Spudman87Just to make my position known, I will say that Riley is doing more than Jake would be right now, and is having more success because of the added dimension of running. An interesting question to me, though, is this: Do you want a quarterback who throws it so only his receivers can get it if anyone can, or do you want a quarterback who, more often than not, wont hit a receiver in stride but makes him fight a defender for it? This is only for the long ball, so I am not counting the short to mid range throws, because I think most of Jake's and Riley's interceptions come there.
To be honest, I don't know which option I choose. One benefit of Jake is that on the long ball, for the most part, if our receiver doesn't get it, no one will. With Riley, most of his throws that are more than 35 yards are all jump balls. I am grateful that we have tall enough receivers to give us an edge there, but still.
Riley's long ball gives us a better chance than Jake's, I would say because of Jake's overthrowing the receivers by so far sometimes, but it gives the other team a lot better chance to get it as well.
I think that this could be one of the reasons for the drop off in McKay's production. The games he has been most successful is when he gets the ball out in front of him and has to out run the defender. He isn't big enough to go up and fight for every ball.
I know that the situation I brought up isn't realistic, because so much more goes into being a quarterback than the long ball, but I just think it is an interesting question. Which would you choose?
Neither situation is great or desirable, but if you had this situation, which would you choose? An under throw and possible interception or incomplete, or an overthrow and no chance for an interception, but a high chance of an incomplete? I know I used their names already, but lets use this as a hypothetical situation, not a comparison between our current quarterbacks.
