Jake Heaps' potential

Why is everyone sold on Jake's potential? I can think of four reasons. And none of them carry much water.



1) Cause he so did well in HS? So did Lark, Munns and Nelson. So did Matt Berry and Brett Engemann. HS success does not necessarily transfer to the college game just like college success does not necessarily transfer to the NFL (see John Beck vs., Andy Dalton in the NFL)



2) He throws a really pretty ball. That's wonderful. Good for you. Can you do it during a game? apparently not.



3) He's the best practice qb we have. See #2.



4) All he needs is more _______________. It's an excuse. He's had game experience. he's had two years in college, he's had VERY good coaches, he has great receivers. He has decent protection. He's had nearly a full year as a starter (half 2010, half 2011) against some pretty easy competition). It's an excuse.



I had a great HS instructor who used to say that the word "potential" was a dirty word. It simply measured where you were with where you should be.



Jake might figure things out and might become a great qb but for now he's had his chance. The only way he gets another one is if Nelson gets injured or starts playing with a blindfold. Potential is not a good enough reason for bad play.

Yeah, opposing coaches talking about him having NFL skill is absolute BS. You nailed it. No potential here...



Thanks for starting another thread about "potential vs. production." We haven't had one for about 5 mins or so... ;)

There is no need to discuss his potential until he starts taking meaningful snaps again for BYU. Hopefully that is in 2013 when he begins to fully realize his potential.



Otherwise this dead horse has been beaten more than sufficiently.

I suppose opposing coaches evaluations of Heaps' potential would be a good #5 excuse. Those same coaches often came away with wins.

I think it's a good and valid question.



Why did I think Jake Heaps has so much potential?



1. Elite 11 QB MVP and #1 QB of his class. But by all sources it was the weakest QB class in years and on any other year he may or may not be in the top 10 of QBs.

2. BYU fan - and I really want BYU to get and have the best QBs. We're just coming off of John Beck and Max Hall that went a long way in restoring a certain QB swagger to BYU and if Max Hall can come in essentially out of now where and have 10 win seasons then the #1 QB (see #1) can come in and get that Utah and TCU monkey off our back.

3. All of Jake Heaps pre-enrollment recruiting. He was assembling a dream team to come and play with him.

4. His talk of coming to BYU and winning a National Championship.

5. He does throw a really pretty ball in fall camp.



I think those are the 4 reasons why I felt that he had a lot of potential coming into BYU and coming into this year.

I bought into Heaps "potential" because of what I saw from him last year. Weak teams or not, he was going through his reads and throwing to the open guy (see last years utah game when his PER was not really good but everyone thought he did awesome). It took me completely by surprise this year when he came out and started following his primary reciever with his eyes again like he did early last year. I don't care when he starts for us again, be it next year or in 2013 after a redshirt, I just want to see his eyes going through the progressions (like Riley Nelson's do right now) and throw to the open guy.

Jake haters up to bashing again. He will in time be good, and hopefully the armchair QB's here can acknowledge his potential then. Just give it a rest, and leave the kid alone. I do believe that if our OL would have been what was promoted in the pre-season, we would not be discussing this. Riley makes the line look good because he can run. And they know it, because it takes the pressure off of them.

Until Heaps plays another down if football, can we stop talking about him?

He played Vs ISU and may very well play Vs Idaho. Maybe we should quit talking about him until he plays another meaningful down.



But he wii come up in discussion, because the Quest to help him realize his elusive potential continues to keep Lark from getting developed as a backup QB.



Watch USU Vs UH if you wonder why this matters. Riley and Jake because of their styles of play are injuries waiting to happen, especially given blocking lapses when the heat comes.

Talk about what you want. IMO, we've chatted about Heaps all year long with nothing new added to the conversation in the last few weeks. We all know he talked big and walked small.



Yes, Heaps is an injury away from being the starter. Lark is two injuries away. Lark may get a shot depending on whether Heaps redshirts. Who knows if that will happen. And if Riley gets hurt early next season, Heaps is still a candidate to play. Lark will likely never see the field.

Question: does Claw and Gunk have the "potential" not to be such a heaps-hater?

Answer: yes. Because potential is a subjective and arbitrary term. Although once jake does do well I suspect you'll turn like a dog to his vomit.

Give the kid a break. What, did he ruin your life? Jake was the MVP of the bowl game. He may have played crappy this year but to go so far as to shoot down his "potential"--LAME!

For the record, I think Jake has tons of potential and has the ability to become a very good QB. And I think his best chance at realizing all of his potential is at BYU.



His QB coach has sent both of his starting QBs to the NFL. Doman has a good track record. Give him a little more time to figure out his OC/QB roles and I fully believe he can help Jake get there as well.

Is your math wrong, or is one of those not a reason? I see five that you listed. :roll:



However, I completely agree with you. Also, he may not be determined or fiery, but he's committed. He hasn't left yet. Months ago, I heard from some sources (not him) that if he didn't start within a certain date, he would leave.



Well, that date is long past. I don't believe he is going to leave. If he wants to start before his senior year, he's going to redshirt (smart idea, by the way), or he's going to work harder. ;)



Sometime, he's going to get it right again. He will have more air under some passes so that receivers can run under them to make the catch, he's going to check off other receivers, etc. For now, we can only wait.

Feel free to add to the list that he was the first frosh QB to ever be a bowl game mvp. Sounds like living up to his potential a little bit at least.

Where did I shoot down his potential?



I am actually trying to "give the kid a break." You as well many others on this forum keep insisting on talking about him despite there being nothing new to say about him. No other backup QB in the history of BYU has received so much air time as Heaps. It's ridiculous.



We all know the kid is full of potential, but failed to tap into it this season. Potential is funny like that; it's absolutely worthless if unrealized.



I do not "hate" Heaps. Never have and never will. I hope he does well and have never wished him to fail. Should he actually realize his potential, I will be quite glad for him and would not consider my enthusiasm for his success as hypocritcal or turning from my vomit like a dog.
