Nelson out for NMSU with rib and lung injury

Jay Drew is reporting that BYU has already decided Nelson will sit out the NMSU game:

Bronco did reaffirm that once Nelson is healthy enough to play he is still the starter.

Welp, they are 96th in pass defense, we could probably have Munns win the game for us. No reason to risk anything with Riley when we essentially have two bye weeks in a row.

How long do you think he will be out? I assume he was not wearing a flak jacket when he plays? He will now.

In the Drew article, one of the NMSU coaches said they have a player with about the same injury who didn't miss a game. Tony Romo also had a similar injury and didn't miss a game.

My guess is that because NMSU is so pathetic that Matt Reynolds could play QB and lead us to an easy win and because Riley takes more and harder hits than your average player, sitting out the NMSU game is a precautionary measure and gives Nelson three weeks to heal up for Hawaii the week after Thanksgiving.

A pneumothorax from a rib fracture can be anything from very minor (Tony Romo) to requiring a chest tube to constantly suck out the free air in the chest to open chest surgery to repair the whole in the lung (rare).

There is no need to risk anything for a few weeks. Let Riley heal up.

My wife is an RN and when I told her she said "ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?!?!" really concerned (she works in the ICU, so she gets the really bad cases.) I told her it wasn't very serious and he only had maybe 20% deflated was the estimate, and she relaxed.

It *can* get pretty bad. It doesn't sound like this is. I wouldn't be surprised to see Riley make a push for starting next week, and I also won't be surprised when the coaches don't let him. Riley is tough as freaking nails, and with ANOTHER bye week this month, he has the opportunity to rest up for 2 weeks.

I broke a rib once, and there is no way i would be playing football the next week or two.

Then again i don't have long flowing hair and a six pack...

Heaps played with his ribs fractured last year, so does that mean he's tougher? ;)

Big difference between "just a rib injury" and a punctured lung. That's like the difference between a concussion and a broken neck.

Lung was not punctured. My Doctor friend said 6 weeks but he does not know the severity of the injury.

IF I recall correctly, Heaps played with an injured rib, possibly fractured, last year against Utah.

Might already have it. In 3rd for career if I understood correctly. Hoffman may miss single season KO return yards because opponents may not score enough to get him the 2 returns per game he probably needs. He must have been miffed when Jacobsen got the return after the only Idaho score.

You don't miss 6 weeks for a rib injury without an accompanying lung injury. Besides which, I would expect Nelson back for the bowl game, if not Hawaii.

Like Mars, I think it's likely we'll see Riley back for the Hawaii game.

We all knew that RN was an injury waiting to happen, but it's ironic that it happened on a pass made standing in the pocket that could have happened to even our immobile QBs.

I've not seen anyone say anything about the fact our all-american lineman, Matt Reynolds, is the guy who allowed Nelson to get drilled straight in the chest. I didn't see the game, but what in the world was Reynolds doing? he's supposed to be one of the best, did he take the play off? was he scheming to get Heaps back on the field? I guess it just really bugs me that we play one of the worse teams in the country, and our Oline can't keep the Dline from killing our QB?
