Here is a tweet from cougarstats.

"CougarStats: If you don't take kindly to the wins comparison b/n LaVell and Bronco, then consider that #BYU's SOS on average has been tougher for Bronco."

Oh and by the way, he did it with a patchwork defense using walk on starters at the CB and safety positions because he lost 8 players to honor code in 2004.

I think Bronco is a great coach. I do think his inexperienced staff is hurting though. He hired them, so that it on him.

Just frustrated as a fan. Before hth year, I thought 10-3 would be a good year, coming off a 7-6 season. And it still will be. 10 win seasons need to be taken happily. However, I still think we have underachieved, and that is what is frustrating. The Utah loss still stings, and the TCU loss stings. The Heaps-Nelson drama stinks. The Doman as OC has been difficult in year 1. The lack of a pass rush from our front has not been fun to watch. We are not a disruptive defense at all, unless we are playing an FCS school. It is clear we have issues, so all things considered, 10-3 would be a good year. I just hoped for more. And I guess that is one me. I will not buy the hype anymore.

I still think we lose the bowl game, if it's SMU or Houston, so 9 and 4 would be a disappointing season. Still wavering on the trip to the islands as well.

Probably be SMiss or Tulsa. Houston might get BCS this year, and I think we play team #3 in C-USA with this game.

The hawaii game has me nervous. This will be their super bowl, they hate BYU over there. With the jet lag and Hawaii playing like they have nothing to lose in an environment that is as hostile if not more hostile then utah on the hill will be scary. Much better BYU teams have gone to hawaii and come back with their tails between their legs. (see BYU 1990 and 2001).

9-4 would not be disappointing for me. I would know it could have been better, but I would also know that improvement had been made over a 7-6 season too. I would be hopeful and anticipating '12.

I'll take 10 - 3 seasons.

But I think what gets fans so frustrated is we see programs like Utah, BSU, TCU, and even Hawaii compete on a national stage and we're eager to do the same. If they can do it, why can't we? And, that's certainly a fair question. The difference in talent is marginal. It's not like BSU is full of 5-star recruits; yet, they still make it happen.

I think Bronco is a great coach. I also think he can do better, so I have no problem with constructive criticism where he has short-comings.

What I have a problem with are people who think he sucks or that he needs to be replaced.

100 percent agree. Bronco is no Chris Peterson. That guys is flat out a great great coach, the best in my estimation, in the country. But then again I doubt highly Chris Peterson could do much better than Bronco at BYU--the schools are just very very different when it comes to standards, expectations and demands. I fully support Bronco and hope he stays a long time. I hope he improves, grows and develops (along with his staff). I think he can and will.

He does not suck and he is a GREAT fit for the program.

In my view, his areas that need improvement are clock managment, when to go for it on 4th down, and motivating the team in a way that they come out loose for big games. They always seem way too tight for big games.

I'd apply for the job, but my football resume is sorely lacking. :D

All said, I am glad Bronco is here and hope he sticks around a while. Although, someone may have to talk to that wife of his who wants to flee Utah ASAP.

This is my lesson learned as well. Stop buying into the hype. The only undefeated year BYU has ever had was when it was completely unexpected. No one saw it coming in '84 after the departure of Steve Young. After a few games the players realized they were going to be something special. So, from now on, I will expect losses to the good teams and celebrate success along the way.

BYU has been essentially an 8-4 program facing generally weak schedules over the last 2 decades. Anything better than that has to be considered above average. We'll see how the rest of the season plays out.

Schedule to win and Magic happens. Schedule to prove you can beat anyone anywhere and you get Notre Dame at best and 0-12 UW in an off year.

Can't have it both ways. Ask ND East who is sporting 3 losses themselves.

If there was an elite level coach that had multiple NC's waiting in wings I would be all for it. But since that type of coach is really non-existant, that doesn't factor in for me. I like Bronco and since he really is the best we have, I want him to stay. But to be better than just a good coach (a great coach to me is an elite coach) he has some things to change. Here are my thoughts in no particular order:

1. Bronco has at least one loss ever year where we look unprepared and scared. Don't get that at all.

2. He deserves all the blame for high expectations, especially this year. When you talk constantly about a goal to win an NC (I hate the public discussion of it) and then you cancel practices because he has never seen an offense more prepared, and then they put this kind of stuff on the field, he deserves all the blame. Under promise and over deliver. Everyone else seems to understand that but him.

3. I have never seen a public figure with a thinner skin. The man can dish it out but can't take it. When you are still complaining 7 years later that fans boo'ed you, you really need to grow up. He sounds like my 10 year old.

4. If you are going to call out the fans for being idiots, then you need to be able to handle when the fans can see that you have some issues too. He whines all the time about he is treated. See #3.

The nice thing is all these issues are fixable. Just hope that he does fix it.

Even 1984 had signature wins vs a Pitt team that won about 3 games that year and a 6 win Michigan team in the Bowl game.

It is what it is - when you deal with that reality instead of trying to be something we are not, we can do anything BSU, TCU, U, and UH did. But BYU wanted to skip that and go straight to a schedule that would assure a NC game if we ran the table. Wrong table.

I agree with number 3 and 4 big time. The way he treats current and pottential recruits shocks me. Many people are concerned that football is so low on his priority list. I do know he is a good man not sure about the rest.

Boise,

I'm asking this in all seriousness. Is Boise State's talent level that much greater than BYU's that a Chris Peterson could not elevate BYU's play to be nearly equivalent to that of BSU's?

I see serious execution problems with BYU. In years past, BYU typically lost 'big' games because of their lower talent level, but not because of poor execution, and definitely not because of game-planning. It was their execution that allowed them to compete in the first place, despite their overall lack of talent (with the exception of a few gifted QBs and TEs). Now it seems to be reversed. Their overall talent is probably better than it has ever been, but their execution and game-planning seems to be flat out bone-headed at times. To me, this is due to coaching, not due to a talent deficit.

I'd really be interested in your take why this team could not approach a Boise St. level of play based on player personnel.

Thanks.

Just a thought on Petersen - dude impresses me in big games, but I've always wondered how he'd do if he ever left BSU. Before he got there, BSU was already a perennial "blow out most of the WAC" team. BSU's performance got Koetter, Nutt and Hawkins sweet coaching gigs elsewhere. Koetter and Hawkins got canned, and Nutt's probably on his way, though at least he's had some success at two different SEC schools.

Petersen's the easiest identifiable X-factor that took BSU from a current BYU-esque team (head and shoulders above most non-AQ teams, not quite up to play with the big boys) to what they are now. But I wonder how much was just keeping the ball rolling.

Now I'm leaving before I say anything about Bronco. ;)

BSU, TCU, and U have better coaches than BYU - and absolutely none of them seem to have any desire to come to BYU unless it might be an assistant at U if we promoted him - i.e. fire Doman and you could probably get the guy Norm kind of squeezed out. That ain't gonna change anything.

Just for those who do not remember.

Kyle turned BYU down even though he was a star player here. That is how we got Bronco - after almost promoting Reynolds.

BYU does not pay well enough to buy anyone.

Andy Reid has tured it down without ever showing any interest every time the HC job opens up.

The Texas Tech guy might come - use us as a stepping stone - then go some place BIGGER.

Bronco is not an elite coach. He is the best coach for BYU and who we are and are not.

Detmer, McMahon, Young - no coaching exprience. Think Doman and Cahoon for reference points. Risky and anything but quick.

This is a perfect list 100% perfect! I love #2 you were dead on. I love BM I dont think with all the handcuffs that go into being the coach at BYU if there is another coach out there that could do as good a job let alone do a better job than Bronco. My problems with him are some of the things he says. The the talk of a getting to a higher level gets old. And I swear if next year I hear him talk NC I am going to throw up.
