Settling an argument

One of my friends always complains about Corby Eason being terrible and I always tell him that not every mistake on defense is his fault. I'm just wondering who you guys think is the weak link in our D, specifically the secondary since I don't think we could list any of the front 7 as a weakness

I think our safeties are out of position and more of a problem then Eason or any of the other corners that play. Uale might be the worst player on the field most of the time.

All of our d-backs play off the ball. This forces the front 7 to give qbs time, and we get picked apart vs. better, faster teams. :munch:

If they would trust the front 7 more to blitz and pressure and play bump-and-run, runs will work less, sacks will be more common, the other qbs will throw it away more. :)

The only bad part is the deep ball. Still, the positives for our defense will outbalance the positives by other offenses. :sulk:

Safties. They suck.

And I think it's so funny how they'll do nothing for a half dozen plays then finally make a hit and stomp around flexing their muscles as if they're the king of the field.

Safeties for sure. They are big hitters, but often out of position and take bad angles. Surprisingly, though, Uale has several interceptions so far this year and a lot of pass breakups (plus a lot of big hits - but he never wraps up either)

Eason is a good cornerback. He is a great tackler, and is almost always there to knock a ball down. I wish that Eason had the body type to play safety. He is a picture perfect tackler and is pretty football smart.

He is good. He has no help from the safeties, and for how good the front 7 is on the rush, anyone not named Jordan Pendleton (or to a much lesser extent Frazier) can't get consistent pressure on the quarterback, even against mediocre teams.

He's got more INTs and happens to be one of Bronco's favorite players.

The "one of Bronco's favorite players" line is really getting old with me. It's like "Jerry Sloan" type of player. All it says to me is lack of investment in potentially more talented players.

Pass coverage is a shared problem, the Safties are not great, Eason has his lapses, but mostly I get pissed when I see Ogltree covering the slot receiver. Ogle tree is a great run stopper but should never ever be put in pass coverage. We saw what happened to allow TCUs first TD of the game. That is a mismatch every time.

One of Eason's biggest "problems" is he thinks he has over the top safety help when he really doesn't.

Exactly. Like the play he misread trying to make the INT. (which is play that people go back to as a play he gave up).

That was bad play, but you don't even take that first step if you don't think the safety has your back (Uale was on the other side of the field. Covering roughly the same area as Sorenson.)

He has been a lot more careful, batting down balls, and just making stops, and not the big plays.

I do wish he would come up with a couple of those gimme INT's. But none of those - two if i remember right - were game changers.

Yeah, we've missed quite a few opportunities on defense to make huge game changing plays (missed INT, forced fumble but no recovery, etc.)

Yeah - probably - except his three picks, bone jarring tackles including one that saved a sure TD and prevented a loss, and the player of the week awards blinded me - made it hard to see.

Having said that, he gets juked in open field and misses too many tackles at times.

Speaking of the front 7 - ask yourself why so many large speedy backs are getting into the secondary for the safeties to tackle.

That wide open gift TD was on Ogletree. He is front 7. That bone-headed penalty to give up the field position that lead the above td play - was Ogletree - front 7. TCU 7 BYU 0. Courtesy of Ogletree. He was a mismatch and TCU took advantage of it. BYU coaching was not prepared for TCU there and subsequently twice when the W Cat QB waltzed into the end zone due to a scheme issue. Twice. That was front 7. Front 7 and coaching of front 7 - gave up 21 points.

Worst player on the field Friday had to be on the punt team and whomever was decidng when to run fake field goals or when to rush out the fg unit. Coaching.

SInce it is the job of the safety to clean up all of the garbage missed by others - yes our safeties sucked. BTW - Sorensen was the worst safety on the field Friday and usually is.

Who? If you are going to whine about it - put up or shut up?

I think Eason is just fine. He had an impressive behind the lines tackle on a swing pass on Friday. Very logan-esque. And he's pretty good in pass coverage. The biggest problem that Eason and the other db's have is lack of pressure on opposing qb's. They have to cover for too long.

Eason is playing good football. You can't really ask for much more out of a CB.

Ogltree is not a pass=coverage LBer. Plain and simple. In his defense, however, that first TD against TCU was Ogletree's man, but Tree slipped. So it wasn't a blown coverage or mis-communication. We seemed to have several slips throughout the night.

Most blown coverages this year seem to be safeties and LBers. Almost all to my recollection have been zone blitz coverages where it's obvious someone (like a LBers) thought someone else (like a safety) had that zone.

Ogletree missed it for a second and then slipped when he tried to get after it. Mismatch - I agree. Bronco and Ogletree were not expecting it and TCU called it based on BYU tendencies. But we don't prepare for specific opponents, so we apparently did not anticipate this even with the speedy receiver on the field. Coaching and game prep. Maybe Tree was still distracted by his boneheaded penalty on the previous play.

Yeah, 2 blown assignments for TD's definitely puts him ahead of Sorenson for the night....

I know you know his family, but it is ludicrous to say that he outplays Sorenson on a nightly basis. I can't think of one week past week 2 or 3 that he has outplayed him.

Sorenson is a sophomore learning a new position, he is expected to mess up, Uale is a senior who supposedly knows the assignments perfectly, he isn't allowed to blow numerous coverages a game.

Which TDs are you so willing to blame on Uale. Hopefully not the one where Ogletree missed the assignment on the crossing pattern. Hopefully not the two that the Wildcat QB waltzed into the endzone that was a scheme problem noted by the announcers and by Bronco himnself. So, I guess you must be blaming him for both ogf the other ones.

Describe them both in detail and how you conclude it was Uale who blew the assignment. I assume you know what his assignment is on every play.
