Some of Vai's elaboration on his logic surprised me. You have to work your way through the first couple of pages pointing out we have 4 starters right now who transfered to BYU - reminds us we don't think pof them as quitters - and reasons why numerous players transfer in and out every year, often with help and blessings of coaches - to get to the heart of his assessment of Jake.

Bottom line according to Vai

Nelson is better than Heaps.

Heaps has never won the heart and soul of his teammates - might not ever do so.

Unlike McMahon who red-shirted behind Marc Wilson, Jim was better than Marc and had the confidence of teammates - Jake is not better than Riley and lacks that teammate support - so Jim was confident that after Marc graduated - Jim would be the guy - Not so Jake - He might not even be the guy post Riley.

Jake might - not will - flourish elsewhere

What he did not say - he did not say Jake got screwed

Sorry, don't read him anymore. He doesn't have any sources. Former players shouldn't encourage, espouse, invite, advise BYU players to transfer to the U.

The players who start for BYU who transferred, did so for different reasons than Heaps would be transferring for.

I feel kinda close-minded for this, but I really don't care what his justifications are. He wrote a trolling column, and he failed to justify it on the merits of the original article. I don't feel like giving him an extra page-view just to see if he can justify it with a second.

You know what pisses me off more than anything? The massive amounts of unsolicited "advice" being aimed at a 20-year-old kid who's in a tough spot right now. Being QB at a big university means you're gonna have to deal with some media scrutiny, and that's fair, but that's no excuse for a columnist to offer his personal and professional advice to a kid via an "open letter" read by a couple other tens of thousands.

If you're not a kid's parent, or close friend, saying stuff like "you came to BYU to get married, now that you're married you're free to transfer" just sounds off-base and uncalled for.

This is Vai hearing from others how stupid the thought is and only trying to dig himself out of a hole. It's a stupid thought, and the additional "justification" only makes it stupider

That is definitely true re why Uale who passed up a scholarship at the U to walkon at the Y transferred. Probably true about why Nelson, who started as a freshman at USU and came here. They probably did not come due to lack of PT. Spirituality was probably significant. Riley may or may not have come for a bigger stage. PT may well have been part of why the USC guys came, but the cheating at USC might have been big and spirituality might have been. Vai indicates that physical safety for family factored in for Fangupo and he clearly has direct knowledge of Fangupo - married to his first cousin.

I generally think transferring is not a good idea, and don't think Heaps should - but my world isn't so black and white as to paint Vai evil for having a different opinion.

But if you hate the Utes, then I can understand the reaction. The Utes, other than this season, are my 2nd favorite team - so my auto-venom dispenser is directed elsewhere.

If Heaps transfers - Utah or any other D1 - sit out a year situation - is dicey. U appears now to have an open slot - I bet a JC transfer dying to play for Chow is going to show up with 3 years to play 2. Heaps should watch and learn and stay at BYU.

So it's okay to transfer if you're transferring to byu, but not to transfer somewhere else to get an opportunity to play? sorry, just not sure I understand the logic here. If jake really feels he isn't going to get a chane to play here that he might get somewhere else and that is what he wants, why shouldn't he transfer? I hope he sticks around but I don't see how you can fault a guy for just wanting to play while at the same time giving a pass to byu transfers because you find their reasons better (ecclisiasto al I assume?) Beyond that, how exactly are you aware of the reasons behind transfers?

I thought to myself, "Hey, let's just give Vai one more chance," and I clicked on the link. I read two paragraphs where Vai informs us what a great guy and great journalist Gordon Monson is. I stopped reading and went and stole some halloween candy from the kids. Birds of a feather....

Vai is a tool and a Ute homer. I can't wait for the next time he gets announced for something at halftime!!!

Vai is doing a diservice to Bronco and to BYU. He is undermining Bronco's authority with his team. Unfortunately and I know some of you wont agree with what I'm about say. I think Vai is doing this intentionally, and for what? All because Bronco didn't hire his friend. I would say that Vai needs to get over himself with this problem. But I don't think he will, what I think you will see is Vai continuing to write this crap and its just going to get worse unless someone steps in and convinces him to stop doing this. Its either going have to be Tom Holmoe or Lavell Edwards to convince him to stop. The reason I mention these two gentleman is I dont think anyone else would be able to do anything to change his mind.

Heaps should not transfer. Heaps should stay, redshirt and compete for the starting job as a Junior. That is his best path to success. Utah is not a good fit because they have recruited a quarterback out of California that will probably start before Heaps is eligible. He probably has a better chance of starting his junior year at BYU than he does starting his junior year at Utah. The bottom line is that unless Heaps goes to a New Mexico or Utah State or that tier of school, he will not be a slam dunk to start. Bottom line, if he stays at BYU he has a 50+% chance of succeeding. If he succeeds at BYU he will probably get some looks in the NFL. If he moves on, he has a 50-% chance of succeeding and he may not even get starting looks in college.

I have nothing against Vai. But when he talks about his warm relationship and respect for Monson, I start to think he is more of a media guy than an ex BYU football player. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck but lays a goose egg, it ain't a duck!

I'm sure that Monson isn't a bad guy. He is simply hired to get attention. He works for a paper that is the anti-Deseret News. As such, he can't take the BYU stance. He must take the other side. He might even be a closet BYU fan. He is simply trying to sell newspapers and keep his job at the same time. I have no dislike for him personally.

Vai, on the other hand, works for a newspaper that is more pro BYU than anti, he has every reason to favor BYU and there is no management expectation to go against BYU. As such, he is probably printing his true feelings. This is distrubing.

If you write things that aren't true or that you don't believe are true just to sell papers, then I strongly question your moral character.

Then you have inside information that I don't have. The point is, he is under pressure to blast BYU and he does. Vai has no pressure to blast BYU and he still does. Which is worse?

How about if you simply point out the negative and ignore the positive?

Then I don't want to read your articles, and I wonder about what goals you have set for yourself as a human being because you're definitely not making the world a better place or helping anyone besides yourself.

I think there is an appropriate way to give people an opportunity to better themselves. To help them realize the way they are, and what the choices they have made are leading them to, or have already culminated in. I think that is just one aspect parenting, and leadership in general.

I do not think the media is the proper format for that. I do think that it is fine to point out where things aren't working. I don't think it is good to only concentrate on negative things and bash them home.

I think some things Gordon does and writes can really be helpful to BYU. Once in a great while he has in-depth, good things to say. Most of the time he leans too hard into it and makes too much out of it, though.

With that said, I can't stand the radio show. I think if somebody besides Jake Scott were in there it would be more tolerable. If you want to find a beacon of negativity, look no further.
