Don't forget to join the CougarCorner group as we enjoy the Cougar Tipoff.

We'll be meeting for dinner at 5 Star BBQ at 5pm and then heading to the Marriott Center after. We will reconvene at Portal J (for Jimmer) to watch the scrimmage.

5 Star BBQ is located at 70 N. Geneva Rd. in Orem.

Can you guys who got to go give us who didn't a report? I read that Hartsock was the leading scorer (24) and rebounder. Davis did well especially in the second half. Zylstra (sp) did well. Harison scored ok but missed a dunk and 7 out of 10 shots. He wasn't the only one to miss dunks and the free throws were under 70%.

I've uploaded pictures from the event to the CougarCorner facebook site. I'll be posting all the CougarCorner event pictures there, so go there and like the page and enjoy the pictures:

My impressions:

Sloppy!

Brock Zylstra should have a lot of people eating crow. He looked pretty good.

Carlino impressed me and LadyHawk, but he's still pretty young and raw.

Free throw shooting was terrible.

We've got some pretty tall kids on the roster this year!

Davies looked super rusty, and a bit out of the game at times, he also got so frustrated on one play he almost kicked the ball off the court, you could visibly see him struggling with himself not to blow up.

Noah Hartsock and Charles Abouo were the only guys who played full effort the whole game I thought. Both looked good, but Abouo, as always, plays out of control and loses the ball as often as he does something good with it.

I really liked the way Hartsock fought for rebounds and played his game.

Go Cougars!

It was sloppy. Zylstra is pretty awesome. Davies looked a LOT better in the 2nd half. It looked to me like he's expanded his post arsenal a bit.

Carlino looked really good as a point guard in the sense that his ball handling and distribution were great. His shot seemed off for most the night, though.

I just finished watching the scrimmage.

IMO our best players are in order

1. Davies- looks rusty

2. Hartsock -same as last year

3. Abouo -looks more assertive going to the rim

4. Rodgers - looks more comfortable but basically the same as last year

5. Zylstra -as has been discussed- he is much improved

6. Harrison -shows flashes but tries to do too much

7. Collinsworth -still a very good rebounder- still doesn't have the lift/explosion to score around the hoop

8. Carlino - a better athlete than I knew- good ball skills- tries to do too much

9. Winder - has quick hands and quick feet to go along with a good frame- looks a like a good wing defender

10. Sharp - quick forward utility player. Hustles and finishes around the hoop.

A starting lineup of Zylstra, Abouo, Rodgers, Hartsock and Davies will be able to get it done defensively. Offensively they are going to look to the post to establish Davies. This should create open 3s for Rodgers, Zylstra and Hartsock.

Harrison should be the first guard off the bench. Collinsworth the first big off the bench.

Martineu just a emergency point guard.

Once Carlino is eligible I see him getting some minutes but he would need a huge improvement to become the starter.

Sharp and Winder will get minutes because they are good athletes who play hard on the boards and D.

Without injuries I don't think we will go deeper into our bench.

Thanks. This is informative. I sorry they looked sloppy. Will Zylstra be the Nelson of basketball?

The comparison is fair, but the jury is still out on both guys!

What it says to me is that both Bronco and Rose are far far far better at evaluating talent and potential for talent than anyone on an internet forum (including me). That is a good thing.

My biggest concerns with this team are how do we handle full court press?

And can we get the ball to Davies in crunch time? If not can a guard create something out of nothing?

Tipoff games are tough to judge much from. Players that were on opposite teams will be on the same side in real games. It's tough to see how those guys mesh when they're not together. Still fun though

First off...when did CougarCorner get a Facebook page. Just finished "liking" it.

Second, it will take this group of guys a bit to gel. They lost their entire back court and the facilitator of the offense. It's a new offense for them with Davies at the center. Davies needs to relax and do his thing and he'll be a beast.

It's a recent addition. Thanks for liking it.

As for your second point, I agree. I think we will really miss the Jimmer-Jax connection next year. It's hard to replace that kind of duo quickly.
