Expansion talk dead?

I, as much as anyone, was very entrenched in all of the expansion talk. My hopes of BYU going to the B12 were high, and were ultimately dashed...multiple times. However, over the past week, since WV was accepted talk has died down considerably. Not only here, but on rumorboard and nationally (other than pending law suits). Does this mean we are done talking about expansion and can now focus on our crappy indy schedule?

Just found this article at USAtoday. I thought they did a great job and love their ideas. I especially love their redrawn conference lines. I think this would be great.

I like the idea for a Bad boy conference, all of those on suspension. Break the rules and you would have to leave your conference.

Hmmm... lot of MWC teams not listed. And they complained about us leaving why?

That conference alignment is funny. REALLY funny.



First of all they put Missouri and Texas AM BACK WITH TEXAS, the one school they probably want to be aligned with LEAST in the world.



They split Oklahoma from Texas to join a conference with Iowa, Boise and Utah? Yeah. That'd go over well.



Syracuse, Pitt and WVU back in the Big Least family! how cute! I'm sure they'll be welcomed back with hugs and open arms (AK-47 type)

As far as I am concerned, the expansion talk for BYU re:Big XII is not over until BYU starts to announce some future games. Until that happens, it means we are still talking, and still putting future Indy scheduling on the back burner. Because if BYU to Big XII was dead, we would have seen some games announced for 2012 and beyond by now.

I tend to agree with you Lawboy. Things are just a bit too quiet...even for BYU. Something has to be up. However, not much has been in the media to make our ears perk up. Other than that guy out of Oklahoma saying that the B12 will add Louisville soon and another unnamed team. Speculation is that it is ND in all sport but football and BYU in football. Not sure what level of credibility he has.

I hope it's dead. That way we can start beating it again.

Here's an idea and just an idea. Orangebloods and barking carnival have reported the ND is looking to possibly joining the Big 12 in non-football sports, with a guaranteed 6 games against Big 12 teams a year in football. Take for what it's worth.



I was thinking, if it's true, why not do the same with BYU?



If ND were to join in Non-football sports only, this would leave an odd number of schools. Add BYU, and the number is then again even, making overall scheduling much easier.



For BYU, this could alleviate any late season football scheduling issues. It would keep your non-football programs happy (I've gotten that from what I've seen on here), and BYU gets to keep it's tv contracts, and its independence in football, but have a lot of its scheduling concerns alleviated.



Obviously, the no-Sunday issue would have to be worked out with the networks, but if ND were to join in, that alone, with Texas, OU and ND pushing it, could create some traction to overcome that issue, and cause the networks to cave.



Anyway I was thinking of this because I like BYU and its fanbase, and would love to see you guys in our league at least in some capacity.

I have a question concerning NCAA rules. Is there a requirement for number of conference games or number of cross division games in a conference with split divisions? If not BYU and Boise should give the Big East a proposal. BYU/Boise/AFA/SMU/Houston/SDSU/ND will form a Big East division for football. They will play 6 divisional games per year and the winner will participate in the conference championship game. The in conference games will be part of the Division conference TV contract, and revenue will be split equally for these games. The 6 remaining OOC games will be scheduled by the schools individually and the TV revenue will belong to the school. ND can maintain its CBS deal for the 6 OOC games while BYU and Boise can retain their ESPN contracts for the OOC games. OOC games against the other Big East division are encouraged but do not count towards conference standings. That's a lot of headache for TV deals, but I don't see the conference being successful without BYU, Boise, and ND.



In response to Hook 'em. This might work well for Texas too. LHN/BYUTV would have rights to the OOC games.It's a hybrid conference/independent setup.

You're assuming there is anything to announce.

It's a decent idea, but I think that BYU's football program is the only reason the Big 12 is at all interested in bringing us in. The other sports are a hindrance. So why would the Big 12 bring in the other sports, have to deal with Sunday play issues...and not get the football program?

Good point and you're probably right, but technically, it does bring in football with 6 games guaranteed annually.



By all accounts the Big 12 isn't ready "yet" to move beyond 12 teams (or even 10), like the ACC and SEC have.



If the Super-Conference is the future, like many are speculating, then why not align yourself with schools like ND and BYU who, if and/or when the conferences go super, will have no other option but to join a conference, and who would they most likely join, other than a conference that they already have ties with?



It would be attractive to Texas, because BYU and ND both have their own contracts/networks, and thus two more teams in their corner that aren't going to want to tap into anyone else's 3rd tier rights.



For BYU, this would all hinge on if the ND chatter is even remotely true. ND doesn't want to give up its independence, but the Big East is quickly becoming a less attractive option. The Big 12 would love to have ND, and would be willing to do what it takes to get them in.



If ND were to join, it would make sense to add another school to the non-football schedule to balance the league and possibly split the non-football sports into divisions. If so, then why not BYU, if they (networks) can agree to the no-Sunday rule?



Besides, the second highest revenue sport is basketball, and BYU would be an excellent addition.

I always lump those WA schools together anyways. They're practically the same. Just like Oregon St Ducks and the UoA Sundevils right? ;)

BYU announced the Boise series extension as a way of telling Utah we do not need them. They wanted 2 for 1's and we decided to leverage that by replacing them.



And Washington State game was announced for week 1, same as the GT game originally was. Yet we have no announcement on the new date. Additionally, we still have 1 open game yet to be announced for 2012 as well. And no new series announced for 2013 and beyond, where we have gaping holes in our scheduling.



Point being, BYU is waiting, for a reason.

BYU announced the Boise series extension as a way of telling Utah we do not need them. They wanted 2 for 1's and we decided to leverage that by replacing them.



And Washington State game was announced for week 1, same as the GT game originally was. Yet we have no announcement on the new date. Additionally, we still have 1 open game yet to be announced for 2012 as well. And no new series announced for 2013 and beyond, where we have gaping holes in our scheduling.



Point being, BYU is waiting, for a reason.

I thought 2013 was full with the 8 announced games plus the additional 4 WAC games, and I also thought Georgia Tech had leaked word that the BYU game was slated for October 27 to move their FCS game (Louisiana Southern?) up to the opener? In any event, it was the OSU game that bumped Georgia Tech, not WSU. Ga Tech was an October 13 game, and then OSU announced their game with BYU that date, and the chat boards just assumed that Ga Tech was moved to the opener. I don't recall there ever being an announcement to that effect.



If Georgia Tech remains on the schedule, which the 10/27 date would indicate, and if you add in the WAC games for the season after, BYU has zero openings in 2012 or 2013.
