...BYU's Ron McBride. He raised the program from the dead, has them playing well at times, disappointing at times, but never consistent enough to really push the team to the next level.

I'm sick of watching BYU line up against good teams, but teams that are very beatable...and then shoot themselves in the foot again and again and again...and lose.

Tonights game was pathetic.

Bronco Mendenhall is the best coach BYU has ever had. He has the best winning percentage, the best bowl record, the best attitude and the best recruiting history. I love LaVell, I loved watching him coach, I loved watching his teams. Bronco is a better coach and it's not even close.

So Riley's TERRIBLE decisions and other Riley's botched punts are Bronco's fault? Ok...

Huge fail. Ron mcbride never led utah to a conference championship. the thing that was so maddening for ute fans with ron mcbride is his teams would come out and whip good teams and then would lose to crap teams. BYU is just the opposite. I think the main problem with BYU right now is they are having a hard time believing how good they are so they expect to make mistakes when it comes to playing good teams.

I listened to the coaches show last night and I have never heard Bronco sound so upset. How are you supposed to anticipate and fix (before it happens mind you) three blown punts when you haven't had your punt team make these mistakes even 1 time in the last 6 years. Riley S had had some bad punts that didn't go very far but he never had dropped 2 snaps in his career let alone 2 in a game. It just didn't make any sense. I am not sure why Bronco's teams play so cleanly against poor competition and have so many unforced errors against good teams but this year that has been the case. Calling Bronco Ron McBride is a stupid assertion at best.

Uh...YES! These mistakes were ridiculous, and the result of a team that was unprepared and under coached. And that is a reflection of coaching. I didn't see tcu making these stupid mistakes. I don't remember them shooting themselves in the foot a single time.

The REAL turnover margin was 6-0. That tells you one team was prepared, the other wasn't. This is a common theme from byu. And this is more evidence that gary Patterson is a much better coach than bronco.

So, under-coaching is what causes shanked punts? That's news to me. Riley doing something that he's been coached not to do since he started playing QB is somehow his college coaches' fault? Again, news to me. We outplayed TCU, we had the right plays called, the scheme was good, two poor decisions by an individual player and three bad punts are what cost us this game -- not coaching.

You might be right about bronco being the best coach we have ever had (I wouldn't put him ahead of lavell, but it's close). But guess what? Ron mcbride was the best coach that Utah had ever had...to that point. But he wasn't sufficient to take the team to the next level. His teams routinely underperformed. He wasted good talent. His teams made stupid mistakes even late in the season that cost them games that they should have won.

One big difference between bronco and mcbride is that football was at LEAST third on mcbrides priority list - right behind binge drinking and doing funny radio interviews.

The team was unprepared, plain and simple. It is evident in the constant rate of HUGE mistakes. It is evident in the 6-0 turnover margin. And bronco was canceling practices in fall camp because the team was "so ready". Bronco preaches "execution" again and again...and his teams fail to execute again and again against quality opponents.

Byu making ridiculous mistakes in big games isn't a new thing. It is constant, and is now expected.

Wow Riley Nelson getting alot of passes from many of you. Instead you want to throw Bronco under the bus? Good one. Goes to show just how much some of you are in love with Riley.

Yes, hes the reason we even had a chance. Yes he deserves alot of credit. But boy there sure is an absence of blame similar to past. Except for you Schmoe, credit to you.

Riley the punter deserves the lions share of the blame. Feel for the guy. But did he really try to kick the ball out of bounds after being a punter for how many years? Dude looked like a sissy and a baffoon. Maybe he was on a brain stupifying pain-killer.

But Bronco is "mystified', so leave him alone. ;-)

I've already said Riley's PER was unacceptable - which was my main criticism of Jake. I haven't put up my weekly RER and other statistical observations - some of which will criticize Riley.

I'm not in love with Riley. I do think he is the best option right now.

But was anyone really surprised by how this game unfolded? We have seen it time and time again under bronco. Spotting good teams double digit leads early in games. Basically handing them 2 touchdowns. This game was actually over 5 minutes in. A bronco team has never come back to win once down 2 td's.

I get that it was because players on the field made mistakes. But guess what - this game is not an isolated incident. We have seen this many times. And whether you like that or not, that is a reflection on coaching.

Let's see... Hate Bronco, Hate Riley Stephenson, Hate Jake Heaps, Now hate Riley Nelson, Hate the Offensive Line, Hate the Defensive Backfield (especially Eason), Hate Jacobsen, Love KVN for the late hit on the ISU punter during a kick, Hate the Oregon State player that hit Pendleton during an on-side kick attempt, Hate Falsev for fumbling the kickoff against the Utes, Love Falsev for a punt return TD vs TCU, Hate Doman for being on the field instead of in the coaches box high above the stadium, Hate an inexperienced OC Doman for not knowing how to call plays, Hate Vai Sikahema for stating that Heaps should transfer to the Utes, Hate Heaps some more for not wanting to redshirt or run the practice squad, Hate Gordon Monson....

Okay, so giving Jake Heaps more reps in the fall was somehow going to not make Riley throw late over the middle (something he's been coached not to do since day 1 as a QB) and it was going to make the punter not shank punts? Because that's what lost us the game. If you can't see that, you're blind.

Y 4 Ever has a point. You may not agree with the degree he goes, but he definitely points out a disturbing trend of spotting good teams a 10+ point lead before BYU kicks it in gear.

There were several coaching failures--such as that long field goal kick at the end of the half. Doman has to decide before the play clock is almost out that it is field goal time before trotting the kicker out there. Sorensen didn't even have a chance to set up. Epic Fail.

Also, that Matt Marshall throw was atrocious. Let's take out Riley Nelson on a 4th and 3 and bring in a wild cat to throw a deep ball to the other side--not on fourth down.

Both of those were Doman failures.

Clock management has been terrible for some time at BYU--clearly on the head coach. It doesn't rear its ugly head except in close games when we are behind.

All that being said Bronco is still a very good head coach. I don't think he is elite, but he is a great fit for the program. Someday, someone else will come along, and we'll probably be saying, "I wish we had Bronco back."

Riley kept us in the game, but made a lot of huge mistakes. Live to fight another day. I don't mind scrambling and throwing the ball in traffic to take a shot--just not while you are being tackled. That's just wreckless and cost us last night.

Not that it made the ultimate difference, but the Refs blew a call at a critical time when our defense just stopped the offense on 3rd and long. That changed the momentum when we were getting back into it. I didn't realize football was a non-contact sport. TCU had been headhunting all game.

Anyway, last night just confirmed what I already knew. BYU beats who they are supposed to beat, and loses to those they are supposed to lose to, and that's just life as a BYU fan.

Luckily, we get to stew over this for two weeks during a bye week.

P.S. the O-line are a bunch of marshmellows.

P.P.S. Looks like independence is a better fit for our program.

Back to the OP, Bronco is a good coach. But when he goes up against better coaches, it is very evident how much better they are.

There are small mistakes from every coach every game. After any game, win or lose, you can break it down play by play and second guess what coaches did (if it works, they're brilliant, if it doesn't, they're the goat). The point is, we were in the game to win it because of the big scheme that the coaches put together, but the EXECUTION (I know you all hate that word) wasn't there from certain players when it mattered. They knew what to do, they had been coached what to do, the had practiced what to do, but the left their brains and focus on the sideline during those plays. The turnovers and shanked punts were NOT a result of coaching, they were a result of poor play from individuals, and they're what cost us the game.
C
Cougarfan87
Who is it that coaches players and get them up for a game? We always start out tight against good teams. Whose job is it to keep the players loose so they can execute appropriately?

That is where elite coaching comes in--and where we lack.
