Which QB played better against Idaho?

I found the stats a little surprising, and interesting:



Riley Nelson: 57% completion rate, 8 yards per throw, 1 TD.

Jake Heaps: 75% completion rate, 9 yards per throw, 2 TDs.



Jake did throw a pick, but it looked like Riley did too early on (I didn't see the replay, so I don't know why the refs waved it off... lack of ball control?). Riley also had 11 yards rushing. Neither was sacked.

What's the over-under on how long until someone says the only reason Heaps did well was because Idaho had prepped and gameplanned for Nelson's style and not Heaps?

According to PER, Riley did. Riley-200, Jake-175.

Both had PERs above 170. Both played very well. Neither played better than the other.

I was really disappointed that Hoffman did not field the kickoff return after Idaho go their TD - he was on a pace to break the single season record, but will have a tough time doing it with 1 touch per game.



I may have to root for NMSU to make a bunch of field goals.

I don't think that's unfair to suggest.



Idaho's coach, Akey, said that his team did prepare for Heaps. But likely not as the main quarterback.

Sadly, he forgot that Jacobsen quit trying years ago. Mathews, on the other hand, had a great game.

That catch by Matthews on the final drive of the 1st half where the throw was low and behind him was phenomenal. He also could have had a TD on the 1st drive of the game. He had his guy beat in the endzone, but Riley missed him.

You're right. Yesterday they had Riley listed as 4/6, but it's changed now to 4/7, I don't know why/how that happened. My bad, it was Jake who played better, then.

Jake passed a little better. Riley had a nice run. PER does not count that.



Maybe the OP should have an option for a draw.

Bingo. If Heaps learned one thing sitting on the bench, I hope that he learned that, at least right now, Hoffman is a more dependable #1 than Apo. Not a knock on Apo as much as that's huge props for Hoffman. Guy's got pantheon potential.



I know a lowered SOS helped last year, too, but funny how Hoffman was a big part of our turnaround last year, too. Hope we remember him going into 2012.

If Heaps can learn to stop throwing INTs, the debate gets heated again though (talking to Max Hall pre-game couldn't have helped).

Until Heaps starts dissecting defenses like Tom Brady, Riley's running ability will give him the edge against anyone at this point...Besides Heaps clearly throwing a prettier ball, I don't really see a major advantage of either's passing game over the other.

Has anybody tried inventing a QB rating that took rushing into account without giving rushing QBs an unfair advantage over pocket passers? I know ESPN has their QBR system, but it's a mess, spits out dumb results and they won't reveal their (apparently super-complex) formula to anyone.

checked the play by play on ESPN. Nelson was 4-6.
