CougarbibIf I were KIng. RIley is still Prince. Had to beat TCU to be crowned King. I would be doing two things once I got to 5th on my priority list this weekend and started thinking about BYU Football.
First: Get ready for the Armed Forces Bowl Vs a very good - possible Near BCS Buster quality opponent from Conf USA - Houston or SMU. Those who claim we can't tell if Riley learned anything until next season are either short-sighted or smoking BS.
Second: Get ready for next season.
The schedule for the next four weeks paves the way to do just that.
Week 1: BYE - use practice to prepare RIley to put Idaho away early in the first half. GIve Jake and Lark back-up reps and get both ready to play.
Week 2: Continue what was started in Week 1. Also get back-up offensive linemen and safeties prepared to play vs Idaho as well. Beat Idaho soundly. Do not let off the throttle. Bring Heaps in for the last drive of the first half and the first drive or two of the second half to keep him from getting rusty. He may be needed if RIley gets injured or depending on match-ups in the Hawaii and Bowl game. Barring injury to Riley, probably not needed, but needs to be ready to go until Lark is evaluated in game situations. Lark finishes 2rd and 4th quarters. Back-ups are played frequently throughout the game at OL,RB, and Safety. Continue to develop Falslev and Alisa.
Week 3: Just like week 2 except prep Riley to put away NM State early in the first half. Finish the game the same way as the previous week Vs Idaho.
Week 4: Same but prep to put away Hawaii. BTW, in all three games, that means game-plan for and exploit specific weaknesses and mismatches vs these specfic opponents. I don't know if we can put Hawaii away early at their place. If we cannot - stick with Riley until we do - perhaps the entire game. Use other back-ups more sparingly - early - based on what they have shown in the previous two games. If we pull away - finish the same way as the previous two games. I worry about Riley getting injured in this game. UH will bring the wood. But then, so did TCU.
Then game-plan specifically for our Bowl Opponent with improved depth in case we need it, and some much needed development of players where we will have key losses of experience going into 2012.
If I were KIng.
Then settle the starting QB strategy for 2012 in Spring - early - having seen plenty of Heaps, Nelson, and Lark in game situations to know what we have. Settle the Back-up QB strategy, including red-shirt decisions, if any - in Fall camp.
