Not Riley Nelson, Riley Stevenson. His 3 blown punts cost us 21 points. 38 -21 = 17. BYU takes care of business in the punt game we win 28 - 17. So our 2 biggest rivals this year we give up our most overall points 54 to utah on 7 turnovers and 38 to TCU on turnovers.

Yep, the coach called all three of those blown punts.

The punting game was bad but kind of hard to pin it on that one phase of the game. As a matter of fact the first botched punt was because the upback stepped in the way of the snap. The shanked punt was bad as was the snap he dropped. Riley Nelson's inability to value possesions and finishing in the red zone were killers. He didn't protect the ball at all. Sorensen even had some critical missed tackles on D. Lots of blame to go around, players, coaches, everyone.

Take the week off to get rested and correct mistakes. Last 3 games are all very winnable games.

I really thought we had a chance. If those punts weren't blown, and Nelson didn't throw those dumb interceptions - we are right there! Crap.

Good post. TCU was not invincible and BYU let them off the hook with sloppy all-around play. Not a good game. Defense had some big mental lapses as well.

They replayed the snap that supposodly hit the swinging gate and in slow mo, it didn't look like the ball changed direction at all. Stevenson stepped to the right and the ball had a left trajectory. You have 2 things to think about as a punter, catch the ball and drop kick. Stevenson dropped 2 snaps, and had a 20 yard punt, all 3 went for touchdowns. 21 points. That is what lost the game. Everthing else was something that BYU could have recovered from. 21 free points is the killer.

Even with those mistakes, BYU could have recovered. The bright side is BYU went up against a "good" TCU team and had to make ST errors, Offensive errors, defensive errors, QB errors, penalty errors for TCU to secure the game. Can't overcome all of those mistakes, but I was surprised that BYU still made a game of it in the 4th despite all the errors.

It looked to me that the ball hit the upback on the first snap. I agree Stevenson had a bad night. But for anyone that has ever played or coached you know and I know one guy doesnt win or lose the game.

If Sorensen makes some tackles maybe we prevent a few scores. If Ogletree doesn't get burned on the second play of the game. If we kick the FG vs. going for the fake in the first half. If we get lined up on the FG to end the first half. If Riley doesn't turn the ball over so much.

Plenty of blame to go around.

I am not blaming him specifically. I am talking about 21 free points that can be attributed to his mistakes. BYU almost overcame it. This is a good BYU team that probably gets a little too nervous when they go up against teams like utah and TCU. It is maddening how we can just give games away when it is so important to focus. 21 points off of punts. Absolutely ridiculous. I just don't understand how we can find new ways to lose these games.

Good point. Why does BYU freeze up so badly against utah and TCU specifically? Even when BYU is clearly as good or better they somehow bow down to these two teams?

They were critical mistakes to be sure. Let's take the week off to regroup and finish this regular season off right.

I'm as big a Bronco homer as you're going to find, but blaming your punter when your defense lets the Frogs score in 2 plays and 70 yards rubs me the wrong way.

He didn't lay blame on the punter. He was asked if the punts cost us the game and in a round about way he said that the punts cost us field position which in the end was the turning point in the game. He didn't call Stevenson a bum who cost us a win. He said in a politically correct way that the 3 blown punts cost us the game.

OK, that is a little more reasonable. Field position was the story of the game. It let TCU be in the driver seat all night.

I agree that there is plenty of blame to go around, and if only a couple of them change, we have a different outcome. The three punts were big, two trips to the blue zone with two turnovers on plays that shouldn't have happened were big. 2 touchdowns there, we win, 1 touchdown and 1 field goal, we tie and go into Overtime. The delay to get the field goal team on the field at the end of the first half. The 4th down "fake" or whatever that was. Isn't the point of a fake field goal to make the other team think that you are going for the field goal? 2 defensive pass plays with blown coverage. Take your pick.

Looking at how influential coaches are in college football, you could say that about any game. As I've watched BYU this year, I keep thinking "why does my team always get burned by boneheaded plays but rarely benefit from them?" Why can't the other team's punter drop snaps? Why can't the other team's secondary completely blow coverage twice in a game?

I won't say that coaching cost BYU this game, but I do think coaching contributed to it. I like Coach Mendenhall a lot, but I've come to accept the fact that he's just an average coach in terms of tactics and strategy. He's an excellent coach in terms of administration and motivation. In college football, that's enough to go .700 or so each year (like Air Force), but it's not enough to consistently beat the elite teams.
