stuckinbig10countryThe fundamental problems with BYU's football team right now are lack of talent and lack of discipline and accountability. The only place that you can lay this blame is on the coaching staff.
I don't know why we are so much less talented than some of the teams we play against, especially Utah and TCU, when almost every year we get higher ranked recruiting classes. We land these great recruits, yet we continue to trot out walk-ons turned scholarship players (Uale, I'm looking at you), when we have these much better athletes that are standing on the sidelines. This is only going to get worse with the continued bone-headed comments made by our head coach that will alienate the better athletes (entitled athletes/parents, etc). I know the whole bash on entitled athletes sounds great, but the type of players we need to get to the next level are going to have some sense of entitlement in most cases.
The team is so undisciplined, and there is zero accountability for poor play on the field. Uale continues to be out of position, miss tackles, has terrible penalties, yet he continues to play roughly 95% of the game. This means one of two things: 1-he is our best option at that position, and the backup is such a big drop off that it would kill us to have him (Uale) off the field, which is scary or 2-people who are better aren't playing for non-football reasons, which is even worse. He's just one example, but there are others (especially on the O Line).
Players do not progress when they come to BYU. They stay the same or they regress, but the first day you see the field is as good as you're going to be, unless you are completely self motivated (ie, John Beck). Jake Heaps sucked at the beginning of last year, made huge strides against poor competition last year (although, I'm not sure some of those teams were any worse than many on our schedule to this point), played like a warrior against Utah last year (dislocated ribs during the game), and should have won that game if it wasn't for the coaching errors and mental mistakes by the team. This year, he can't do anything right and appears scared to get hit. So, how did he go from warrior with dislocated rib almost winning the biggest game of the year, to pansy in less than a year? Obviously coaching.
I don't know if anyone has to go, but there does need to be a fundamental shift in the culture of this team. It is something that starts at the top and filters down.
