We already knew that BYU loses to teams that win a lot of games - like most teams. And BYU beats teams that lose a lot of game - like most teams.

Very few teams either beat teams that win a lot of games or lose to teams that lose a lot of games.

Wait a minute....BYU is winless against teams that go undefeated???? :bug: ;)

Nice breakdown. The colors make it easy to digest in a glimpse, and I think it shows what BYU is--a better than average team that plays weak schedules.

At least we always the silver lining that beating up on cupcakes means we're not cupcakes

I'll take a big schedule every year with losses over the boring easy wins we've been stockpiling for decades. Yes, some fans may have a problem with that, but I want to see the big boys come to town. I still like the fact that we've played a couple big schools this year and it felt common place (even though it wasn't).

I love the idea of playing the big games. But how would our fan base handle losing more games every year?

Right now, we can't get ready for a big game or two each year. Playing more of those with the current preparation just means more losses.

We need to fix that first, and then look to fix our schedule.

I know. It's true we can't get up for the big games against rivals. We do much better against unfamiliar teams, however, which is what gives me some confidence. I don't care what other fans think; I just want to have something to look forward to each week. NMSU doesn't cut it. (Yes, I know scheduling will improve going forward. This is just my slight not in favor of a Big 12 type schedule.)

Now for BYU's relative ranks against such FBS competition from 2005-2010:

Against the elite which are teams .800 or better- 1-6. That's tied for 34th with Michigan and Oregon St. in terms of win pct. and tied for 26th with 24 other teams in terms of total wins.

Against teams that are good which are .600 to .799 teams- 12-9. That's 18th in win pct. in between Texas Tech and Arkansas BYU is tied for 24th in terms of wins with 7 other teams.

Against the meh which are .400 to .599 teams- 14-5. That's the 24th best winning percentage in between Louisville and Cal. In terms of wins BYU is tied for 44th with South Carolina, Tennessee, and Kansas St.

Against hot garbage which are .000 to .399 teams- 26-1. That's 19th in win pct in between Utah and Boise St. That's tied for 6th in wins with Hawaii and behind Nevada 27, Tulsa 27, Navy 28, TCU 28, and Utah 29.

My bottom line is that BYU is pretty average against the elite, but above average against virtually all other competition. That's not a bad place to be. And yes, BYU does play alot of hot garbage. Only 7 other teams have played more games against bad teams since 2005 than BYU has. Boise State has even played less games against bad teams.

34th against the elite is better than "pretty average" in my mind. That's top 1/3 of the FBS.

I was looking at it from a total wins perspective. The fact that 50+ teams can manage at least 1 victory against great competition since 2005 doesn't really distinguish BYU's accomplishment despite the superior winning pct.
