Watching BYU/ND from 2004...

A few thoughts:



1. That 2004 team was STACKED with talent. The fact that our 2004 team went 5-7 proves what a crap coach Crowton was. Great recruiter, TERRIBLE coach.



2. Man, I miss Bronco the D-Cord. It was AWESOME to see Brady Quinn running for his life on just about every passing play. The D was aggressive, swarming, and played like their hair was on fire. They blitzed from all angles on that game. They had multiple players in the backfield on just about every play. No "bend but don't break". I wish Bronco would watch this game and remember. They absolutely rattled an NFL QB in that game. Fun fun fun defense to watch.



3. Watching Matt Payne play is a good reminder about what kind of an influence a great kicker can have on a game. He pinned ND deep in their territory on great punts time after time after time, kicked a 53-yard FG, and kicked the ball into the EZ on kickoffs. Forgot what a good kicker he was. If he was on our team this year, we don't lose to TCU. Yes, the PUNTER can make that big of a difference.



4. What is it with highly touted QB's from the state of Washington? After Beck got hurt, Matt Berry looked in this game much like Heaps most of this year. I hope that Heaps career can go better than Berry's did from here on out.



5. Brady Poppinga was an absolute stud. Surely there's another Poppinga or two coming along...right? Please?

NFL guys on that team, poppinga, john Denny, Cameron jensen, Aaron Francisco, john beck, pitta, tahi, Scott young, collin, watkins, coats. Guys that got a tryout in the league, kuresa, Curtis brown, markell staffieri, anyway tons of talent.



Look how fast the d was, man those guys flew around and got to the ball.

Actually the theme of the 3-3-5 is bend but don't break. I watched this game for a bit too and i remember being at that game. WOW was it loud, the defense was on FIRE...

Speking about how Crowton underachieved with talent, how bout ND under Willingham... Brady Quinn played in a BCS bowl game a year or two later.... ND was stacked with talent.. Willingham then went to Washington where he detroyed that program as well....Crowton at least went on to win some NC as an O coord.

I watched part of that game on Saturday night. Sorry, but I don't know about any more Poppingas.



Anyway, I might have said this before, might not, but our d-backs should trust the front 7 more. They should play bump-and-run, one-on-one coverage, and maybe put one guy (LB, maybe?) in the middle. Then, you rush all of the rest. QBs run for their lives, no time.



Ups:

-more sacks

-less run game

-shorter passes (for the most part)



Downsides:

-a few more big plays



So, basically, they're going to have a few more big pass plays, but not enough to make a huge difference. The total effect is we have a better D that allows less points, causes more turnovers, and gives our offense better field position.
