like LV Bowl if all of this happens. Should be ok overall - now that they will have 12 teams



Their TV deal will soon get reworked too. It will likely improve even with the lost teams.
