Nelson Nearly Brings Bronco To Tears

Did anyone catch the Bronco Mendenhall show on Sportsbeat last night? Wrubbel was asking Bronco about Nelson. Bronco was going on about his grit and determination, how hard he tries, and Bronco's voice started cracking and it appeared that he was getting choked up. It looked like he was about to start tearing up. After that question they cut to some footage from the game and when they came back to him it seemed like he had composed himself.



...or he could have swallowed a fly as he was answering the question. (Or was thinking about our punting game)

I am sorry...but this makes me cringe. I appreciate how Bronco dislikes entitlement and how he is so good at getting production from cast-offs and walk-ons...but why does it always seem like we get more from less and less from more?

I am sorry...but this makes me cringe. I appreciate how Bronco dislikes entitlement and how he is so good at getting production from cast-offs and walk-ons...but why does it always seem like we get more from less and less from more?

Are we getting less from more? It seems like most of our walk on's were not tearing it up as freshmen or sophomores. I think we are seeing talented young players making the stupid mistakes that young players make. This team is loaded with freshmen and sophomores. We need to have more patience. I got caught in the trap of believing that this team was a BCS buster potential this year. I shouldn't have been so naive. Teams loaded with Sr's bust the BCS, teams loaded with freshmen and sophomores lose games they should win by making stupid mistakes.

RIley's play brought me to tears vs. TCU for all the wrong reasons. Two blue zone turnovers that were boneheaded plays. Both on 1st down. Both just chucking it up. Add in another throw away while being sacked, instead of securing the ball, that could have resulted in a fumble. Another out pattern that would have been a pick-6 but for a drop by the cornerback.



I get it that he is gritty and has heart. I get that this team lacks that. But jeeze, gotta take care of the freaking football. Especially in the scoring zone. Situational awareness is lacking. That brings me to tears too.

Until the coaching staff learns to coach/cultivate talent, the team will be where they are at, no more, no less. Don't get me wrong, I like a hard worker as much as anyone, but when we get talent, the coaching staff struggles to get them where they need to be. The "culture" so often talked about, is something that is self defeating, because it will be bettered by the good teams who have learned to integrate the whole team together. This BYU team has divisions, but you won't hear about them. Just an observation from the sidelines.

Add in another ball thrown to nobody, that actually got intercepted: but a different defender ended up doing a PI against a different receiver, getting it called back.



And as for the INT that was a good play, the same guy (#41) dropped a FOR SURE pick right through his hands on a Riley overthrow.



As to the topic of the OP:



I am getting a little tired of the "I play the people that I 'admire' " mentality.



Is Mike Hague, or any other backup safety really worse than Uale?

Just because there is "no quit" in someone does not make them the best option. The skills need to be there to compete with the big boys. Hasn't Bronco said they want to contend for a National Championship? With the current mentality, it will be very difficult to achieve.

with our current talent level, it will be difficult to achieve. If you compare size and speed to some of the elite level schools, BYU isn't even close.

I plan on watching the LSU-Bama game Saturday. I think it will show just how far BYU is from elite status. It won't be pretty, because both teams have great size combined with crazy speed. We have plenty of size but lack overall team speed. Only our LB group is at a level I am comfy with, for 3 of the 4 spots.



By the way, I love watching the LSU D play. They are crazy disruptive and have play makers in the secondary. If you thought Texas was fast, watch LSU. Better as a unit, and that secondary is NFL caliber, especially the corners. Makes me jealous. Hope they pound Bama.

"I sure would love to play Player A instead of Player B. But I just can't see myself crying over Player B. Sure he might be more talented, but I just don't like him. He'd never bring me to tears. So I'm going to go with Player A. And Player A sure tries hard, that I will overlook every single mistake he makes. In fact, next week in practice, I'm going to make Player B run stairs for all of Player A's mistakes."

If BYU were to play LSU or Alabama, I don't think we would have 100 yards of offense.

You can joke about it all you want but there is some justification to it.

It will show too that about 100 other teams are also far far from these guys too....Sheesh....we are not LSU or AL already.

Wagner plays over KVN sometimes

The dropoff from Ogletree to Sorenson (the LB not the Safety) is actually quite big. Missing Olgetree in the Texas game cost us dearly against the run.

Travis Uale is a complete train wreck, if we don't have anyone better than him we are in a terrible state of affairs.

Kariya could be a descent full back, but the future (at least right now) is Juice or Alisa.

DiLuigi is an interesting case-he becomes less effective with our current QB than he was with the previous few.

Hadley was getting Tree's reps vs. TCU, especially on passing downs. Or we moved KVN inside on the zones and added Frazier to the outside.



After all, Tree is the one who talked about players getting sat who do not get it done re( Heaps/Nelson). That one is coming back on him now. He is awful on passing downs.



Just saying, we have places we can point to, and we do have a comment from Bronco on this as well, where he admitted as much.

You're right, Hadley not Sorensen. Still, the dropoff between those two is big.
