Better Situation for BYU?

I honestly can't decided which would be better IMO. I like the idea of being in the Big 12 for the prestige and schedule. I don't like the thought of being Texas Tech.



But I also like the idea of being in a conference that is winnable almost every year, with a decent but not a sexy schedule.



Your thoughts?

I can't decide either. I vote to let BYU leaders decide. No matter what, GO COUGARS!!!

I've wanted the big 12 from day 1. I don't know what our record would be there from year to year but it is a better regional conference with more prestige. We have seen undefeated Big east teams not get into the NC game in the past couple of years. Run the table in the big 12 (or even have 1 loss in some years) and you are in the NC game. Much better conference.

True...but would an undefeated team in the Big East also be undefeated in the Big 12?



From a competition standpoint, Big 12 hands down. But the thing is...I like to WIN. I enjoyed our 7 point win over UCF 10,000,000x more than our 1 point loss to UT, level-of-competition-be-damned!

Better TV $$$, Better bowl affiliations, improves home hoops schedules with it.



Big XII #5 team goes to the Holiday Bowl. Big Esat #2 team go to teh Champs Bowl. Same payout, but San Diego is a way better place for BYU.



So even if BYU goes 8-4, the bowl bonus is better. Perhaps BYU could even get a Holiday Bowl deal in the B12, like 1 in 3 years guaranteed or something. Helps B12 tie up that bowl, gets Holiday a team that sells tickets, and gets BYU a game vs. the PAC. Everyone wins.

I'll take the one that 1) gives the church the best missionary tool and 2) yields the best on field product for BYU. I think these sort of go hand-in-hand. If an 8-4 BYU in the Big12 would beat a 11-1 team from the Big East I'd take 8-4. That said I think an 11-1 BYU from the Big East would yield a little more exposure. Could be wrong though.



This year though I think BYU would be 8-4 in the Big East and 5-7 in the Big 12. I don't think there is any question about which I would prefer.

I didn't vote because neither choice seems realistic - too optimistic about our typical annual result. Keeping in mind that Steve Young's signature win over Missouri was a miracle play at the end of a close, low-scoring game in one of our absolute best years - not a typical year - and we would do well to be TTech most years. Maybe we find a way to step up without speed until we figure out how to solve that recruiting issue within HC constraints.

Do not be fooled by our record vs Texas and Oklahoma. We caught them at just the right time.



8 Big 12 teams have winning records including Baylor at 5 wins who beat TCU. Would we beat MO at 4-5. Maybe. Maybe not. Kansas at 2-7 is the only team similar to those we have beaten.



Last year would have been similar. Add in losses to Utah and TCU OOC and that is the reality of an off year or two.



I do not believe BYU has ever had a team that could get through just the conference games in Bug 12 this year with less than two losses - ever.



But - I would be OK with trying to step up to the challenge if we water down OOC like everyone else. Leap of faith, though.

I don't think examples from the 80s provide an accurate snapshot of where BYU currently stands, or where Mizzou, Pitt, or any of corresponding programs stand.



Having said that, I agree with your first sentence. 8-4 and 11-1 to me read like our ceilings in the respective conferences, not our expectation.



Being in the Big XII would be cool, but honestly, I don't even know if we could count on being a bowl team every year. I doubt we would be this year(although the Big XII is pretty great this year).

My heart says Big 12. My head says Big East.



I think 8-4 in the Big 12 is a wildly optimistic yearly record in the Big 12. I'm thinking we will live in 6-6 land fighting to be bowl eligible most years.



The Big East, or Conference USA Plus, is a slight notch above with what we are used to. BYU can be good to great in that conference.

If you want to be the best, you play the best. BYU as currently constituted is not an elite Big 12 team. But, if we got into the big 12 we would have to step up and get better. I personally, am confident that we have the coaching to do it. We may have to go through some years that look like what the utes are getting this year but with better recruiting in the big 12, we would be able to compete in that conference every year. Big 12 is where I would want BYU. I am not a fan of the big east. I don't want our Basketball team languishing in the WCC while the football team travels to the east coast to play. I want a conference where all our major sports can land and make a home for themselves.



Having said that, if the Admin makes the decision to go to the big east, I will support it. I was not a fan of independance, but I support it.....at least until something better comes along.

Prior years only slightly more. Big 12 will have 6-8 of those every year.

Right, I wasn't disagreeing with you. I just don't think a 1984 BYU team struggling against a 6-6 team that won't even be in the Big East if we join it is necessarily emblematic of what would happen if we joined that conference.



For the record, Bronco Mendenhall is 29-21 against teams with bowl-qualifying records. (Thanks, Jay Drew!)

winning really is everything. In your scenario, got to go with the wins.



might want to add to that, no one hates us in the East (yet) and the Big 12 is a mess . I've become less inclined to be between the Oklahoma and Texas power struggle.

I second this. With B12 affiliation we have a better chance at landing nearly all 5* LDS players and a few 4* non-lds players.

I would be surprised if the Big East can retain AQ status. The Big East West division (lol) is very reminiscent of the old WAC, MWC, Conference USA, etc.

I don't agree. I think our recruiting would improve by some degree, but just as some LDS kids are always going to come to BYU by virtue of it being BYU, some LDS kids are always going to NOT go to BYU by virtue of it being BYU.

Gotta say I am surprised by the results so far. I expected big 12 to win in a landslide.

I'd rather have BYU join the BE than Big 12 because (as long as it stays together as an AQ) the opportunity for long term success is greater. I have not thought this through completely, but the reason I say this is because we would have a bit of a softer schedule than other BCS conferences, which would allow us to ease into the steeper competition. Assuming BYU makes the Orange bowl a few times, I could see the BE conference champ getting left out of NCG due to a weak SOS. Once we became a yearly contender, we could up our SOS via OOC games. I guess what I am saying is that I like the idea of learning to swim before getting thrown into the deep end...incremental success builds confidence.



It also provides that national exposure we want, assuming we can still be seen on national tv if we join...big if, but not as big if we join the Big 12?

I like watching my team win. Football is entertainment and winning is more entertaining. I say Big East-thing.
