Riley and trusting

At USU if Riley did not make the play, the team was doomed. Sometimes I think Riley falls into that mindset here. If Riley were to trust his teammates a little bit more--by throwing it away or eating it--and trust that they can collectively get it back the next play, I think he'd all be happily surprised and some of those last gasp efforts would not turn out so badly. Riley does NOT have to do it all on this team....He needs to quit acting like he does.

All the trust he has built up will quickly go away if he keeps making stupid errors. Also, it seems that Riley has a strange way of making it all about Riley. Oh, and because it's not worth starting another thread for, his high 5 with the ref was one of the most embarrassing things I have seen as a fan.

Dude, did you even read the original post? BoiseBYU was talking about Riley trusting his teammates, not vice versa.

Well - the first three times he trusted his punter - would you call that a pleasant surprise?

I am not saying he couldn't be a little more patient, but if he does not push to make plays you lose the ones that work - not just the ones that did not. Riley and JJ and Hoff and Falslev and Apo were pretty much the entire BYU offense Friday. Protection was poor.

Opening kick-off - Big TCU return - stupid penalty - wide open receiver on Tree not picking up the crossing route and then falling when he tried to catch up to it - and bango

TCU 7-0 just like that before RIley even gets to strap on his helmet. TCU getting the speed mismatch on Tree was better defensive coaching. They prepared for the specific opponent and got mismatches. Ditto twice on the wildcat waltzing into the end zone. Scheme problem. Coachinng. Didn't prepare for the specific opponent. TCU did. TCU outcoached BYU again. They were ready. We were not. We adjusted after seeing their surprises. Too late. This is why Bronco starts out slow. In a way - laziness due to arrogance and idealistic view about preparation to just get better vs to specifically game-plan for an opponent and create mis-matches.

I don't recall precisely RIley's first drive. Running game was going nowhere, except Riley. Didn't force anything - trusted his punter even down 7-0 and the D looking hopeless and helpless and even Alissa impotent to run on TCU - and - bango - 14-0 before you can say BOO. TCU is very good. Alissa cannot run over and through their tacklers. Can't out run them either. Needs a hole.

And then - yes - RIley tried to carry the team on his back instead of panicking or quitting. IMHO, he did force too much, although in post-game, Bronco indicated that he did not view those throws as mistakes.

Replay shows the Int in the endzone benefitted from a push on the intended receiver that did not get called and a great catch. The other int - one handed finger-tip grab.

That is the difference in this game vs USU - refs did not help, including the phantom penalty on Uale, head hits on BYU not called, and TCU getting away with grabbing and pushing receivers as one factor, but more importantly - their defense is way better and they have athletes than can snag finger-tip ints and grab an int with presence of mind to keep feet in bounds on the other int.

TCU D > Utah D > Texas D > BYU D. BYU D is good. Many other teams have great defenses.

BYU O matched TCU O and had we been given field position by our ST and D like TCU was given - We would have rolled.

BYU ST - were mediocre mostly and sucked when punting. Falslev and Hoffman excluded.

Some good points from both sides, but I have to agree that Riley is trying to do too much. A couple of redzone sacks are bad, but nowhere near as bad as giving the ball away. I actually wasn't frustrated with the USUesque play where the receiver still got a hand on it even though he was interfered with, but the lateral, oh that lateral -- Sometimes you just gotta eat the ball and trust that your offense, who has been moving the ball all game long, will be able to make it up on the next couple plays.

Best post I have seen on Riley yet. Needs to learn that a throw away is ok, and that a punt is not a sin.

Also true that is he continues to have bad turnovers, it could trust issues the opposite way though. Since no big games left, do not see it being an issue this year though.

4 of those punts were sinful.

PS: were you at the game? I saw a big guy in a BYU Law sweatshirt on one of the crowd shots - thought - must be Lawboy

Our o line sucks and aside from Riley we have no legit playmakers on the field. We've seen some good grabs and good kick return runs (a bright spot) but when was the last we saw a receiver make tacklers miss a put together a good run. We've got no speed on this team. No creativity. Our guys can barely get open and our o line can barely give Riley 3 seconds. The game is on Riley's shoulders.

Ahem. Hoffman kickoff return for TD. Falslev punt return for a TD. Or are you just being obtuse?

Ahem...reread my post.

I point out the good kick returns and call them a bright spot. Fact of the matter is aside from those returns (they did get good blocking) and some timely grabs we haven't had big plays by our receivers. They don't routinely break tackles or burn defenders.

I do not agree. We have some playmakers. They can make plays.

I'd say we have playmakers in training.

Hoffman will be stud and if Riley could get a pass to him in stride I'd like to see what he could do.

Apo, I think has the most potential for YAC. I'd like to see more passes to him in flats and let him run like he got against OSU.

Falslev has some great potential too and I like watching him try to make moves. He's aggressive and is another bright spot.

My point, and perhaps I wasn't clear on it (my bad), is Riley is our most consistent play maker at this point.

Okay, I reread your post and you basically say that we have no playmakers except the playmakers that make plays.

I stand by my obtuse statement.

I've been thinking about his risk taking in that game and I wonder if it would have been the same if BYU's special teams hadn't put us in the hole early and BYU wasn't playing from behind all game. It seems like he felt like he needed to take some risks in order to try to get us back in the game.

We have been better than every team we have lost to this year. On friday had riley not been stupid and thrown the ball while he was being sacked you can probably add 14 points to our score and we win. on the other hand even with his boneheaded mistakes we still would have won had our special teams not been beyond horrible. Take away stephenson's disaster and you take away probably 21 or so of their points and we still win even with riley's turnovers.

i still cant believe we lost that game. yet again we are the better team but lose. very frustrating. our d was getting stops and our offense was moving the ball yet we still find a way to lose. story of this whole year.

this season has been a huge disappointment in so many ways.

I was watching highlights of the 2006 team the other day. the 2006 team also lost 2 games where we were the best team on the field but just ended up losing. I don't think this team has found its "mojo" yet. It probably won't happen this year. I hope it does next and we see something special. The good news is, we are very young still.

Don't agree. The better team doesn't flub punts 3 times in one game or snaps, etc. If such errors were a one game occurence then I might agree we were the better team, but we've made mistakes across the whole season.
